    The mission of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability is to develop and maintain a center of excellence that integrates ecology with socioeconomics, demography, and other disciplines for ecological sustainability from local, national, to global scales.   • Climate Land Interaction Project (CLIP) - East Africa Information Resources and Lesson Plans

    Description:

    The purpose of the Climate Land Interaction Project (CLIP) is to understand the nature and magnitude of the interactions of climate and land use/cover change across East Africa. Researchers are employing a variety of tools to understand these important linkages. These include the use of regional atmospheric models, crop production models, land use/cover change models, satellite remote sensing, role playing simulations and household survey information. Data from several case study areas, located along ecological gradients located on prominent volcanoes (e.g., Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya) are being used to build high resolution models that can be scaled up to the region. The CLIP Website also offers lesson plans geared toward 7th graders.

  • Confucius Institute Services for Educators and School Districts

    Description:

    The Confucius Institute at Michigan State University consults with and assists schools and other organizations to develop customized Chinese language and cultural learning programs. CI-MSU also helps schools and school districts recruit qualified Chinese teachers and provides instructional materials, on-going professional development, and on-site support.

  • Corrections School of Staff and Command (January - June 2017)

    Description:

    Michigan State University will be hosting its first ever Corrections School of Staff and Command starting in January, 2017.  This class is designed specifically for individuals that serve as leaders or managers in a correctional facility.   The 400-hour problem-based course utilizes a blend of classroom facilitated learning and cutting edge distance learning technologies.

    Problem-based learning (PBL) represents the next generation in criminal justice training by fostering critical thinking, and employing learning philosophies appropriate in today’s correctional environment.

  • Counter-Terrorism Awareness Online Training for U.S. Law Enforcement Officers

    Description:

    This is a FREE, self-paced, web-based training program available to verified U.S. law enforcement personnel via the Internet (E-Learning course). It contains the same information as the one-day classroom lecture workshop Anti-Terrorism Training for Law Enforcement presented by the Michigan Regional Community Policing Institute. It provides a working knowledge of terrorist and criminal extremist groups and individuals, their activities and tactics, and how to recognize and report indicators of terrorism/criminal extremism.

  • D.A.R.E. Michigan Training Center

    Description:

    MSU's School of Criminal Justice heads up the D.A.R.E. Michigan Training Center, which serves as a resource for police officers to bring a clear, comprehensive, and consistent K-12 D.A.R.E. message to kids in Michigan's classrooms to enhance children's development of healthy positive behaviors. Goals of the Center include:

    • Communicating the D.A.R.E. message through elementary, junior high, and senior high curricula;
    • Establishing statewide awareness of the D.A.R.E. program and how it can assist the fight against drugs and violence in schools and communities;
    • Serving as an information resource for the accumulation, interpretation, and dissemination of the D.A.R.E message; and
    • Offering the best training and technical assistance to provide schools and communities with quality D.A.R.E. police officers.

    The Center is also involved in the evaluation of the New D.A.R.E Program curricula, which will be administered to middle school and high schools in six cities across the country.

  • Dyadic Data Analysis Workshop (July 2017)

    Description:

    The workshop will focus on analyses for data in which both members of a dyad are measured on the same set of variables. Topics to be addressed include the measurement of nonindependence, the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model, the analysis of distinguishable and indistinguishable dyads, and the analysis of over-time dyadic data (e.g., dyadic growth curve models). The software package used in the workshop will be SPSS. Although the workshop does not require any prior knowledge or experience with multilevel modeling, participants are expected to have a working knowledge of multiple regression and analysis of variance, as well as SPSS. This four-day workshop (with an optional ½ day on Friday) will include a lecture component with hands-on application of the material covered in lecture, as well as one-on-one consultation meetings concerning participants’ actual research and data analytic questions. There will be time for individual meetings with workshop instructors from 3:00pm to 5:00pm each afternoon, as well as on Friday morning 9:00-12:00. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring their own data so that they can apply these new methods to their own projects.

    For children in the child welfare system, a disproportionate number of them have little to no exposure to early education services. This training will work with participants to identify the struggles and successes of combining the child welfare system with early education. Additionally, this training will provide tangible and real-world solutions to creating an improved team environment for all involved in a child’s case.

  • ÊSTIMATE -- Early Summer Tutorial In Modern Applied Tools of Econometrics (June 2017)

    Description:

    ÊSTIMATE is an intensive weekend workshop taught by world class econometricians. ÊSTIMATE’s focus is modern econometric tools as used in practice. Participants learn methods and techniques to use immediately in their empirical research.  ÊSTIMATE’s goal is to broaden and improve the practice of econometric methods throughout empirical research and data analysis in academics, industry and government. The 2017 presentations focus on understanding when various models and estimation methods are appropriate as well as how to conduct proper inference in a variety of settings. Methods are illustrated with empirical examples using the econometrics software package Stata. Participants receive access to course/workshop materials including presentation slides, notes, data sets, and Stata .do files.

    Eye on Africa is a weekly seminar series that provides scholars, policy-makers, applied practitioners, students, and the interested public with cutting-edge and highly-contextualized knowledge about the African continent. Emerging and established scholars share the results of their recent research, with time for audience questions and comments. The series draws on a diverse group of presenters to create an inclusive, holistic view of African history, social movements, the economy, and politics.

  • First Line Supervisor Training Course for Law Enforcement (September/October 2017)

    Description:

    Center for Police Executive Development Command Officer Development Police Executive Development Series School of Staff and CommandThe 80-hour First Line Supervision course is offered via a blended course of instructional delivery consisting of 3 days in a retreat setting where learners are required to stay on location. This is followed the next week with 3 days of facilitated distance learning. In the third week the learner will participate in 4 days of classroom instruction at the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office in Charlotte, for a total of 80 instructional hours. The instructional format is problem-based learning (PBL) – the next generation in law enforcement training.

  • Folk Arts in Education - A Resource Handbook II

    Description:

    Folk Arts in Education: A Resource Handbook II examines the state of folklife and folk arts in education projects around the U.S. with sample curricula from over 50 exemplary programs for youth in educational settings in K-12 schools, youth-serving organizations arts and humanities councils, museums, and cultural heritage and folk arts nonprofit organizations.

    Folklife programs in schools and after-school programs bring young people in touch with their communities, their ethnic identities, the authentic cultural expressions of their own families and others through direct participation and ethnographic methods using photography, video, radio, audio recordings, exhibitions, festival, and residencies with tradition-bearers. A web resources section links educators to folk arts programs nationwide.
