    Description:

    The Center for European and Russian/Eurasian Studies (CERS) at Michigan State University aims to promote study and understanding of European, Eurasian, and Russian culture, society, and political issues. CERS has developed an exceptional program in European and Eurasian studies, combining formerly separate programs and faculties in Western European Studies and Russian, East European and post-Soviet Studies into an integrated pan-European and Eurasian Center, which emphasizes the need to explore linkages and study emerging challenges that transcend the cold war divisions of Europe and reach authoritatively into Post-Soviet Central Asia. The Center offers undergraduate specializations in Russian and East European Studies (REES) as well as Western European Studies (WES).

    Description:

    The overarching goal of CGCEO is to contribute to the understanding of the interrelations among human, land, and climate systems in an international context, as reflected in MSU’s Boldness by Design. Building on existing strength in interdisciplinary approaches to understand the social processes, land use and land cover patterns and processes, and environmental impacts and responses at regional to global scales, the Center addresses the following key science questions:

    How are social processes altering and impacting global environmental dynamics? How do these changes, in turn, respond to and affect land and human systems?

    The research activities at the Center attempt to identify, understand and model land surface processes; determine and quantify socioeconomic root causes of and responses to global change, and assess human/animal health and ecosystem services.

  • Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies

    Description:

    The Center facilitates learning about this core region of the Americas. It is the nexus between the university curriculum, functional pathways that bring together students from diverse colleges, and fruitful collaborations with other institutions in the US and in the region. The Center enriches formal instruction with experiential learning abroad, film and seminar series, visiting scholars, sponsored events, faculty and student research, and ready access to scholarly resources through campus repositories and loan programs.

  • Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability

    The mission of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability is to develop and maintain a center of excellence that integrates ecology with socioeconomics, demography, and other disciplines for ecological sustainability from local, national, to global scales. The objectives include: conducting cutting-edge research on emerging issues related to ecological sustainability; training new generations of leading scholars for interdisciplinary research; and disseminating research findings across the globe.

    Description:

    Pain affects more than 100 million U.S. residents and most social workers will work with clients and families whose lives have been touched by chronic pain. This online course will review the biopsychosocial components of comprehensive pain assessment and integrative treatment approaches. Three pain assessment and management interventions appropriate for use by social workers will be emphasized.

  • Climate Land Interaction Project (CLIP) - East Africa Information Resources and Lesson Plans

    Description:

    The purpose of the Climate Land Interaction Project (CLIP) is to understand the nature and magnitude of the interactions of climate and land use/cover change across East Africa. Researchers are employing a variety of tools to understand these important linkages. These include the use of regional atmospheric models, crop production models, land use/cover change models, satellite remote sensing, role playing simulations and household survey information. Data from several case study areas, located along ecological gradients located on prominent volcanoes (e.g., Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya) are being used to build high resolution models that can be scaled up to the region. The CLIP Website also offers lesson plans geared toward 7th graders.

  • Common Childhood Diagnoses and Directive Play Therapy Techniques That Help Treat Them (March 2018)

    Description:

    In this workshop, you will gain knowledge on common childhood mental health disorders and experientially explore ways to treat these disorders in play therapy. You will explore symptoms typically seen in common diagnoses of attention deficit disorder (ADHD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and adjustment issues. You will examine the overlapping themes such as lack of self-regulation, anger management issues, inattention, social skill problems, and coping skills. You will learn play therapy activities to explicate ways to help treat these common issues through play therapy. This workshop will utilize active learning, including strategies for feeling awareness and identification, projective projects for assessment and to increase self-awareness, anger management activities, teaching social skills, and relaxation techniques.

    Description:

    The Confucius Institute at Michigan State University consults with and assists schools and other organizations to develop customized Chinese language and cultural learning programs. CI-MSU also helps schools and school districts recruit qualified Chinese teachers and provides instructional materials, on-going professional development, and on-site support.

  • Conservation Criminology Graduate Certificate Program (Online)

    Description:

    The Conservation Criminology certificate program prepares scholars and practitioners to improve efforts to reduce environmental problems. The certificate consists of three online courses that introduce key environmental risks and crimes, including wildlife poaching, illegal wildlife and hazardous waste trade, corporate environmental harms, environmental justice, eco-terrorism, climate change, and environmental security. The three courses are Environmental Risk Perception and Decision-Making; Corporate Environmental Crime and Risk; and Global Risks, Conservation, and Criminology. Course materials draw on theories, methods, and interventions from criminology and criminal justice, natural resources management, and risk and decision sciences. Students who complete the certificate will have improved capacity to work with individuals from multiple disciplines and professionals working in the field to address real world environmental problems.

    Description:

    Michigan State University will be hosting its Corrections School of Staff and Command in September 2017.  This class is designed specifically for individuals that serve as leaders or managers in a correctional facility.   The 400-hour problem-based course utilizes a blend of classroom facilitated learning and cutting edge distance learning technologies.

    Problem-based learning (PBL) represents the next generation in criminal justice training by fostering critical thinking, and employing learning philosophies appropriate in today’s correctional environment.

  • Counter-Terrorism Awareness Online Training for U.S. Law Enforcement Officers

    This is a FREE, self-paced, web-based training program available to verified U.S. law enforcement personnel via the Internet (E-Learning course). It contains the same information as the one-day classroom lecture workshop Anti-Terrorism Training for Law Enforcement presented by the Michigan Regional Community Policing Institute. It provides a working knowledge of terrorist and criminal extremist groups and individuals, their activities and tactics, and how to recognize and report indicators of terrorism/criminal extremism.

  • Current Trends in Medicare and Medicaid: A Crisis for Our Aging Adults (February 2018)

    In this workshop, you will discuss the current status of Medicare and Medicaid for the aging population. In addition, you will learn about the current changes in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and how they affect care for our aging consumers, including access to care and challenges in procuring direct care providers. You will also learn strategies for advocating for care and coverage for your clientele. This workshop will utilize large group discussion and visual displays for learning.

  • D.A.R.E. Michigan Training Center

    Description:

    MSU's School of Criminal Justice heads up the D.A.R.E. Michigan Training Center, which serves as a resource for police officers to bring a clear, comprehensive, and consistent K-12 D.A.R.E. message to kids in Michigan's classrooms to enhance children's development of healthy positive behaviors. Goals of the Center include:

    • Communicating the D.A.R.E. message through elementary, junior high, and senior high curricula;
    • Establishing statewide awareness of the D.A.R.E. program and how it can assist the fight against drugs and violence in schools and communities;
    • Serving as an information resource for the accumulation, interpretation, and dissemination of the D.A.R.E message; and
    • Offering the best training and technical assistance to provide schools and communities with quality D.A.R.E. police officers.

    The Center is also involved in the evaluation of the New D.A.R.E Program curricula, which will be administered to middle school and high schools in six cities across the country.

  • Demystifying End-of-life Conversations (March 2018)

    Description:

    Talking about death often provokes discomfort, anxiety, and fear. This workshop will provide an opportunity to explore issues surrounding one’s own death, including the business of death, funerals and rituals, and end-of-life conversations with family and friends. You will exam these components of death, enabling you to increase your comfort level in conversations with clients, to become better advocates, and to understand how the grief trajectory may be influenced by events that do or do not happen at the time of death.

  • Dia de la Mujer Conference (April 2018)

    This annual conference has provided a much needed space for Latinas in Michigan to affect social change and to highlight their accomplishments. Keynote presenters, forums and workshops facilitated by Latina women will provide conference participants with networking opportunities for employment, education and sharing life experiences. Topics have included education, health, politics, community, family, history, culture, career and personal development. Over two-dozen workshops will be offered for participants of all ages and life phases, including adults, college students, and K-12 students.
