Anne Robertson, musicologist, University of Chicago, will present the lecture: Beads, Books, Coins, and Rituals: Josquin's Music and Material Culture of the Late Middle Ages. Private devotion and religious practice more generally are often closely associated with material culture in the fifteenth century. Examining several examples of late medieval music and the material culture that surrounded them, with special focus on Josquin des Prez’s famous Ave Maria.…virgo serena, we will witness ways in which objects and music complement and enhance one another in the late middle ages.
