    The Field Crops Team provides farmers with easily accessible, pertinent information to help make management decisions easier.   • Long-Term Ecological Research

    Description:

    The Kellogg Biological Station Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) Program studies the ecology of intensive field crop ecosystems and its environmental consequences as part of a National Network of LTER Sites established by the National Science Foundation in 1980. The KBS LTER joined the network in 1988. LTER research at KBS is designed to answer the broader question of how agronomic management can better utilize biological resources in cropping systems to control pests, provide nitrogen, and build soil fertility: In short, how to make agriculture more profitable and provide environmental benefits.

    Our main research areas include agronomy, microbial ecology, plant dynamics, insect dynamics, biogeochemistry, regionalization, ecosystem services, and biofuels. Our experimental systems range from field plots to landscapes. We study the ecology of major field crop ecosystems – annual crops such as corn, soybean, and wheat, perennial crops such as alfalfa, and biofuel crops such as switchgrass and poplars. We also study the natural, unmanaged ecosystems that occur in agricultural landscapes, such as forests and old fields.

  • Market Outlook and Price Forecasts for Grain and Livestock

    Description:

    This resource offers up-to-date commodity outlooks and probabalistic price forecasts for corn, wheat, soybeans, soybean meal, live cattle and feeder cattle, lean hogs, and milk. Also included are USDA balance sheets for corn, wheat, and soybeans. Price forecasts are updated weekly during the fall and spring semesters.

  • Michigan Organic Farming Exchange

    Description:

    The Michigan Organic Farming Exchange site offers agricultural producers and farmers with technical information and guidance to manage soil, grow organic crops and identify profitable markets. The exchange provides information to farmers and consumers interested in understanding organic production methods and suggests ways to successfully transition conventional production to organic-certified or not.

  • Montcalm Research Center (Lakeview, MI)

    Description:

    Michigan potato and dry bean producers are the main beneficiaries of the research conducted at the 57-acre Montcalm Research Center. The center also leases 40 additional acres for research and demonstration projects. Research activities include potato variety evaluation, cultural practices, fertility and weed, insect and disease control. Michigan ranks sixth in the nation in potato production value and is the No. 1 producer of chipping potatoes in the country. The center is adjacent to the Burt Cargill Potato Demonstration Storage facility which consists of two buildings that, combined, house nine 50,000-pound bulk potato storages. These storages allow researchers to study the commercial potential of new processing potato varieties as well as perform other post-harvest evaluations under simulated commercial evaluation.

  • MSU Diagnostics Services Laboratory

    Description:

    The MSU Diagnostic Services Lab assists a wide variety of people experiencing problems with plants and pests. There are many things that cause plant problems. This laboratory specializes in diagnosing problems caused by arthropods (insects, mites, ticks, etc.), pathogens (fungi, bacteria, viruses), and nematodes.

  • Project GREEEN Agricultural Research

    Description:

    Project GREEEN, Michigan’s plant agriculture initiative housed at Michigan State University, is a cooperative effort by plant-based commodity groups and businesses in cooperation with Michigan State University AgBioResearch, Michigan State University Extension and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to advance Michigan’s economy through plant-based agriculture.  Project GREEEN has a three-pronged mission:

    • Develop research and educational programs in response to industry needs
    • Ensure and improve food safety
    • Protect and preserve the quality of the environment
  • Rogers Reserve for Chestnut Production and Research (Jackson County, MI)

    Description:

    The Rogers Reserve was donated by Ernie and Mabel Rogers to Michigan State University in 1990. The Rogers were a prominent couple in the Jackson community, concerned with natural resources and food production. In 2002, at the bequest of the Rogers, an endowment was established to support the farm. Funds have been spent improving the farm and constructing Phase I and II building projects with the MSU Office of Land Management. Phase I, consisting of a steel pole building to house equipment, including a chestnut peeling line, was completed in 2005. Phase II was completed in April 2010 and consists of a wet lab, analytical lab, office and restrooms. The chestnut peeling line was purchased from Italy by the Midwest Nut Producers Council, supported by funding from the USDA Rural Development program. It is the only commercial chestnut peeling line in the western hemisphere.

  • Soil and Plant Nutrient Laboratory Services

    Description:

    The Soil and Plant Nutrient Laboratory (SPNL) offers a variety of analytical services on samples of soil, greenhouse growth media, composts, plant tissue, water and other materials related to the growing of plants (crops) received from commercial and part-time farmers, greenhouse operations, golf courses, homeowners, consultants, researchers, and others. The SPNL reaches out to the general public through educational displays and presentations at expositions, conferences and meetings of organizations. Numerous groups tour the SPNL facilities throughout the year.

  • South Campus Field Research Facilities

    The station’s 2,739 acres of farmland and forest are located south of Mt. Hope Road on MSU’s south campus.

    Description:

    There are 18 research facilities located on the south campus of MSU that allow AgBioResearch scientists to perform research in the areas of animal science and production, plant production and protection, environment and natural resources management, and renewable energy. State-of-the-art facilities and 2,739 acres of farmland and forest allow scientists to perform research close to campus and allow growers to view a number of demonstration plots in one visit to the university.

  • Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center (Benton Harbor, MI)

    Description:

    MSU’s Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center combines research projects and educational programs on fruits, vegetables, field crops, and woody ornamentals, as well as environmental quality issues. The mission of the Center is to enhance the economic viability of agriculture in the state of Michigan through the development and practical demonstration of technological advances in plant materials and cultural practices, as well as farm management. The Center keeps area producers and processors aware of solutions to the region’s agricultural problems.
