    Description:

    Co-Integrate is a seminar series designed to support internal networking among colleagues in the College of Natural Science, College of Education, and K-12 school partners interested in the teaching and learning of mathematics in K-16 settings.  This monthly series will feature talks by MSU faculty and graduate students who are working on projects to improve math teaching and learning at MSU and in Michigan more broadly.

  • Connected Mathematics Project and Curriculum

    Description:

    The Connected Mathematics Project (CMP) is a complete mathematics curriculum for middle school teachers and students. It helps students and teachers develop an understanding of important mathematical concepts, skills, procedures, and ways of thinking and reasoning, in number, geometry, measurement, algebra, probability and statistics. CMP is based on research, and was field-tested in diverse sites across the country with approximately 45,000 students and 390 teachers. A growing body of research and evaluation reports indicates that CMP outperforms non-CMP curricula on tests of problem-solving ability, equals or outperforms non-CMP curricula on skills tests, and promotes long term retention.

  • CREATE Science Seminar Series (2016 - 2017)

    Description:

    The purpose of the CREATE Science Seminar series is to help create a vibrant collaborative community at MSU around research in science education K-16, to provide a venue to disseminate and discuss innovative research methods and results, to foster relationships and networking with national and international experts in STEM education research, and ultimately to help solve challenging problems in the teaching and learning of science, K-16.

  • Dessert With Discussion Series: Protecting Michigan Lakes and Rivers from Invasive Species (April 2017)

    Description:

    The Dessert with Discussion Series is a way of connecting the community with both the Kellogg Biological Station and MSU. At each event, the evening's speaker will discuss his/her research, followed by an array of delicious desserts with discussion about the topic. 

    For this Dessert With Discussion event, join us for a discussion on Protecting Michigan lakes and rivers from invasive species with MSU Outreach Specialist, Dr. Jo Latimore.  Aquatic invasive species, such as the zebra mussel and the Eurasian water milfoil plant, have caused severe ecological and economic damage in Michigan. Impacts include declines in fish populations, degraded water quality, loss of recreational opportunities, and property damage. New invaders are discovered regularly, and can spread at an alarming rate across the state.

  • Dunbar Forest Experiment Station (Sault Ste. Marie, MI)

    Description:

    The 5,760-acre Dunbar Forest is the largest and second-oldest MSU off-campus facility. The forest hosts long-term genetics and silvicultural studies that have helped advance the science of forest management in Michigan and the Great Lakes region. For example, red pine is the most widely planted commercial forest species in Michigan, occupying more than 850,000 acres. Successful long-term management of this important resource is based, in large part, on research results from the Dunbar Forest.

  • Field Botany Course (August - September 2017)

    Description:

    Learn about Michigan’s diverse natural vegetation, emphasizing basic ecological principles of plant distribution, and influences on Michigan major vegetation types. You will also learn basic botanical taxonomy and ecology as we get a close-up look at plant parts and identify characteristics for 40-50 plants. You will also develop skills in using family features and a botanical key to identify plants.  The Field Botany course offers two-hour classes, once a week for six weeks. There will be two classroom sessions and four field sections.

  • Forest Biomass Innovation Center (Escanaba, MI)

    Description:

    The 1,745-acre MSU Forest Biomass Innovation Center in Escanaba is leading a number of initiatives to increase the sustainable use of wood in Michigan’s expanding bioeconomy. This wood will come from the surplus growing in the forests and from willow and poplar energy plantations on marginal farm land in the northern parts of the state. Work focuses on increasing yields, decreasing costs, reducing greenhouse gas and energy losses, retaining rural jobs, and improving supply chain efficiencies. Research at the center also focuses on forest genetics, silviculture and forested wetland management.

  • Genomics, Flow Cytometry, Bioinformatics, Proteomics, Mass Spectrometry, and IVIS Imaging Services

    Description:

    The Research Technology Support Facility (RTSF) at Michigan State University is supported and managed by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies.

    • Bioinformatics Core: The Bioinformatics Core has staff specialists who assist in the computational analysis and presentation of Genomic, Proteomic and other complex datasets.
    • Flow Cytometry Core: The Flow Cytometry Core offers two flow cytometers to the MSU community. Both are multiple laser based optical instruments that analyze cell populations for multiple characteristics simultaneously.
    • Genomics Core: The Genomics Core provides single gene to genomic scale DNA sequencing services, DNA fingerprinting and genotyping, quantitative PCR, microarray printing and analysis. 
    • IVIS Spectrum Imaging Core: New to RTSF is the IVIS Spectrum Imaging Core for quantitative bioluminescent and fluorescent (transmission and reflectance) imaging in vivo and in vitro.
    • Mass Spectrometry Core: The Mass Spectrometry Core uses an array of mass spectral techniques for small molecule identification as well as analyses and for Metabolomic profiling.
    • Proteomics Core: The Proteomics Core offers high-throughput mass spectral protein identification and determination of protein expression patterns.
  • Great Lakes Echo News Portal

    Description:

    The Great Lakes Echo news portal is a daily digest of environmental stories that appear in daily newspapers, as well as original reporting by MSU's Knight Center students and MSU's Capital News Service students. One-sentence summaries of each story are linked to the full versions. Subscribers can receive the digest by e-mail or RSS feed.

    Description:

    The Great Lakes Education Program (GLEP) introduces fourth-grade students to the unique features of the Great Lakes through a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience. The program is designed to stimulate interest in the Great Lakes and help students understand their role in protecting these vital freshwater resources.

  • Herbarium

    Description:

    An herbarium is a natural history collection of preserved plants that documents the diversity of plants of the world. The MSU Herbarium represents a worldwide collection of all groups of plants as well as lichens, bryophytes, and fungi. Current holdings number over 530,000 specimens, with approximately 315,000 specimens of vascular plants, 145,000 lichenized fungi, 35,000 non-lichenized fungi, and 35,000 bryophyte specimens.

  • Hidden Lakes Gardens (Tipton, MI)

    Description:

    MSU's Hidden Lake Gardens is Michigan's best kept secret! It covers 755 acres of meadows and oak-hickory woodlands filled with an abundance of native flora and fauna. The Gardens are open 362 days of the year with an admission fee of $3 per person. Self-guided tours are a great way to see the Gardens at your own pace and to suit your personal interest. Guided tours, requested at least two weeks in advance, are available at no additional charge. In addition to more than 6 miles of one-way paved drives, there are 5 miles of hiking trails to allow the visitor a closer look at the beauty that the Gardens provide.

  • Immunodiagnostics and Clinical Flow Cytometry Online Certificate Program

    Location:

    Online and a one-week lab on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI.

    Description:

    This program will train laboratory scientists to use the techniques and flow cytometry equipment to diagnose various medical conditions and learn the techniques to arrive at a diagnosis quicker and with more accuracy. This certificate program is made up of three, two-credit courses. The first two courses are only available online, and the third is a one-week lab taught on the main campus of Michigan State University.

    The Certificate Program is comprised of the following courses:

    • Concepts in Immunodiagnostics (online): BLD 850, 2 credits
    • Clinical Application of Immunodiagnostics Principles (online): BLD 851, 2 credits
    • Immunodiagnostics Laboratory (week-long intensive on-campus format): BLD 852, 2 credits
  • International Short Course: Marker-assisted Breeding (August 2017)

    Description:

    This course in Molecular Breeding will be designed not only to cover the molecular techniques available to a plant breeder for crop improvement but also to cover marker assisted selection with successful examples from around the world. In addition, this course will introduce the participants on how to develop international collaborations in plant breeding and approach funding opportunities nationally, regionally and internationally.

    Using a participatory approach, the course will foster linkages and provide opportunities for networking among participants to exchange their experiences and establish regional collaborations.

  • JINA's (Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics) Visitors Program

    Description:

    The 2017 Spring K-12 Partnership Workshop that looks at the theme "The Kellogg Edge: Breaking boundaries in ecology and evolution education."  This year KBS celebrates 90 years and we plan to continue our tradition of excellence with a full day of sessions featuring cutting edge technologies and forward thinking research. This includes an exciting plenary talk by MSU Distinguished Professor of Integrative Biology, Dr. Kay Holekamp. For almost 30 years now Dr. Holekamp has been dedicated to studying the behavioral ecology and evolution of Hyenas in Kenya.
