    Description:

    The overarching goal of CGCEO is to contribute to the understanding of the interrelations among human, land, and climate systems in an international context, as reflected in MSU’s Boldness by Design. Building on existing strength in interdisciplinary approaches to understand the social processes, land use and land cover patterns and processes, and environmental impacts and responses at regional to global scales, the Center addresses the following key science questions:

    How are social processes altering and impacting global environmental dynamics? How do these changes, in turn, respond to and affect land and human systems?

    The research activities at the Center attempt to identify, understand and model land surface processes; determine and quantify socioeconomic root causes of and responses to global change, and assess human/animal health and ecosystem services.

  • CoastWatch Reporting System Website

    Description:

    The Sea Grant CoastWatch Website provides the latest available information on Great Lakes surface water temperatures. Sea Grant CoastWatch captures National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration CoastWatch data from satellites that pass over the lakes four times daily, then presents the latest good images to viewers as isothermic maps. CoastWatch site visitors can select from five lakewide, 16 regional and 42 port maps of Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario.

    Description:

    Michigan State University Extension is an educational leader in providing support to communities in green and sustainable economic development. Through programs like Stronger Economies Together, MSU Extension facilitates the development of an economic development plan in two regions in the state. Extension educators help counties work together in developing strong economic blueprints that strengthen relationships, build trust and capacity and strengthen "social capital."

  • Emerald Ash Borer Online Insecticide Guide

    Description:

    "Insecticide Options for Protecting Ash Trees from Emerald Ash Borer" is an online guide that provides the most up-to-date information on insecticides that can be used to combat this pest, as well as what to consider before treating ash trees. The guide includes frequently asked questions, information on insecticide products available for EAB control and how to use them, and a summary of results from studies that tested the effectiveness of the various insecticides. The guide also presents key points to consider and recommendations for dealing with EAB.

  • Enviro-weather Website for Pest, Natural Resource, and Production Management

    Description:

    The Enviro-weather website is a production management tool designed to aid agriculture and the green industry in making management decisions. The user selects a weather station location from the map to view weather data, integrated pest management models, natural resource and production models, forecasts and related links for specific commodities.

  • Forest Biomass Innovation Center (Escanaba, MI)

    Description:

    The 1,745-acre MSU Forest Biomass Innovation Center in Escanaba is leading a number of initiatives to increase the sustainable use of wood in Michigan’s expanding bioeconomy. This wood will come from the surplus growing in the forests and from willow and poplar energy plantations on marginal farm land in the northern parts of the state. Work focuses on increasing yields, decreasing costs, reducing greenhouse gas and energy losses, retaining rural jobs, and improving supply chain efficiencies. Research at the center also focuses on forest genetics, silviculture and forested wetland management.

  • Invasive Species ID Training Modules

    Description:

    These online training modules aid in the education of citizen scientists about invasive species. The modules require Adobe Flash and are HTML5 compatible, making them viewable on mobile devices. Each module will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

  • Know Your Coastal Areas Website

    Description:

    This website provides web-mapping tools to help individuals and organizations make informed decisions with regards to Michigan's coastal areas. It provides access to spatial layers of township-specific information about ecologically sensitive coastal sites, using data organized around ecological impact, land use change, and urbanization. The site also provides a link to the Institute's Web site, Digital Watershed, a nationwide Web application tool for effective watershed management.

  • Michigan Natural Features Inventory

    Description:

    The Michigan Natural Features Inventory (MNFI) is a comprehensive, continuously updated source of data on Michigan's endangered, threatened, or special concern plant and animal species, natural communities, and other natural features. MNFI offers several resources, including: survey forms for recording observations on special plant and animal species; lists of endangered and threatened animals, special animals and plants, natural communities, and resources; abstracts; maps; publications, including quarterly and annual reports; and information on many types of permit applications.

  • Michigan's Water Withdrawal Assessment Tool

    Description:

    The Water Withdrawal Assessment Tool (WWAT) is designed to estimate the likely impact of a water withdrawal on nearby streams and rivers. Use of the WWAT is required of anyone proposing to make a new or increased large quantity withdrawal (over 70 gallons per minute) from the waters of the state, including all groundwater and surface water sources, prior to beginning the withdrawal.

    The Mid-Michigan Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is a sustainability toolkit designed for planners, developers, community leaders, and the general public concerning the planning of future development in the Tri-County Area and how it impacts our health.  Specifically, it uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) programs to help inform users why or why not a particular development should be built in a specific location.

  • Mid-Michigan Health Impact Assessment Toolkit

    Description:

    Health Impact Assessment is defined as a combination of procedures, methods, and tools by which a policy, program, or project may be judged as to its potential effects on the health of a population, and the distribution of those effects within the population. HIA identifies appropriate actions to manage those effects.  The HIA Toolkit helps support the HIA process by providing free access to environmental and health data to planners, decision makers, and the public; mapping and visualization applications; and assessment of impacts that will showcase how to integrate an assessment of public health impacts within a greater, dynamic movement towards sustainability in our region.

  • Midwest Invasive Species Information Network

    The Midwest Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN) is a regional effort to develop and provide an early detection and rapid response (EDRR) resource for invasive species.  The goal of this regional resource is to assist both experts and citizen scientists in the detection and identification of invasive species in support of the successful management of invasive species.

    Description:

    The MSU BioEconomy Network (MSU BEN) coordinates the increasingly diverse range of bioeconomy activities on campus, which span research, policy, economic analysis and education, as well as corporate and government collaborations and commercialization. The MSU BioEconomy Network reinforces MSU’s role in expanding the bioeconomy and underscores our commitment to partnerships with both the public and private sector. The BioEconomy Network can:

    • Provide a link to researchers from many different disciplines
    • Disseminate information to leverage new federal, foundation and corporate research and development opportunities
    • Support the preparation of large, multidisciplinary grant applications
    • Act as a point of contact to MSU's administration and other institutions
    • Support meetings and symposia

    Description:

    The goal of the MSU Center for Regional Food Systems is to engage the people of Michigan, the United States and the world in applied research, education and outreach to develop regionally integrated, sustainable food systems.  It strives to:

    • Educate new generations to lead regional food systems research and practice.

    Description:

    Networked Neighborhoods for Eco-Conservation Online (NECO) helps you to map and to share photos, experiences, and information about your rain barrels, rain gardens, or other water conservation practices. You can also connect with others in your geographic neighborhood who are doing similar things.

    NECO utilizes existing social networking websites such as: Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and others to help share information and connect individuals and businesses working toward a common goal of improving their local environment through the installations of green practices.
