  • Center for Highway Pavement Preservation

    Description:

    The mission of CHPP is aimed at providing a new platform for accelerating innovation in highway pavement preservation. The center will assist in meeting the increasing demand for highway pavement preservation research and will further the goal of increasing the reliability and performance of the nation’s highways.

    The establishment of the proposed Center will complement the efforts currently undertaken by the NCPP to conduct outreach and technology transfer, especially in transferring research and educational advances in highway pavement preservation to the broad transportation community. The Center will use the links established by the NCPP with a variety of state and local highway transportation agencies and private companies to accomplish its outreach mission. Contacts with the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) in Michigan (run by Michigan Technological University) and other LTAPs will be leveraged to reach local transportation agencies.

    Description:

    MSU's Center for Language Education And Research (CLEAR) in the College of Arts and Letters is one of 16 language resource centers in the United States. CLEAR's goal is to promote and support foreign language teaching and learning in the U.S. through second language research, materials development, and professional training workshops.

  • Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies

    Description:

    The Center facilitates learning about this core region of the Americas. It is the nexus between the university curriculum, functional pathways that bring together students from diverse colleges, and fruitful collaborations with other institutions in the US and in the region. The Center enriches formal instruction with experiential learning abroad, film and seminar series, visiting scholars, sponsored events, faculty and student research, and ready access to scholarly resources through campus repositories and loan programs.

  • Center for Microbial Ecology Image Analysis System (CMEIAS)

    Description:

    CMEIAS consists of several custom plug-ins for UTHSCSA ImageTool, a free image analysis software operating on a personal computer in a Windows NT or higher environment. The main objective of CMEIAS is to provide computing tools designed to strengthen microscopy-based approaches for understanding microbial ecology. CMEIAS software contains many measurement features, the most unique of which is an object classifier that automatically categorizes each cell in the image into one of 11 predominant microbial morphotypes, including cocci, spirals, curved rods, U-shaped rods, regular straight rods, unbranched filaments, ellipsoids, clubs, rods with extended prostheca, rudimentary branched rods, and branched filaments. This information is useful for studies on the ecology of microbial populations and communities.

  • Center for Physical Activity and Health

    Description:

    MSU's Departments of Kinesiology and Epidemiology have collaborated to form the Center for Physical Activity and Health (CPAH). By studying the effect of physical activity on human health and well-being throughout the lifespan, the CPAH will be able to impact the lives of Michigan and US citizens by offering appropriate physical activity intervention strategies. The CPAH will partner with many organizations including other academic units on and off campus, businesses, industries, philanthropic organizations, and governmental and public health organizations in order to understand and implement physical activity research, policies, and behavior as it relates to chronic disease prevention, a better quality of life, and overall health outcomes.

  • Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability

    Description:

    The mission of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability is to develop and maintain a center of excellence that integrates ecology with socioeconomics, demography, and other disciplines for ecological sustainability from local, national, to global scales. The objectives include: conducting cutting-edge research on emerging issues related to ecological sustainability; training new generations of leading scholars for interdisciplinary research; and disseminating research findings across the globe.

  • Clarksville Research Center (Clarksville, MI)

    Description:

    The Clarksville Research Center (CRC) hosts research on small fruits and tree fruits as well as potatoes, chestnuts and a variety of other crops. Research at the 440-acre site includes variety development, fruit thinning and growth regulators, dwarf rootstocks for fruit trees, integrated pest management, organic production systems and new pruning practices to help make production more profitable, efficient and environmentally friendly. CRC is a valuable site for inoculated potato late blight field trials because of its isolation from potato-growing areas.

  • Climate Land Interaction Project (CLIP) - East Africa Information Resources and Lesson Plans

    Description:

    The purpose of the Climate Land Interaction Project (CLIP) is to understand the nature and magnitude of the interactions of climate and land use/cover change across East Africa. Researchers are employing a variety of tools to understand these important linkages. These include the use of regional atmospheric models, crop production models, land use/cover change models, satellite remote sensing, role playing simulations and household survey information. Data from several case study areas, located along ecological gradients located on prominent volcanoes (e.g., Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya) are being used to build high resolution models that can be scaled up to the region. The CLIP Website also offers lesson plans geared toward 7th graders.

  • College Ambition Program (CAP)

    Description:

    Michigan State University researchers are working in partnership with two mid-Michigan high schools to develop an effective school-wide model for preparing students for careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) areas. The College Ambition Program (CAP) focuses on helping students gain interest and realistic expectations about the types of education and experiences needed to pursue technical occupations. 

    CAP is a research study funded by the National Science Foundation and the Michigan Department of Education designed to promote a college-going culture within high schools. The CAP program provides support and resources to students and high schools through a variety of different avenues:

    • Course Counseling and Advising
    • Tutoring and Mentoring
    • Financial Aid Planning
    • College Visits
  • Community Evaluation and Research Collaborative (CERC)

    Description:

    CERC acts as a hub for program evaluation activity across Michigan State University and provides training in evaluation and community-based participatory research, and conducts formative (planning) and summative (outcome) evaluations. Across local, state, and national arenas, CERC partners with nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, government, health organizations, foundations, and other universities. 

     

  • Community Music School (CMS) Detroit

    Description:

    Michigan State University's College of Music expanded its music education and music therapy offerings to children and youth in Detroit as part of a wider university effort to share faculty expertise and resources with the city's residents. CMS-Detroit programs are offered in response to the community's desire for enhanced music education and performance opportunities.

    The programs are built on the knowledge that exposure to music dramatically enhances learning, life skills, cognitive development, social awareness, and problem solving—all skills that are transferable and necessary in these changing economic times. 
     

  • Composite Materials and Structures Center

    Description:

    The Composite Materials and Structures Center has provided more than 70 companies with technical assistance through research, testing, and analysis. The Center is a multidisciplinary research facility that utilizes the expertise of MSU's engineering faculty, as well as faculty members from other colleges on campus to support the Center's three major efforts: research on composite materials, processing, and design; support of graduate and undergraduate education in the science and engineering of composites; and transfer of composites technology to industry through seminars, short courses, and cooperative research.

  • Confucius Institute Services for Educators and School Districts

    Description:

    The Confucius Institute at Michigan State University consults with and assists schools and other organizations to develop customized Chinese language and cultural learning programs. CI-MSU also helps schools and school districts recruit qualified Chinese teachers and provides instructional materials, on-going professional development, and on-site support.

  • Connected Mathematics Project and Curriculum

    Description:

    The Connected Mathematics Project (CMP) is a complete mathematics curriculum for middle school teachers and students. It helps students and teachers develop an understanding of important mathematical concepts, skills, procedures, and ways of thinking and reasoning, in number, geometry, measurement, algebra, probability and statistics. CMP is based on research, and was field-tested in diverse sites across the country with approximately 45,000 students and 390 teachers. A growing body of research and evaluation reports indicates that CMP outperforms non-CMP curricula on tests of problem-solving ability, equals or outperforms non-CMP curricula on skills tests, and promotes long term retention.

  • CREATE for STEM Institute

    Description:

    The goal of the CREATE for STEM (Collaborative Research in Educational Assessment and Teaching Environments for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Institute is to improve the teaching and learning in mathematics and science from kindergarten to higher education. It serves as a springboard and a hub for innovation, research, and intellectual collaboration, and help bring to fruition ideas and projects that will make a difference in the teaching and learning of science and mathematics for all learners regardless of their cultures or experiences.

  • D.A.R.E. Michigan Training Center

    Description:

    MSU's School of Criminal Justice heads up the D.A.R.E. Michigan Training Center, which serves as a resource for police officers to bring a clear, comprehensive, and consistent K-12 D.A.R.E. message to kids in Michigan's classrooms to enhance children's development of healthy positive behaviors. Goals of the Center include:

    • Communicating the D.A.R.E. message through elementary, junior high, and senior high curricula;
    • Establishing statewide awareness of the D.A.R.E. program and how it can assist the fight against drugs and violence in schools and communities;
    • Serving as an information resource for the accumulation, interpretation, and dissemination of the D.A.R.E message; and
    • Offering the best training and technical assistance to provide schools and communities with quality D.A.R.E. police officers.

    The Center is also involved in the evaluation of the New D.A.R.E Program curricula, which will be administered to middle school and high schools in six cities across the country.

  • Dairy Foods Complex/ Dairy Store

    Description:

    The Dairy Foods Complex facility enhances the ability of scientists to address the important issues in the dairy industry, such as food safety, diet and health, and new technologies. The faculty in the department serve as an important resource for the dairy processing industries in Michigan. During the last 15 to 20 years, the technology incorporated in dairy plant design and the detail in regulation has become increasingly complex. A modern processing plant aids in the training of industry and regulatory personnel for Michigan's dairy processing industries. The Dairy Food Complex also acts as an important educational tool for educators working on food and career units in schools and other groups. Tours and drop-in visits by the public result in over 10,000 visitors per year.

  • Demmer Shooting Sports Education and Training Center

    Description:

    This 24,000-square-foot, multipurpose facility supports NCAA shooting programs and team sports, the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP), and hunter safety and 4-H youth programs. It also houses MSU club shooting sports -- including small-bore, air rifle and archery -- and academic programs in shooting sports, law enforcement and related curricula. It accommodates DNR conservation officer and MSU police officer certification training.

  • Dunbar Forest Experiment Station (Sault Ste. Marie, MI)

    Description:

    The 5,760-acre Dunbar Forest is the largest and second-oldest MSU off-campus facility. The forest hosts long-term genetics and silvicultural studies that have helped advance the science of forest management in Michigan and the Great Lakes region. For example, red pine is the most widely planted commercial forest species in Michigan, occupying more than 850,000 acres. Successful long-term management of this important resource is based, in large part, on research results from the Dunbar Forest.

  • Economic Development Extension Resources

    Description:

    Michigan State University Extension is an educational leader in providing support to communities in green and sustainable economic development. Through programs like Stronger Economies Together, MSU Extension facilitates the development of an economic development plan in two regions in the state. Extension educators help counties work together in developing strong economic blueprints that strengthen relationships, build trust and capacity and strengthen "social capital."
