“America Reads”, now entering its nineteenth year, is a program that allows college students to use their Federal Work-study to work with teachers in the Lansing -area community to help ensure that every child can read well and independently. “America Counts”, begun in 1999-2000, is a program designed to allow college students to use their FWS to work with teachers in community schools to improve mathematics achievement for lower and upper elementary, and middle school students. Tutors provide both remedial and accelerated math support in a variety of school settings. America Reads and America Counts tutors work with children and youth from diverse socio-economic, cultural, ethnic and racial backgrounds. Respect for diversity is an essential qualification. Prior tutoring experience is helpful, but not required. On-campus and in-school training will be provided for all aspects of “America Reads” and “America Counts” tutoring. All work-study eligible students receiving this letter are most welcome and encouraged to apply.

The Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement promotes active learning and outreach, focused on civic engagement, in which students serve with non-profit organizations, health and human service agencies, and educational, governmental and other publicly funded institutions to help meet needs and/or address issues that have been identified by the communities in which the students are involved. Structurally, service-learning and civic engagement at MSU support curricular and co-curricular service-learning, interdisciplinary and cross-unit collaborations related to service, and service-learning in pre-college programs. Over 300 local, national, and international community partners list more than 900 placement opportunities with the Center.
