  • ADA In the Workplace - Joint Management of Disability Programs

    Description:

    In the spirit of comprehensive coverage, the Americans with Disabilities Act is often ambiguous, making the opportunity for conflict within the workplace high. ADA in the Workplace - Joint Management of Disability Programs provides participants with a set of tools that enables them to anticipate and mediate conflicts before they become disputes. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides a mechanism for protecting qualified disabled individuals from discriminatory actions on the part of employers with 15 or more employees.

    Description:

    The week-long Certified Workers' Compensation Professional (CWCP) program provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to be recognized as a professional in this field. Attendees should have some experience in workers' compensation. Seminar topics include Principles of Disability Law; Claims Management & Insurance; Safety; Disability Prevention and Management Issues; and Medical Issues. 

  • Exploring and Designing Workplace Teams Workshop

    Description:

    MSU's Union Management Initiatives offers a wide range of open-enrollment workshops and site-specific interventions.  Exploring and Designing Workplace Teams assists labor and management participants in increasing the knowledge and skills they need to build a strong foundation for teams. Unionized organizations have a unique opportunity to improve organizational performance through the joint design, implementation, and oversight of workplace teams. With labor and management participating fully and equally in the process, the organization creates a base for achieving results greater than might be achieved through a unilateral approach.

  • Facilitation Skills and Techniques Workshop

    Description:

    Facilitation Skills and Techniques (Facilitator Institute) focuses on the training of individuals who can effectively facilitate process improvement and problem solving efforts in public or private sector organizations. The five-day program represents an intensive period of training that provides substantive learning, interactive exercises to apply the principles, and the building of a toolkit of techniques useful in working with teams, task forces, and other groups.

    Description:

    The goals of this workshop are to help participants:

    • Define workplace bullying and cyberbullying
    • Identify the costs and consequences of workplace bullying
    • Understand what it takes for behavior to rise to the level of unlawful harassment under federal legislation
    • Communicate in a supportive manner to deescalate difficult situations and minimize bullying
    • Develop and implement workplace bullying and harassment policies
    • Conduct effective investigations into allegations of harassment or bullying
    • Select and implement an appropriate course of action based on the specific situation and underlying causes
  • Human Resources Executive Education

    Description:

    Human Resources Executive Education (HREE) provides continuing education programs for human resources, labor relations, and management professionals. It conducts open enrollment and on-site programs in every state and the District of Columbia. Seminars are led by instructors chosen for their professional knowledge, theoretical expertise and extensive practical experience. Seminars are usually limited to 30 participants to stimulate networking and a more personal learning environment. All programs can be adapted for in-house supervisory training and can be customized to an organization's specific needs. Custom course program topics include:

    • Core supervisory skills (e.g., employment law basics, retention, discipline and discharge, and change management);
    • Leadership skills;
    • Equal Employment Opportunity, Affirmative Action, Workplace Diversity;
    • Creating an Harassment-Free Workplace;
    • Administering the Family and Medical Leave Act;
    • Facilitating Organizational Change;
    • Administering the Labor Contract; and
    • Negotiating the Labor Contract.

    In addition, HREE offers the following workshops:

    • Certified Human Resource Specialist;
    • Certified Labor Relations Professional; and
    • Preparing For and Negotiating the Labor Contract.
  • Improving the Effectiveness of Joint Labor-Management Relationships Workshop

    Description:

    This two-day interactive workshop is designed to assist organizations in improving the functioning of their current labor-management relationship and, where desired, strengthen the foundation on which a range of joint labor-management initiatives might be built. The program engages labor and management in a process in which they assess their readiness and capability to work more effectively together, construct a vision of their future relationship that they can each commit to, and identify the barriers that they must address to improve the effectiveness of their relationship.

  • Labor Education Program (LEP) for Union Leaders and Members

    Description:

    The Labor Education Program brings together University faculty and Union leadership to provide training for union leaders and members. LEP works closely with the labor movement on local, state, and national levels to further guarantee that programs are designed to fit the needs of local membership as well as International Union staff. LEP provides an extensive curriculum in leadership and bargaining skills, labor law, communications, labor economics, and government. Targeted training and tutorials can be designed to assist unions with emerging trends and teach new skills. LEP faculty are available to consult with unions on specific training needs and help union leadership design and implement educational programs that benefit their members.

  • Lean Production Workshop

    Description:

    Lean Production is a system of work organization that strives to deliver high quality, low-cost products through the efficient use of resources and the elimination of waste. In the session, participants will learn about the principles and practices of lean production systems and discuss the forces that are driving manufacturing firms to change the way that they work. Participants will discuss what "lean" means to the production worker and to the front-line manager, particularly with respect to work standards, job rotation, teamwork, job intensity, and cooperative labor-management processes.  A central feature of the workshop is a simulation that will provide an opportunity for a hands-on experience of a lean work system. The simulation is designed to illustrate many of the tangible and intangible differences between mass production and lean production systems as well as to surface questions and tension points that typically need to be addressed when implementing a lean production system.

    The primary objective of this program is to develop highly effective negotiators who can add value by crafting agreements that facilitate a positive and productive workplace. It has been designed to prepare you to think strategically about how your negotiation strategy aligns with, and best supports, your business and organizational plans. It has also been designed to give you an in-depth, contemporary understanding of how to conduct negotiations effectively.

  • Organizational Climate Assessment Workshop

    Description:

    Organizational Climate Assessment is a joint labor-management employee opinion survey and problem-solving process. Employee opinions are a barometer of an organization's health and can be used to identify issues that can drain morale, productivity, quality, and competitiveness. Survey results can be used in a structured problem-solving process to foster constructive organizational change. PIERS facilitates a structured process to identify and resolve workplace issues and to implement changes to improve organizational functioning. PIERS staff work with a steering committee comprised of labor and management leadership within the organization to design a survey and problem-solving process tailored to the specific needs of the organization and the workforce.

    Description:

    "Our Daily Work/ Our Daily Lives" is a cooperative project that focuses on the cultural traditions of workers, workplaces as contexts for the expression of workers culture, and the diversity of historical and artistic presentations of workers' lives. "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" explores the richness and diversity of worker experience and workers culture with exhibits, lectures and presentations; writing and research projects; and reunions, dialogues, demonstrations and discussions. 

  • Strategic Planning and Training for Labor and Management Leadership Workshop

    Description:

    Strategic Planning and Training for Labor and Management Leadership is a workshop designed to build a common knowledge base among an organization's key union and management leaders about strategic choices associated with the design and implementation of workplace changes within the context of the collective bargaining agreement. The workshop also assists labor and management to build a common vision and common commitment around next steps associated with the contemplated workplace changes.

  • Team-Based Group Process Skills Workshop

    Description:

    Team-Based Group Process Skills is a six-module series that focuses on the skills and understanding necessary to participate effectively in group/team processes. The modules cover the History and Nature of Workplace Change Initiatives, Effective Communications Skills, Group Problem Solving Techniques, Resolving Conflicts in Groups, Decision-Making in Groups, and Team Dynamics: Effective Group Processes.
