    Description:

    This curriculum includes a variety of hands-on lesson plans, including experiments for first grade through high school. Lessons are grouped by grade level within content areas. Materials can be used in a variety of formal and informal environments.

  • Abrams Planetarium

    Description:

    MSU's Abrams Planetarium serves as an astronomy and space science education resource center. The Planetarium offers a variety of shows to preschool through senior citizens and promotes skywatching with publications, press releases, and public observing sessions. The Planetarium houses an exhibit hall with a book and gift counter, a blacklight gallery of astronomical art, and a hemispherical domed sky theatre.

  • Abrams Planetarium Group Instructional Programs

    Description:

    MSU's Abrams Planetarium offers a variety of single-visit instructional programs dealing with astronomical topics for a variety of age groups. Programs on stars, constellations, planets, and the moon are available for preschool and elementary children. Higher level classes are offered on additional topics. Detailed descriptions are found on the website. Teachers who desire a more intensive experience should consider bringing their class for more than one presentation. Two or more programs can be scheduled as a multiple-visit series.

  • Abrams Planetarium Sky Calendar

    Description:

    MSU's Abrams Planetarium offers the Sky Calendar, which promotes skywatching for people of all ages. The sheet for each month takes the form of a calendar; diagrams in the boxes invite the reader to track the moon's rapid motion past the planets and bright stars of the zodiac, as well as to follow the more leisurely pace of the planets in their conjunctions with bright stars and other planets. The Sky Calendar has become the nation's most highly illustrated easy-to-follow guide to sky events. It is reproduced by classroom teachers for their students, by planetariums and astronomy clubs for their members, and by park interpreters for audiences at sky talks. A full-year subscription is available, starting any time.

  • Agricultural Operations Certificate Program (Monroe, MI)

    All courses are delivered in Monroe, Michigan, on the campus of Monroe County Community College.

    Description:

    The Agricultural Operations program provides students with a solid background in plant and soil science, precision agriculture, water management, entomology, plant pathology and business management. This partnership allows students to earn a certificate from the MSU Institute of Agricultural Technology (IAT) while working toward an associate degree from Monroe County Community College. Full-time students will be able to complete the associate degree and certificate in just two years and financial aid is available to help with tuition expenses at both schools.

    Description:

    Michigan State University (MSU) and Muskegon Community College (MCC) are working together to offer specialized training programs for careers in some of Michigan’s highest demand industries. Students benefit from dual enrollment at both institutions with most courses delivered in Muskegon, Michigan, the home of MCC.

    This partnership allows students to earn a certificate from the MSU Institute of Agricultural Technology (IAT) while working toward an associates degree from MCC. The partnership between the two institutions benefits those who seek employment in agriculture, landscaping, and the fruit and vegetable industry.

    The 55-credit Agricultural Operations program provides students with a solid background in plant and soil science, precision agriculture, water management, entomology, plant pathology and business management. It exposes students to exciting opportunities available in the industry.

  • Arthropod Research Collection (ARC)

    Description:

    The ARC collection contains adult and immature insects, spiders, ticks, mites, and other arthropods, as well as nematodes, primarily from Michigan and the Great Lakes region. The Collection also contains many specimens from other parts of the world. The Center provides a reference collection of authoritatively identified specimens for research and extension; loans specimens worldwide for research; conducts systematics, evolutionary, and biodiversity research; collaborates and assists in faculty and graduate student research; and maintains a repository of voucher specimens documenting research.

  • Berry Crop Entomology Information and Resources

    Description:

    The Isaacs Lab studies the biology and management of insects in berry crops. Members of the lab are currently working on pest phenology, pheromone mating disruption, pollination, biological control, and selective insecticide evaluations, all with insects found in berry crops. Their extension program provides growers with practical information to make decisions about insect management, to improve their productivity, profit, and environmental safety.

    Pollination is critical for production of most berry crops, and we are investigating the ecology and management of pollinators and their economic value. We are also exploring the interactions between landscape structure and beneficial insects, both natural enemies and pollinators, in Michigan farmland.

  • Bioeconomy Institute Speaker Series: Developing Wolbachia-Based Control Strategies to Block Dengue Virus Transmission in Mosquitoes (April 2017)

    Description:

    Dengue Fever, and associated dengue hemorrhagic fever, is emerging globally as the most important arboviral disease threatening human populations.  At the present time, no treatment or vaccine is available for dengue fever leaving vector control as the primary intervention tool. In nature, about 28 percent of mosquito species harbor Wolbachia bacteria, but the mosquitoes that are the primary transmitters of dengue have no Wolbachia in them. Wolbachia has been found to stop the dengue virus from replicating. If there is no virus in the mosquito, it can’t spread to people, so disease transmission can be blocked.

  • Catch a Cosmic Ray Tour and Classroom Lesson

    Description:

    For those classes of physics students who want to go beyond the tour, here's a chance to delve into the problem of cosmic rays with a hands-on experiment. After being treated to a faculty discussion of the state of cosmic ray research, students will form their own hypotheses on the nature of cosmic rays and test them with directional detectors. This program includes materials for the teacher to use in class before and after visiting NSCL, turning it into a three-day lesson. JINA offers grants to fund all or part of the travel costs for classes participating in this program. Due to equipment limitations, up to 30 students can participate at one time.

  • Center for Advancing Microbial Risk Assessment

    Description:

    The Center for Advancing Microbial Risk Assessment (CAMRA) provides the tools needed to combat bioterrorism and ward off global outbreaks of infectious diseases. Along with a consortium of scientists from six other universities, MSU's Joan Rose and other MSU scientists will use the center to help shape policy and create a global strategy for dealing with these microbial risks.

    Description:

    The bioethics brownbag lecture series was started by the Center in the mid 1990s. Over the years, the series has featured countless speakers from all over the United States and the rest of the world. Lecture topics frequently stem from bioethics history, current research, theory, law and health policy, and more.  You can join us in person or watch live online! Lectures are held on MSU’s campus in East Lansing from 12-1 pm EST. See individual event details for room locations. Feel free to bring your lunch!   • Center for Global Change and Earth Observations

    Description:

    The overarching goal of CGCEO is to contribute to the understanding of the interrelations among human, land, and climate systems in an international context, as reflected in MSU’s Boldness by Design. Building on existing strength in interdisciplinary approaches to understand the social processes, land use and land cover patterns and processes, and environmental impacts and responses at regional to global scales, the Center addresses the following key science questions:

    How are social processes altering and impacting global environmental dynamics? How do these changes, in turn, respond to and affect land and human systems?

    The research activities at the Center attempt to identify, understand and model land surface processes; determine and quantify socioeconomic root causes of and responses to global change, and assess human/animal health and ecosystem services.

  • Center for Microbial Ecology Image Analysis System (CMEIAS)

    Description:

    CMEIAS consists of several custom plug-ins for UTHSCSA ImageTool, a free image analysis software operating on a personal computer in a Windows NT or higher environment. The main objective of CMEIAS is to provide computing tools designed to strengthen microscopy-based approaches for understanding microbial ecology. CMEIAS software contains many measurement features, the most unique of which is an object classifier that automatically categorizes each cell in the image into one of 11 predominant microbial morphotypes, including cocci, spirals, curved rods, U-shaped rods, regular straight rods, unbranched filaments, ellipsoids, clubs, rods with extended prostheca, rudimentary branched rods, and branched filaments. This information is useful for studies on the ecology of microbial populations and communities.

  • Climate Land Interaction Project (CLIP) - East Africa Information Resources and Lesson Plans

    Description:

    The purpose of the Climate Land Interaction Project (CLIP) is to understand the nature and magnitude of the interactions of climate and land use/cover change across East Africa. Researchers are employing a variety of tools to understand these important linkages. These include the use of regional atmospheric models, crop production models, land use/cover change models, satellite remote sensing, role playing simulations and household survey information. Data from several case study areas, located along ecological gradients located on prominent volcanoes (e.g., Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya) are being used to build high resolution models that can be scaled up to the region. The CLIP Website also offers lesson plans geared toward 7th graders.

  • Clinical Genetics Laboratory Services

    Description:

    The MSU Clinical Genetics Laboratory  consists of four service branches including Clinical Cytogenetics, Prenatal Screening, and Molecular Genetics Laboratories including SNP Microarray. These laboratories are members of the MSU Health Team and are CLIA/CAP certified. They offer a wide range of clinical genetics services including cancer, prenatal, pediatric and adult genetics, including Huntington’s disease consultations,  to patients in mid-Michigan, Flint and Kalamazoo. The team is staffed by a board certified clinical geneticist trained in dysmorphology and multiple board certified/board eligible genetic counselors. Patients are evaluated by analyzing available family and medical history data to determine the most appropriate genetic testing. The laboratories provide counseling for patients with various genetic disorders, assist in implementing medical management recommendations and offer support and guidance for families. They also determine and seek insurance preauthorization for various genetic analyses, coordinate testing and followup with results.

  • CoastWatch Reporting System Website

    Description:

    The Sea Grant CoastWatch Website provides the latest available information on Great Lakes surface water temperatures. Sea Grant CoastWatch captures National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration CoastWatch data from satellites that pass over the lakes four times daily, then presents the latest good images to viewers as isothermic maps. CoastWatch site visitors can select from five lakewide, 16 regional and 42 port maps of Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario.
