  • Applied Plant Science Dual Enrollment Certificates and Associate Degree Program (Northwestern Michigan)

    Location:

    Two or three plant science courses are offered each Fall and Spring semester in Traverse City and are held in the evening at the NMC University Center. Some classes are offered by two-way interactive television system that connects you to MSU East Lansing campus faculty.  Other classes are taught on-site by MSU faculty and additional highly qualified and experienced individuals.

    Description:

    This combined program enables students to complete an Associate’s degree and certificate program, without leaving northern Michigan.  Students can choose from a MSU Institute of Agricultural Technology Applied Plant Science Certificate with a specialization in  Landscape Horticulture or in Commercial Horticulture Operations, along with a NMC, NCMC, KCC, or WSCC Associate’s degree in Applied Science (AAS) or Science and Arts (ASA).

    Each student receives one-on-one help selecting a program of study, which includes an “on-the-job” internship opportunity. Taking advantage of world-acclaimed expertise and close-to-home convenience, the program provides professionals in the industry a chance to sharpen technical skills, keep informed of the latest research and regulatory information, and improve management practices. Graduates will enjoy a wide range of career and employment choices.

  • Arthropod Research Collection (ARC)

    Description:

    The ARC collection contains adult and immature insects, spiders, ticks, mites, and other arthropods, as well as nematodes, primarily from Michigan and the Great Lakes region. The Collection also contains many specimens from other parts of the world. The Center provides a reference collection of authoritatively identified specimens for research and extension; loans specimens worldwide for research; conducts systematics, evolutionary, and biodiversity research; collaborates and assists in faculty and graduate student research; and maintains a repository of voucher specimens documenting research.

  • Berry Crop Entomology Information and Resources

    Description:

    The Isaacs Lab studies the biology and management of insects in berry crops. Members of the lab are currently working on pest phenology, pheromone mating disruption, pollination, biological control, and selective insecticide evaluations, all with insects found in berry crops. Their extension program provides growers with practical information to make decisions about insect management, to improve their productivity, profit, and environmental safety.

    Pollination is critical for production of most berry crops, and we are investigating the ecology and management of pollinators and their economic value. We are also exploring the interactions between landscape structure and beneficial insects, both natural enemies and pollinators, in Michigan farmland.

  • Bioeconomy Institute Speaker Series: Developing Wolbachia-Based Control Strategies to Block Dengue Virus Transmission in Mosquitoes (April 2017)

    Description:

    Dengue Fever, and associated dengue hemorrhagic fever, is emerging globally as the most important arboviral disease threatening human populations.  At the present time, no treatment or vaccine is available for dengue fever leaving vector control as the primary intervention tool. In nature, about 28 percent of mosquito species harbor Wolbachia bacteria, but the mosquitoes that are the primary transmitters of dengue have no Wolbachia in them. Wolbachia has been found to stop the dengue virus from replicating. If there is no virus in the mosquito, it can’t spread to people, so disease transmission can be blocked.

  • Midwest Invasive Species Information Network

    Description:

    The Midwest Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN) is a regional effort to develop and provide an early detection and rapid response (EDRR) resource for invasive species.  The goal of this regional resource is to assist both experts and citizen scientists in the detection and identification of invasive species in support of the successful management of invasive species.

  • MSU Apiculture Laboratory

    Description:

    The MSU Apiculture Laboratory combines basic and applied research that benefits the beekeeping industry in Michigan and the country. Basic research includes computational, behavioral, physiological, and biochemical analyses to understand the mechanisms of social organization of a bee colony. Current applied research focuses on the impact of parasites (such as Nosema apis, Varroa destructor) on physiology and foraging behavior of worker bees, and on devising better control strategies for these threats to Michigan's beekeeping industry.

    Description:

    The MSU Science Festival is an exploration of the science that touches our everyday lives. There are hands-on activities for the whole family, plus demonstrations, discussions, lectures, and tours on topics from astronomy to music to zoology.  MSU researchers and their students share the wonder of science in over 100 diverse offerings for young and old to engage, explore, and inspire.  Events are held at MSU in East Lansing, as well as in Detroit and around the state.

  • South Campus Field Research Facilities

    The station’s 2,739 acres of farmland and forest are located south of Mt. Hope Road on MSU’s south campus.

    Description:

    There are 18 research facilities located on the south campus of MSU that allow AgBioResearch scientists to perform research in the areas of animal science and production, plant production and protection, environment and natural resources management, and renewable energy. State-of-the-art facilities and 2,739 acres of farmland and forest allow scientists to perform research close to campus and allow growers to view a number of demonstration plots in one visit to the university.
