  • Agricultural Operations Certificate Program (Monroe, MI)

    All courses are delivered in Monroe, Michigan, on the campus of Monroe County Community College.

    Description:

    The Agricultural Operations program provides students with a solid background in plant and soil science, precision agriculture, water management, entomology, plant pathology and business management. This partnership allows students to earn a certificate from the MSU Institute of Agricultural Technology (IAT) while working toward an associate degree from Monroe County Community College. Full-time students will be able to complete the associate degree and certificate in just two years and financial aid is available to help with tuition expenses at both schools.

    Description:

    Michigan State University (MSU) and Muskegon Community College (MCC) are working together to offer specialized training programs for careers in some of Michigan’s highest demand industries. Students benefit from dual enrollment at both institutions with most courses delivered in Muskegon, Michigan, the home of MCC.

    This partnership allows students to earn a certificate from the MSU Institute of Agricultural Technology (IAT) while working toward an associates degree from MCC. The partnership between the two institutions benefits those who seek employment in agriculture, landscaping, and the fruit and vegetable industry.

    The 55-credit Agricultural Operations program provides students with a solid background in plant and soil science, precision agriculture, water management, entomology, plant pathology and business management. It exposes students to exciting opportunities available in the industry.

  • Dessert with Discussion: Invasives vs. Natives: Plant Species Race Against Climate Change (October 2017)

    Description:

    Dr. Jen Lau, MSU Associate Professor W. K. Kellogg Biological Station and Department of Plant Biology, will discuss:

    • Humans are changing the earth in many ways, including warming the planet and spreading invasive species.
    • These human-caused changes pose challenges to native species.  Or Native plants are challenged by invasive species and human-caused changes.
    • How do we tip the balance to favor and preserve native species?

    Enjoy coffee, tea and delicious locally sourced desserts provided by the KBS Conference Center. A cash bar featuring house wines and Michigan craft beer available prior to the event.

  • Dunbar Forest Experiment Station (Sault Ste. Marie, MI)

    Description:

    The 5,760-acre Dunbar Forest is the largest and second-oldest MSU off-campus facility. The forest hosts long-term genetics and silvicultural studies that have helped advance the science of forest management in Michigan and the Great Lakes region. For example, red pine is the most widely planted commercial forest species in Michigan, occupying more than 850,000 acres. Successful long-term management of this important resource is based, in large part, on research results from the Dunbar Forest.

  • Field Botany Course (August - September 2017)

    Description:

    Learn about Michigan’s diverse natural vegetation, emphasizing basic ecological principles of plant distribution, and influences on Michigan major vegetation types. You will also learn basic botanical taxonomy and ecology as we get a close-up look at plant parts and identify characteristics for 40-50 plants. You will also develop skills in using family features and a botanical key to identify plants.  The Field Botany course offers two-hour classes, once a week for six weeks. There will be two classroom sessions and four field sections.

  • Forest Biomass Innovation Center (Escanaba, MI)

    Description:

    The 1,745-acre MSU Forest Biomass Innovation Center in Escanaba is leading a number of initiatives to increase the sustainable use of wood in Michigan’s expanding bioeconomy. This wood will come from the surplus growing in the forests and from willow and poplar energy plantations on marginal farm land in the northern parts of the state. Work focuses on increasing yields, decreasing costs, reducing greenhouse gas and energy losses, retaining rural jobs, and improving supply chain efficiencies. Research at the center also focuses on forest genetics, silviculture and forested wetland management.

  • Herbarium

    Description:

    An herbarium is a natural history collection of preserved plants that documents the diversity of plants of the world. The MSU Herbarium represents a worldwide collection of all groups of plants as well as lichens, bryophytes, and fungi. Current holdings number over 530,000 specimens, with approximately 315,000 specimens of vascular plants, 145,000 lichenized fungi, 35,000 non-lichenized fungi, and 35,000 bryophyte specimens.

  • Midwest Invasive Species Information Network

    Description:

    The Midwest Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN) is a regional effort to develop and provide an early detection and rapid response (EDRR) resource for invasive species.  The goal of this regional resource is to assist both experts and citizen scientists in the detection and identification of invasive species in support of the successful management of invasive species.

    Description:

    The MSU Science Festival is an exploration of the science that touches our everyday lives. There are hands-on activities for the whole family, plus demonstrations, discussions, lectures, and tours on topics from astronomy to music to zoology.  MSU researchers and their students share the wonder of science in over 100 diverse offerings for young and old to engage, explore, and inspire.  Events are held at MSU in East Lansing, as well as in Detroit and around the state.

  • Plant Sciences Weekly Seminar Schedule (Spring and Fall)

    Description:

    MSU's Plant Research Lab (PRL) sponsors weekly seminars throughout the Spring and Fall semesters. Each Monday, a visiting scientist discusses research on a timely topic. While at the PRL, the visiting scientists also visit the PRL laboratories to speak with the students, postdocs, and faculty in an informal setting. This seminar series is administered by the Seminar Committee, composed of two faculty members, two postdoctoral research associates, and one graduate student.   • South Campus Field Research Facilities

    The station’s 2,739 acres of farmland and forest are located south of Mt. Hope Road on MSU’s south campus.

    Description:

    There are 18 research facilities located on the south campus of MSU that allow AgBioResearch scientists to perform research in the areas of animal science and production, plant production and protection, environment and natural resources management, and renewable energy. State-of-the-art facilities and 2,739 acres of farmland and forest allow scientists to perform research close to campus and allow growers to view a number of demonstration plots in one visit to the university.

  • W. K. Kellogg Experimental Forest (Augusta, MI)

    7060 N. 42nd Street, Augusta, MI 49012

    Description:

    Established on abandoned agricultural land, the 716-acre Kellogg Experimental Forest is known worldwide for research on tree breeding and genetics, planting techniques, and plantation establishment and management. Much of the research that developed the Spartan spruce, a hybrid that combines the color and drought resistance of a blue spruce and the softer needles and rapid growth rate of the white spruce, was done at the Kellogg Forest. The forest is open to the public for biking, hiking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing, and also has several interpretive trails.
