    Description:

    Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), is based upon the principle that “the proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the fear and incidence of crime, and the improvement in the quality of life. The seminar will focus upon basic CPTED skills and knowledge required by law enforcement officers and persons involved in community planning activities.

    Description:

    The overarching goal of CGCEO is to contribute to the understanding of the interrelations among human, land, and climate systems in an international context, as reflected in MSU’s Boldness by Design. Building on existing strength in interdisciplinary approaches to understand the social processes, land use and land cover patterns and processes, and environmental impacts and responses at regional to global scales, the Center addresses the following key science questions:

    How are social processes altering and impacting global environmental dynamics? How do these changes, in turn, respond to and affect land and human systems?

    The research activities at the Center attempt to identify, understand and model land surface processes; determine and quantify socioeconomic root causes of and responses to global change, and assess human/animal health and ecosystem services.

  • Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability

    Description:

    The mission of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability is to develop and maintain a center of excellence that integrates ecology with socioeconomics, demography, and other disciplines for ecological sustainability from local, national, to global scales. The objectives include: conducting cutting-edge research on emerging issues related to ecological sustainability; training new generations of leading scholars for interdisciplinary research; and disseminating research findings across the globe.

  • Center for Water Sciences

    Description:

    The Center for Water Sciences (CWS) at MSU is comprised of interdisciplinary scientific teams of MSU faculty and students who investigate and provide solutions to current, emerging, and future environmental problems that face local, national, and global water systems. The CWS researchers are dedicated to promoting the integration of traditional fields of science to address water-related issues and research that focus on ecosystems and human health. Their goal is to advance scientific research and knowledge for understanding, protecting, and restoring water resources and their sustainable use by humans and ecosystems around the Great Lakes and the world. The CWS investigators address a variety of research topics including antibiotics in water and development of microbial resistance, viral pathogens and waterborne disease, the complexity of natural and human influences on biodiversity and valued attributes of aquatic ecosystems within watersheds, and the effects of contaminants with global origins.

    Description:

    Distinguished scientists in ecology or evolutionary biology who reside at KBS for a week over the summer will offer formal seminars, informal discussions and one-on-one dialogue with students. To prepare for the seminars, students are expected to read selected publications by each speaker in his or her current research and participate in post-seminar discussions.  1 - 2 credits.

    Description:

    Students learn about the relationships between plants, animals and the physical world. The class explores population, community and ecosystem level processes in a wide variety of aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Students are introduced to basic ecological principles and how they can be used to solve environmental problems. Students will learn a variety of sampling techniques, how to analyze data and will present results of the field labs to the class. 4 credits (Course: 3, Lab: 1). There are prerequisites.

    The Economic Analysis of Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems websiteintroduces basic techniques that can be applied to analyze the economic viability of sustainable agricultural and food systems.     Description:

    The Great Lakes Echo news portal is a daily digest of environmental stories that appear in daily newspapers, as well as original reporting by MSU's Knight Center students and MSU's Capital News Service students. One-sentence summaries of each story are linked to the full versions. Subscribers can receive the digest by e-mail or RSS feed.

  • Institute of Water Research

    Description:

    MSU's Institute of Water Research (IWR) provides timely information on contemporary land and water resource issues through coordinated multidisciplinary efforts and advanced information and networking systems. The IWR seeks to strengthen MSU's efforts in nontraditional education, outreach, and interdisciplinary studies using available advanced technology, and partnerships with local, state, regional, and federal organizations and individuals. Activities include coordinating education and training programs on surface and ground water protection, land use and watershed management. Research areas include: modeling, water quality, and agriculture.

  • Junior Citizen Planner Program

    Description:

    This fun, hands-on curriculum helps youth understand the connection between civics, the environment, and our community. The Junior Citizen Planner program develops participants' skills in becoming good citizens and responsible decision-makers, and will develop community pride.   • Knight Center for Environmental Journalism

    Description:

    MSU's Knight Center for Environmental Journalism, in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, teaches student and professional journalists how to better report on the world’s most important beat.  The program serves undergraduate and graduate students and professional reporters with specialized training.  Students learn from environmental experts and journalists and report for professional award-winning publications and broadcast outlets. Under the guidance of expert faculty they experiment with new ways of explaining complex environmental issues while maintaining traditional values of fairness and accuracy.  Students who study with the center produce and publish professional level journalism, gaining valuable experience and material for building resumes.  The center also organizes and teaches workshops in the U.S. and abroad to help professional reporters improve their coverage of the environment.

    Description:

    The goal of the Lake and Stream Leader’s Institute is to develop a core of local water/land resource leaders who will promote lake, stream and watershed management partnerships with state natural resource agencies and encourage and instruct other citizens in resource management.  The Institute is conducted in three in-depth sessions that include classroom learning and field experience and practice.  

     

  • Long-Term Ecological Research

    Description:

    The Kellogg Biological Station Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) Program studies the ecology of intensive field crop ecosystems and its environmental consequences as part of a National Network of LTER Sites established by the National Science Foundation in 1980. The KBS LTER joined the network in 1988. LTER research at KBS is designed to answer the broader question of how agronomic management can better utilize biological resources in cropping systems to control pests, provide nitrogen, and build soil fertility: In short, how to make agriculture more profitable and provide environmental benefits.

    Our main research areas include agronomy, microbial ecology, plant dynamics, insect dynamics, biogeochemistry, regionalization, ecosystem services, and biofuels. Our experimental systems range from field plots to landscapes. We study the ecology of major field crop ecosystems – annual crops such as corn, soybean, and wheat, perennial crops such as alfalfa, and biofuel crops such as switchgrass and poplars. We also study the natural, unmanaged ecosystems that occur in agricultural landscapes, such as forests and old fields.

  • Michigan County and Statewide Historic Aerial Imagery Archive

    Description:

    The RS&GIS Aerial Imagery Archive is home to the largest repository of remotely-sensed imagery for the State of Michigan. The collection features:

    • County and statewide historic aerial photography datasets acquired by state and federal agencies dating from the 1920's to the 2000's.
    • The Archive generally maintains at least one photoset per decade for every location in Michigan
    • County, State, and Federal digital orthoimagery datasets.
    • GIS-ready datasets
    • Unique datasets such as Great Lakes shoreline imagery, high altitude color infrared photography, large-scale project-level photography, etc.

    The majority of the collection has been scanned. Imagery may be ordered via e-mail/phone/fax and delivered via digital transfer over the Internet. Imagery may also be accessed on site by appointment.

  • Michigan Natural Features Inventory

    Description:

    The Michigan Natural Features Inventory (MNFI) is a comprehensive, continuously updated source of data on Michigan's endangered, threatened, or special concern plant and animal species, natural communities, and other natural features. MNFI offers several resources, including: survey forms for recording observations on special plant and animal species; lists of endangered and threatened animals, special animals and plants, natural communities, and resources; abstracts; maps; publications, including quarterly and annual reports; and information on many types of permit applications.

  • Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program

    Description:

    This program is intended to organize efforts of state agencies, Michigan State University (MSU), and environmental advocacy groups to advance the environmental stewardship of the Turfgrass industry and to recognize environmental achievements. This program is based around 12 modules that need to be completed for certification. Once completed a site visit is conducted to verify all items are completed by a trained MTESP Stewardship Specialist.

  • Nature and Environmental Writing (May, June 2017)

    Description:

    What are the spaces of nature? What are the spaces for writing nature? How might the way we map the world within space affect acts of literacy and movement? These are the questions that will frame our investigation of environmental writing practices. This course examines a number of environmental controversies through writing moments that center on justice, and what it means to make knowledge about “nature.” On the agenda are historical texts like Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring. Rather than reading Carson in isolation, we’ll read around her by engaging with the texts of her critics and considering the effect that this controversy has had on the development of environmental genres. The end goal is to contemplate the larger rhetorical ecologies in which environmental writing lives.  3 credits.
