  • Food Packaging Basics Workshop (November 2017)

  • Fruit, Vegetable and Organic Horticulture Management Certificate Program

    Description:

    The Fruit, Vegetable, and Organic Horticulture Management program provides students an opportunity to gain the necessary skills for a successful career in the fruit and vegetable industries. The program combines classroom instruction and theory with practical experience gained through laboratories, campus horticultural facilities for teaching and research, and a professional internship.  The 48-credit East Lansing based program is 3- 4 semesters of classroom instruction and a semester off-campus in a professional internship. It couples academics with hands-on field practice and also offers study abroad opportunities.

    Students will benefit from a core set of classes in applied plant science, soil science, entomology, irrigation systems, pruning, career development, and plant pathology.  The core required courses lay the foundation for understanding the best practices in fruit and vegetable production.   Through a wide range of elective courses in agribusiness, agricultural technology, and horticulture students can then tailor their studies to individual preferences.  Examples of elective areas include agri-food systems, sales, agricultural finance, organic farming, greenhouses, plant propagation and much more in the management of plant production.

  • FSPCA Preventive Controls for Human Food- Blended Training Course (November 2017)

    Description:

    The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requires every processing facility falling under the regulation to have at least one "Preventive Controls Qualified Individual" to help develop and implement the required Food Safety Plan. **NEW** The Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance (FSPCA) Blended Training course was developed to provide individuals an alternative to the instructor-led 3-day program to complete the FSPCA Preventive Controls for Human Food course.  The Blended course consists of 2 parts. Part 1 is online and Part 2 is instructor-led. Both parts must be completed in order to obtain the certificate. Successfully completing this course is one way to meet the requirements for a “preventive controls qualified individual (PCQI).”

  • Golf Turfgrass Management Certificate Program

    Description:

    The certificate program in Turfgrass Management with a golf course emphasis directs toward preparing students for a rewarding career as a golf course superintendent or other career options in the golf industry.  This 18-month technical training program consists of two 15-week semesters and two 10-week semesters, totaling 54 credit hours of instruction.  Students will take coursework in soil and landscape science, turfgrass management, plant biology, turfgrass irrigation, pesticide and fertilizer application, turf design and construction, golf course design & construction, and landscape maintenance. Electives in communication, leadership, design, and safety are available based on the student’s background and interests. The program in Golf Turf Management provides students with a solid background in plant science along with the specific expertise and skills needed for a career in golf course supervision and management.

  • HACCP Certification Training (February 2018)

    Description:

    The HAACP process helps identify potential contamination points in order to prevent hazards in meat processing. The process incorporates science to ensure production methods and delivery of products to consumers are safe. In addition to learning HACCP basics, attendees will learn how to build a team, write a HACCP plan and how to incorporate it. This certificate training includes juice certification.

  • Horse Management Certificate Program

    Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, 48824. The MSU Horse Teaching and Research Center is located on 100 acres south of campus.

    Description:

    This certificate program is designed to allow students the opportunity to specialize in the area of horse management. The typical program model is three semesters of on-campus, academic based learning opportunities. One semester is an off-campus, placement training experience at a horse facility. Once enrolled, students will have the opportunity to tailor their area of interest toward management emphasis, reproduction, riding instruction, or training. Students will take coursework in horse farm management, feeding and nutrition, basic reproduction, horse behavior, horsemanship, exercise physiology, and horse election/judging. Basic coursework in mathematics, communications, and computers is required.  Electives will vary depending on a student’s background and interests, and might be selected from the following: horse training, preparation for instructing horsemanship, independent study in horse reproduction, draft horses, forage crops, or leadership.

    Description:

    This two-day course demonstrates the complex capabilities of the ArcGIS software. Through conceptual overview and hands-on applications, participants will learn how to perform powerful queries and map displays. Participants will become familiar with the ArcGIS graphical user interface (GUI) and explore methods for creating, editing, displaying, querying, and analyzing geographic and tabular data in this software. Course textbook is included in the fee.

    The spring ephemerals constitute some of the most eagerly awaited flowers of the year.  Join Beal Botanical Garden assistant curator Peter Carringon as we examine the beautiful earliest spring flowers that we have imported from all over the temperate world.  Some temporarily dominated the economies of Europe, but they all have interesting stories.

  • Livestock Industries Certificate Program

    Description:

    The Livestock Industries certificate program is a three semester program designed to give students a professional advantage in the livestock production career field of their choice. Students are exposed to a broad spectrum of applied course work and hands-on education at the university’s facilities and an extensive industry internship. Students engage with leading professors, researchers, and future professional colleagues in a manner that is directly applicable to a functioning livestock operation and also develop communication skills while bridging the gap between theory and practical best management practices. 

    Students are required to complete courses in reproduction, animal nutrition, anatomy and physiology, live animal and carcass evaluation, livestock management and farm business management. This program is unique in that allows students to pick elective courses as well so that they can further specialize their educational plan to meet their needs, making them more marketable once they enter the work force. These courses can include agricultural economics, crop and soil science, agricultural technology and animal science.

  • Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program

    Description:

    The Michigan Master Gardener Program is a horticulture education and volunteer leader training program offered by MSU Extension. It provides home gardening information to Michigan citizens through a network of trained volunteers. An interest in plants, a personal commitment to volunteerism, and an enthusiasm for sharing knowledge with others are the only prerequisites. Applicants attend classes in their county, learning basic horticultural principles and environmentally sound gardening practices. They then provide volunteer leadership and service to their community through a variety of gardening-related activities. The program objectives are to provide instruction in basic horticultural science to motivated active gardeners and to provide MSU Extension with trained volunteers who will provide timely, accurate information to the public in the rapidly expanding area of home horticulture.

  • Michigan Turfgrass Conference (January 2018)

    Description:

    The purpose of this conference is to present the latest findings in turfgrass management, fertility, soils, diseases, weeds, varieties, pesticides and other timely topics pertaining to the industry. The MTF and MSU are planning on delivering a very informative and rewarding education package offering CEU's from MDARD as well as the GCSAA. There will be three days of education to increase awareness, education, and interest in the Turfgrass Industry.

    Description:

    The MSU Diagnostic Services Lab assists a wide variety of people experiencing problems with plants and pests. There are many things that cause plant problems. This laboratory specializes in diagnosing problems caused by arthropods (insects, mites, ticks, etc.), pathogens (fungi, bacteria, viruses), and nematodes.

    Description:

    An optional, voluntary course for unenrolled tax return preparers who wish to increase their knowledge and competency through continuing education. This seminar offers 6 hours of instruction plus a 100 question test. Passing the test, getting additional education (10 hours federal tax and 2 hours ethics in 2017 for the 2018 filing season), and signing a form about Circular 230 allows the IRS to issue a certificate of completion for the Annual Filing Season Program.

    The course opens at 8:00 a.m. Instruction begins at 8:20 a.m. and lasts until 3:00 p.m. Lunch is not included. This will be followed by the test.
