  • African Language Classroom Instructional Guide

    Description:

    MSU’s Center for Language Education and Research (CLEAR) offers a tutorial guide written for teachers of African languages. The African Language Tutorial Guide acts as support material for native speakers of African languages who may or may not have a language teaching background, as well as for trained African language teachers. The guide offers three different groupings of lesson plans: basic language-learning lesson plans for beginners, task-based lessons, and cultural-based modules. The guide also has ideas for integrating structure into a communication-based classroom with sections on teaching vocabulary, integrating grammar, and understanding the sound system. There is also a video to be used as a training tool for new language teachers who may not be familiar with the language teaching activities found in the guide.

  • African Language Materials Archive (ALMA)

    Description:

    The African Language Materials Archive, or ALMA, is a multi-partner project focusing on the promotion and documentation of literature and literacy in the languages of Africa. It further serves to assist African language authors and publishers in publicizing and distributing their work.

    The ALMA site, hosted by MATRIX, contains African language video recordings, documentary video, translation work, and bibliographies. African Immigrant Voices Project, one of several AMLA treasures available through the new website, captures the plight and the lives of African diaspora emigrés. This project features a dozen interviews in nine African languages.

  • African Studies Center

    Description:

    MSU's African Studies Center is a multi-disciplinary academic unit that develops and disseminates knowledge relevant to understanding the African continent. It provides language instruction in 30 African languages, in addition to research, teaching and services focused on African society, politics, economy, history, arts, languages, literature, health, education, and agriculture. A majority of the African studies faculty are engaged in development work in food and agriculture; health, disease, and medicine; education and training; communications; rural and urban development; and gender and human rights. These faculty projects are offered in partnership with more than 30 African universities and other agencies.

    Examples of these projects include:

    Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa;
    MSU Institute for Food and Agricultural Standards;
    MSU African Diaspora Research Program;
    Afrobarometer Project; and South Africa National Cultural Heritage Training and Technology Program.

    Outreach services offered by the Center include a Web curriculum for secondary teachers and students, internet resources, publications, events, conferences, seminars, technical assistance, and materials developed for educational use.

  • Asian Studies Center

    Description:

    MSU's Asian Studies Center directs one of the largest, most diverse educational programs on all regions of Asia including East, South, and Southeast Asia. In recent years, the Center has transitioned as the curriculum, faculty research, exchange programs, and outreach activities have developed to embrace programs in diverse places such as India, Indonesia, Korea, and Nepal. Center activities and resourcse include:

    Curricular enrichment through symposia, conferences, concerts, exhibitions, and film series open to all;
    Instruction in Asian languages, including less commonly taught languages such as Nepali, Hindi, Korean, Vietnamese, and Tagalog;
    An Asian Library collection with more than 200,000 titles and access to other rich Asia collections; and
    Outreach programs assisting K-12 teachers, two-and four-year colleges, and Michigan's business and government communities with education curricula and materials.

    Other resources available through the Center include many publications such as the Asia Bulletin, a video collection, lecture series, web links, and access to Asian newspapers.

  • Building a Home with Heart Curriculum - Facilitator's Guide

    Description:

    The Building a Home with Heart curriculum was developed and tailored specifically to the needs of couples who are raising children from the foster care system. The curriculum development process is dynamic and integrates findings from research and training experiences. The training is relevant for adoptive, foster and kinship couples and can be adapted for special populations.

    This curriculum is structured so that the trainer/facilitator can give mini-lectures and receive step-by-step guidance in conducting training activities. Nonetheless it is highly recommended that persons who train the program become trainers/facilitators by completing a “Training of Trainers” program.

  • Canadian Studies Center

    Description:

    The Canadian Studies Center provides teaching, research, and outreach to those interested in the many relationships between Canada and the United States. The Center offers information on Canadian events in the US and Canada, publications, resources for furthering knowledge, and other sources of data for studying and researching Canada. Areas of study include anthropology, American studies, business, economics, English, fisheries and wildlife, food science, geography, history, labor and industrial relations, resource development, and social sciences, as well as teacher education. The Center's Website contains links to Canadian news and funding opportunities for research.

  • Center for Advanced Study of International Development

    Description:

    MSU's Center for Advanced Study of International Development (CASID) promotes and coordinates the work of faculty and students interested in developing countries from the perspectives of the social sciences and liberal arts. CASID has a strong commitment to its outreach mission serving K-12 teachers and students, post-secondary institutions, government, and business.  Outreach resources include: Publications; K-12 Outreach (LATTICE); Midwest Institute for International/Intercultural Education; International Business Institute for Community College Faculty, and International Business Center (CIBER). 

     

  • Center for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies

    Description:

    The Center for European and Russian/Eurasian Studies (CERS) at Michigan State University aims to promote study and understanding of European, Eurasian, and Russian culture, society, and political issues. CERS has developed an exceptional program in European and Eurasian studies, combining formerly separate programs and faculties in Western European Studies and Russian, East European and post-Soviet Studies into an integrated pan-European and Eurasian Center, which emphasizes the need to explore linkages and study emerging challenges that transcend the cold war divisions of Europe and reach authoritatively into Post-Soviet Central Asia. The Center offers undergraduate specializations in Russian and East European Studies (REES) as well as Western European Studies (WES).

    Description:

    The overarching goal of CGCEO is to contribute to the understanding of the interrelations among human, land, and climate systems in an international context, as reflected in MSU’s Boldness by Design. Building on existing strength in interdisciplinary approaches to understand the social processes, land use and land cover patterns and processes, and environmental impacts and responses at regional to global scales, the Center addresses the following key science questions:

    How are social processes altering and impacting global environmental dynamics? How do these changes, in turn, respond to and affect land and human systems?

    The research activities at the Center attempt to identify, understand and model land surface processes; determine and quantify socioeconomic root causes of and responses to global change, and assess human/animal health and ecosystem services.

  • Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies

    Description:

    The Center facilitates learning about this core region of the Americas. It is the nexus between the university curriculum, functional pathways that bring together students from diverse colleges, and fruitful collaborations with other institutions in the US and in the region. The Center enriches formal instruction with experiential learning abroad, film and seminar series, visiting scholars, sponsored events, faculty and student research, and ready access to scholarly resources through campus repositories and loan programs.

  • Exploring Africa K-12 Curriculum

    Exploring Africa is an educational web-based curriculum and resource site developed for use in a classroom setting. Materials developed for Exploring Africa fulfill social studies and humanities national- and state-level standards and benchmarks for global education and the study of Africa. Exploring Africa includes:

    • A five-unit (25-module) comprehensive interactive curriculum that focuses on Africa through the social sciences and humanities.
    • Separate teacher and student pages.
    • A current events page with a new feature story developed each month.
    • Printable resources.
    • Country fact sheets.
    • Links to African newspapers and radio stations.

  • Folk Arts in Education - A Resource Handbook II

    Description:

    Folk Arts in Education: A Resource Handbook II examines the state of folklife and folk arts in education projects around the U.S. with sample curricula from over 50 exemplary programs for youth in educational settings in K-12 schools, youth-serving organizations arts and humanities councils, museums, and cultural heritage and folk arts nonprofit organizations.

    Folklife programs in schools and after-school programs bring young people in touch with their communities, their ethnic identities, the authentic cultural expressions of their own families and others through direct participation and ethnographic methods using photography, video, radio, audio recordings, exhibitions, festival, and residencies with tradition-bearers. A web resources section links educators to folk arts programs nationwide.

  • H-AfrTeach- Online Forum for Teaching About Africa

    H-AfrTeach is a discussion list that has as its mission to provide a stimulating forum for considering the possibilities and challenges in teaching about Africa. Resources include: Discussion Logs; Book Reviews; Course Syllabi; Links; Articles; Images; Lessons; and more.

    MSU's H-Net is hosted by MATRIX: The Center for Humane Arts, Letters, and Social Sciences Online, within the College of Arts and Letters. H-Net is an international interdisciplinary organization of scholars and teachers dedicated to developing the enormous potential of the Internet and the World Wide Web. Its edited lists and Web sites publish peer reviewed articles, multimedia materials, and discussions for colleagues and the interested public. More than 65,000 professors and teachers use H-Net on a daily basis.

  • Institute for Public Policy and Social Research

    Description:

    MSU's Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR) applies research to important public policy issues, and strengthens relationships between the academic and policymaker communities. IPPSR is involved in:

    • Promoting and conducting interdisciplinary research on public policy issues;
    • Providing survey research and evaluation services through the Office for Survey Research;
    • Producing public policy and political leadership education and training programs such as the Legislative Leadership Program, Michigan Political Leadership Program, and Tomorrow's Political Leaders; and
    • Engaging in problem solving discussions around pressing societal needs.

    Examples of projects include the State of the State Survey, the National College Health Assessment survey, and the Thumb Rural Health Network Survey. IPPSR offers an annual Policy Forum Series, which serves as an interactive meeting about issues facing Michigan communities. The Institute's Web site also contains searchable publications, information on special projects, and links to related public policy Web sites.

  • Julian Samora Research Institute

    Description:

    MSU's Julian Samora Research Institute (JSRI), in the College of Social Science, is committed to serving the needs of Latino communities in the Midwest through research on the social, economic, educational, and political condition of these communities. The Institute is involved in:

    • Conducting research and transmitting the research findings to academic institutions, government officials, community leaders, and private sector executives;
    • Disseminating knowledge through publications, seminars, workshops, and private consultation;
    • Providing technical expertise and support to Latino communities for developing policy responses to local problems; and
    • Developing Hispanic human capital through leadership development, empowerment, and education.

    Current research/outreach initiatives target the needs of the Hispanic community in the areas of economic development, education, and families and neighborhoods. JSRI publishes several reports and papers on recent research, as well as produces the NEXO Newsletter, the official newsletter of the Institute and an assortment of books. The Institute's Web site contains information on employment, events in lower Michigan, Latino News, and profiles on companies and institutions who serve the Latino communities. The Institute, in collaboration with MSU Libraries' Special Collections, also has a Virtual Collection with audio and video, publications, and photos of Dr. Julian Samora.

    The mission of the Julian Samora Research Institute is to generate, disseminate, and apply knowledge to serve the needs of Latino communities in the Midwest and across the nation.  The Institute offers a variety of informational resources covering many Michigan Latino topics.

  • Land Use and Planning Resources: MSU Extension

    Description:

    Michigan State University Extension offers a broad variety of training courses and presentations on public policy topics related to local planning and zoning tools and techniques, planning policy options, land use and environmental issues, public participation programs, leadership development, community/economic development, and more. This service is available for Michigan’s 1,858 local governments (townships, villages, cities, counties), 14 multi-county regions, 12 federally recognized tribal nations, and interested citizens and activist groups. MSU Extension provides accurate information on planning and zoning techniques, as well as current “best practices.”
