Computer Modules for Assessing Socio-Cultural Competence

Description:

MSU's Center for Language Education And Research (CLEAR) offers computer modules for those who are teaching or studying German or Russian and want a tool for assessing pragmatic knowledge in these languages. The modules present communicative functions such as asking for directions, asking permission, expressing preference, and giving compliments. They include photographs to help establish a context for the listening exchanges. Some possible uses for the modules include: part of a placement exam, a part of a comprehensive exit exam, a part of a course's instructional materials, or as a part of a pre-departure assessment tool for study abroad students.
