  • Agricultural Industries Certificate Program

    Description:

    The Agricultural Industries Certificate program is a three-semester, 48-credit technical training program comprised of on-campus and placement training. Many Agricultural Industry certificate program graduates are working as key employees in feed, grain, and chemical firms as custom applicators and field scouts. A certificate is granted at the completion of the program requirements. An excellent scholarship program is available through the Michigan Agri Business Association.

  • Applied Plant Science Dual Enrollment Certificates and Associate Degree Program (Northwestern Michigan)

    Location:

    Two or three plant science courses are offered each Fall and Spring semester in Traverse City and are held in the evening at the NMC University Center. Some classes are offered by two-way interactive television system that connects you to MSU East Lansing campus faculty.  Other classes are taught on-site by MSU faculty and additional highly qualified and experienced individuals.

    Description:

    This combined program enables students to complete an Associate’s degree and certificate program, without leaving northern Michigan.  Students can choose from a MSU Institute of Agricultural Technology Applied Plant Science Certificate with a specialization in  Landscape Horticulture or in Commercial Horticulture Operations, along with a NMC, NCMC, KCC, or WSCC Associate’s degree in Applied Science (AAS) or Science and Arts (ASA).

    Each student receives one-on-one help selecting a program of study, which includes an “on-the-job” internship opportunity. Taking advantage of world-acclaimed expertise and close-to-home convenience, the program provides professionals in the industry a chance to sharpen technical skills, keep informed of the latest research and regulatory information, and improve management practices. Graduates will enjoy a wide range of career and employment choices.

  • Applied Plant Science Program (Muskegon, MI)

    Location:

    Two or three plant science courses are offered each Fall and Spring semester in Benton Harbor and are held in the evening at Lake Michigan College. Some classes are offered by two-way interactive television system that connects you to MSU East Lansing campus faculty. Class meets in a special distance learning classroom which has interactive TV technology, there you can see, hear and talk to your instructor. Your instructor is able to answer your questions and speak to you directly. Other classes are taught, on-site by MSU faculty and additional highly qualified and experienced individuals. You may also connect to campus resources by computer and the Internet from home, work, and local libraries.

     

    Description:

    The Applied Plant Science program includes course work taught by faculty members from Lake Michigan College and Michigan State University. The degree and certificate programs contain specialty and general education course requirements which may vary some depending on area of study and community college associate degree requirements. Certificate options are available either in Viticulture or in the Applied Plant Science Program, with options in Commercial Horticulture Operations, Landscape Horticulture or Commercial Turfgrass Operations.

    The Southwest Michigan Applied Plant Science program offers this same type of specialized curriculum as the campus programs. It differs from the on-campus programs in some significant ways. First, it combines MSU courses, with community college courses. Student may simultaneously earn both an MSU Certificate and a community college Associate degree. Second, it brings MSU courses to you without the need move to East Lansing.

  • Beef Cattle Management Certificate Program

    Description:

    The Beef Cattle Management Certificate Program is designed to allow individuals the opportunity to specialize in the area of beef cattle management in a one-year intensive program. The certificate provides students with knowledge and experience in the management of both cow/calf and feedlot enterprises. This one-year program is centered around hands-on clerkships at the MSU Beef Cattle Teaching Center and the MSU Beef Cattle Research Center. Students have the opportunity to become involved in some of Michigan’s most important events for beef cattle: the Michigan Beef Expo and the Michigan Cattlemen’s Bull Test.

  • Dairy Management Certificate Program

    Description:

    The Dairy Management Certificate Program has been developed to meet the specialized needs of the herd manager and commercial dairy farmer. This technical training program consists of two 15-week semesters and one 9-week semester on campus for a total of 48 credits. Programs of study are tailored to the individual's educational goals. Areas of study include dairy herd management, nutrition, artificial insemination, crops, and farm management. A certificate is granted at the completion of the program requirements.

  • Electrical Apprenticeship Online Program

    Description:

    The Online Electrical Apprenticeship program is a four year program registered with the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship and Training. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded a certificate of completion by Michigan State University.

    This program provides the Related Technical Instruction (RTI) required by the State of Michigan through the revisions of implementation Public Act 217 of 1954, Rule 338.88e. It gives the apprentice the necessary theoretical and technical knowledge needed to become a successful journey person. It also gives additional practice of job-related skills and knowledge. The USDOL standards require that a minimum of 144 hours per year of apprenticeship training is to be provided to each trainee.

  • Electrical Technology Apprenticeship Training Certificate Program

    Description:

    This training program covers commercial, farm, residential, and light industrial wiring. Students study the latest National Electrical Code, electrical fundamentals and solid state electronic applications in agriculture, housing, and industry. Advanced technical training is important for a successful career as an electrician in agriculture and industry. Training includes residential, commercial, farm and industrial wiring with an emphasis on control system design, motor operation and application, solid state electronics, personal computer operations, and lighting design. A certificate is granted upon completion of the program requirements.

  • Food Safety Online Certificate Program

    Description:

    Alternative to the degree program, the Online Master of Science in Food Safety program offers a Certificate in Food Safety for Lifelong Education students who successfully complete any four of the program's qualifying graduate courses.  Course Options for Lifelong Students:

    Note:  If a student later decides to apply to our graduate degree program and is accepted, MSU will allow transfer of up to 9 credits (with a grade of 3.0 or better in each course) earned through any combination of courses taken through lifelong education, graduate certification, or transfer from another institution.

  • Golf Turfgrass Management Certificate Program

    Description:

    This two-year certificate offers training in Turfgrass Management with a golf course emphasis directed toward preparing the student for a career as a golf course superintendent. This 18-month technical training program consists of two 15-week semesters and two 10-week semesters, for a total of 54 credits. A certificate is granted at the completion of the program requirements.

  • Horse Management Certificate Program

    Description:

    The certificate program in Horse Management emphasizes management and equine skills that prepare students for positions in Michigan’s growing horse industry. This technical training program consists of three 15-week, on-campus semesters and placement training of at least 15 weeks, for a total of 48 credits. This program offers the most current training available.

  • International Food Law Distance Education Certificate Program

    Description:

    MSU's International Food Law Distance Education Certificate Program is the winner of the ADEC Excellence Award in College and University Distance Education. The program offers nine courses through the Lifelong Education Program at Michigan State University. Courses offered include:

    • European Union Food Regulation
    • Latin American Food Regulation
    • Canadian Food Regulation
    • Asian Food Regulation
    • Codex Alimentarius: The Food Code

    The three-credit courses are taught completely over the Internet by an international network of experts in food regulation. No books are required. Transcript transmission is not required through the MSU Lifelong Education Program. Successful completion of four courses is required for the International Food Law Distance Education Certificate; however, students are welcome to take any number of courses desired.

  • International Short Course: Agricultural Biotechnology and Biosafety (July, August 2017)

    Description:

    Education and awareness on various aspects of agricultural biotechnology including environmental biosafety and food safety issues will help assist government agencies various stakeholders make informed decisions on genetically engineered crops and products. This program is designed to help participants better understand various issues surrounding the use and management of agricultural biotechnology globally.  The focus of this training program is on biotechnology research, policies and regulations, management, and public outreach components as well as biotechnology related trade issues.

  • International Short Course: Best Practices in Dairy Production (August 2017)

    Description:

    Among developing countries, there is steady increase in the demand for milk and milk products due to favorable changes in income levels and living standards. Because of the perishable nature of milk, this increased demand creates an opportunity for local production in smallholder operations, or expanding operations within local economies. In order to take maximum advantage of this opportunity, knowledgeable individuals are needed in both technology transfer and policy making positions. It is toward these individuals that this training program is aimed. Training addresses animal health and production, reproduction, milk processing, food safety regulations both locally and internationally, animal welfare issues, and environmental concerns. The aim is toward the transfer of technology that is applicable under the local conditions of the participants. Consideration is given to both very small family farms and expanding production operations within the agricultural framework of developing economies. Moreover, as a result of enhanced communication and transportation technologies, access to global markets for the dairy products is getting much easier. However, due to the ever-changing international and local laws and regulations, food safety issues, animal welfare issues and stricter import/export controls, it is becoming more difficult for developing economies to compete in this global market. This program also addresses issues and opportunities in international dairy marketing relevant to developing economies in taking advantage of those markets, when favorable conditions exist.

    This week-long International Short Course in Food Safety. The course focuses on food safety policy development, risk analysis, and program implementation.     Description:

    This program is designed to enhance knowledge and skills of scientists and research managers in various aspects of agricultural research management, technology transfer, and commercialization. The program will share best practices in research management and partnerships, technology transfer, and delivery systems. Interactions with local farmers as well as field visits to agricultural research stations and extension services will be a key component of this program to demonstrate research-extension-farmer linkages.

    Description:

    This two-day course demonstrates the complex capabilities of the ArcGIS software. Through conceptual overview and hands-on applications, participants will learn how to perform powerful queries and map displays. Participants will become familiar with the ArcGIS graphical user interface (GUI) and explore methods for creating, editing, displaying, querying, and analyzing geographic and tabular data in this software. Course textbook is included in the fee.

  • Landscape and Lawn Management Dual Enrollment Certificate and Associate Degree Program (Grand Rapids)

    Location:

    The program uses multiple course delivery methods. MSU offers two to three courses each fall and spring semester in the evening at locations in Grand Rapids. All classes are taught on-site by MSU faculty or highly qualified industry leaders. Other MSU courses will be taught via distance learning, an interactive television system that connects students and classmates to the best instructors possible.

    Description:

    The Landscape and Lawn Management Certificate combines horticulture courses with business courses and an industry related internship to fulfill the program. The combination of courses is delivered by the Institute of Agricultural Technology and Grand Rapids Community College which together fulfill the Certificate requirements. Students in the program are also able to earn an Associate’s Degree from GRCC by taking only a few more classes.

    This Certificate leads to employment in landscaping, turfgrass, and plant nursery industries. The required professional internship gives students direct applied experience in preparation of job placement or enhancing current skills.

    Description:

    The Landscape and Lawn Management Certificate program combines horticulture courses with business courses and an industry related internship to fulfill the program. The combination of courses are delivered by MSU's Institute of Agricultural Technology and Montcalm Community College in Sidney, Michigan, which together fulfill the Certificate requirements.

    This Certificate leads to employment in landscaping, turfgrass, and plant nursery industries. The required professional internship gives students direct applied experience in preparation of job placement or enhancing current skills.

  • Landscape and Nursery Management Certificate Program (East Lansing, MI)

    Description:

    The Landscape and Nursery Certificate Program offers specialized training in landscape and nursery that combines the theories and principles of classroom instruction with the practical experience gained through a professional internship within the industry. The curriculum combines the foundations of plant growth and development, the related sciences influencing plant growth such as soils, entomology and pathology, with the mechanical aspects of production systems and equipment operations. Graduates of this program use their knowledge of plant growth and development, plant identification, pruning, fertilization, integrated pest management, and problem solving to maximize the beauty of outdoor spaces. The program consists of two 15-week semesters and one 10-week semester and an internship experience, for a total of 48 credits. Upon completion, the student receives a certificate and is prepared for entry into nursery production, landscape design/construction, landscape maintenance and garden center operations.
