  • Ag Action Day (January 2018)

    Description:

    Ag Action provides a full day of educational sessions focusing on agriculture, food safety and home gardening topics, featuring a trade show highlighting products and services provided by local businesses.  The Restricted Use Pesticide Exam will be given between 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.  If you are only taking the RUP Exam there will be an admission fee of $5 for entrance to Ag Action. This fee does not include lunch or cost of the exam.

  • Agricultural Industries Certificate Program

    280 Plant and Soil Sciences Building, MSU, East Lansing, MI, 48824.

    Description:

    This 18-month program integrates a wide range of disciplines including business, leadership, technology and communications through hands-on laboratory learning and classroom formats.  Of the 48 credits required for the Certificate, 30 are for required classes and the remaining 18 credits can vary with area of interest including agronomy, animal science, horticulture, welding and mechanics.  It is possible for students to complete the Agricultural Industries Certificate and transfer on to a four-year degree program. This program consists of both on-campus learning and hands-on experiences through a professional internship. The program also allows students the flexibility to focus on agronomy, horticulture, animal science or agricultural business.

    Description:

    Photovoltaic (PV) panels are an increasingly common sight on urban rooftops and rural properties across the U.S. The declining cost of equipment and installation makes installing a behind-the-electric-meter (net metered) solar electric system enticing for many farmers. Evaluating the financial prudence of an investment in solar requires careful consideration of installation costs, the value of production, and operation and maintenance costs. This six part webinar series will provide practical guidance to farmers who are considering investing in a solar electric system so they are able to make fully informed investment decisions.

    Description:

  • Farmer Field School Workshop: Shoulder Season and Root Crop Production (November 2017)

  • Long-Term Ecological Research

    Description:

    The Kellogg Biological Station Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) Program studies the ecology of intensive field crop ecosystems and its environmental consequences as part of a National Network of LTER Sites established by the National Science Foundation in 1980. The KBS LTER joined the network in 1988. LTER research at KBS is designed to answer the broader question of how agronomic management can better utilize biological resources in cropping systems to control pests, provide nitrogen, and build soil fertility: In short, how to make agriculture more profitable and provide environmental benefits.

    Our main research areas include agronomy, microbial ecology, plant dynamics, insect dynamics, biogeochemistry, regionalization, ecosystem services, and biofuels. Our experimental systems range from field plots to landscapes. We study the ecology of major field crop ecosystems – annual crops such as corn, soybean, and wheat, perennial crops such as alfalfa, and biofuel crops such as switchgrass and poplars. We also study the natural, unmanaged ecosystems that occur in agricultural landscapes, such as forests and old fields.

  • Market Outlook and Price Forecasts for Grain and Livestock

    Description:

    This resource offers up-to-date commodity outlooks and probabalistic price forecasts for corn, wheat, soybeans, soybean meal, live cattle and feeder cattle, lean hogs, and milk. Also included are USDA balance sheets for corn, wheat, and soybeans. Price forecasts are updated weekly during the fall and spring semesters.

    During this day-long workshop, Dr. Bridget Behe, Michigan State University professor of horticulture, will discuss all aspects of marketing products at your retail garden center. Topics that will be discussed include how to understand your current customer base, customer behaviors while shopping, your pricing strategy, how to design effective displays, and much more. Please bring your businesses’ mission statement and the hardest item you sell (or a photo of it). Registration ($69) includes lunch, morning and afternoon snack, and handouts.

  • Michigan AgrAbility Program for Agricultural Workers With Disabilities

    Description:

    The Michigan AgrAbility Program assists agricultural workers who have physical and mental disabilities, including such disabilities as amputation, arthritis, spinal cord injury, and hearing impairments. Education and evaluation assistance are available to accommodate disabilities, eliminate barriers, and create a favorable climate among rural service providers for people with disabilities. Established in 1992 by MSU Extension's Farm Safety Program, the Michigan AgrAbility Program is now under the direction of the Easter Seals Society of Michigan, Inc. Michigan State University Extension's Farm Safety Program is a source of information on the Michigan AgrAbility Program for farmers with disabilities who wish to remain in agricultural work occupations.

    The MFFC is a forum for beginning, small-scale and culturally diverse farmers to network, learn and build sustainable family farms. For the past eleven years, the conference has helped connect farmers from across the state to important resources and learn how to make their farms more sustainable and more viable. Some topics include: Food safety and post-harvest processing; relocalizing small grains to niche markets; the Farm Bill and USDA programs; rotational grazing; integrated pest management; choosing the right farmers market; workshops in Spanish; racial equity and food justice; beginning farmer initiatives; the Study-A-Farm program; and programs for youth.
