  • Applied Plant Science Dual Enrollment Certificates and Associate Degree Program (Northwestern Michigan)

    Location:

    Two or three plant science courses are offered each Fall and Spring semester in Traverse City and are held in the evening at the NMC University Center. Some classes are offered by two-way interactive television system that connects you to MSU East Lansing campus faculty.  Other classes are taught on-site by MSU faculty and additional highly qualified and experienced individuals.

    Description:

    This combined program enables students to complete an Associate’s degree and certificate program, without leaving northern Michigan.  Students can choose from a MSU Institute of Agricultural Technology Applied Plant Science Certificate with a specialization in  Landscape Horticulture or in Commercial Horticulture Operations, along with a NMC, NCMC, KCC, or WSCC Associate’s degree in Applied Science (AAS) or Science and Arts (ASA).

    Each student receives one-on-one help selecting a program of study, which includes an “on-the-job” internship opportunity. Taking advantage of world-acclaimed expertise and close-to-home convenience, the program provides professionals in the industry a chance to sharpen technical skills, keep informed of the latest research and regulatory information, and improve management practices. Graduates will enjoy a wide range of career and employment choices.

  • Applied Plant Science Program (Muskegon, MI)

    Location:

    Two or three plant science courses are offered each Fall and Spring semester in Benton Harbor and are held in the evening at Lake Michigan College. Some classes are offered by two-way interactive television system that connects you to MSU East Lansing campus faculty. Class meets in a special distance learning classroom which has interactive TV technology, there you can see, hear and talk to your instructor. Your instructor is able to answer your questions and speak to you directly. Other classes are taught, on-site by MSU faculty and additional highly qualified and experienced individuals. You may also connect to campus resources by computer and the Internet from home, work, and local libraries.

     

    Description:

    The Applied Plant Science program includes course work taught by faculty members from Lake Michigan College and Michigan State University. The degree and certificate programs contain specialty and general education course requirements which may vary some depending on area of study and community college associate degree requirements. Certificate options are available either in Viticulture or in the Applied Plant Science Program, with options in Commercial Horticulture Operations, Landscape Horticulture or Commercial Turfgrass Operations.

    The Southwest Michigan Applied Plant Science program offers this same type of specialized curriculum as the campus programs. It differs from the on-campus programs in some significant ways. First, it combines MSU courses, with community college courses. Student may simultaneously earn both an MSU Certificate and a community college Associate degree. Second, it brings MSU courses to you without the need move to East Lansing.

  • Dunbar Forest Experiment Station (Sault Ste. Marie, MI)

    Description:

    The 5,760-acre Dunbar Forest is the largest and second-oldest MSU off-campus facility. The forest hosts long-term genetics and silvicultural studies that have helped advance the science of forest management in Michigan and the Great Lakes region. For example, red pine is the most widely planted commercial forest species in Michigan, occupying more than 850,000 acres. Successful long-term management of this important resource is based, in large part, on research results from the Dunbar Forest.

  • Field Botany Course (August - September 2017)

    Description:

    Learn about Michigan’s diverse natural vegetation, emphasizing basic ecological principles of plant distribution, and influences on Michigan major vegetation types. You will also learn basic botanical taxonomy and ecology as we get a close-up look at plant parts and identify characteristics for 40-50 plants. You will also develop skills in using family features and a botanical key to identify plants.  The Field Botany course offers two-hour classes, once a week for six weeks. There will be two classroom sessions and four field sections.

  • Forest Biomass Innovation Center (Escanaba, MI)

    Description:

    The 1,745-acre MSU Forest Biomass Innovation Center in Escanaba is leading a number of initiatives to increase the sustainable use of wood in Michigan’s expanding bioeconomy. This wood will come from the surplus growing in the forests and from willow and poplar energy plantations on marginal farm land in the northern parts of the state. Work focuses on increasing yields, decreasing costs, reducing greenhouse gas and energy losses, retaining rural jobs, and improving supply chain efficiencies. Research at the center also focuses on forest genetics, silviculture and forested wetland management.

  • Herbarium

    Description:

    An herbarium is a natural history collection of preserved plants that documents the diversity of plants of the world. The MSU Herbarium represents a worldwide collection of all groups of plants as well as lichens, bryophytes, and fungi. Current holdings number over 530,000 specimens, with approximately 315,000 specimens of vascular plants, 145,000 lichenized fungi, 35,000 non-lichenized fungi, and 35,000 bryophyte specimens.

  • International Short Course: Marker-assisted Breeding (August 2017)

    Description:

    This course in Molecular Breeding will be designed not only to cover the molecular techniques available to a plant breeder for crop improvement but also to cover marker assisted selection with successful examples from around the world. In addition, this course will introduce the participants on how to develop international collaborations in plant breeding and approach funding opportunities nationally, regionally and internationally.

    Using a participatory approach, the course will foster linkages and provide opportunities for networking among participants to exchange their experiences and establish regional collaborations.

  • Landscape and Lawn Management Dual Enrollment Certificate and Associate Degree Program (Grand Rapids)

    Location:

    The program uses multiple course delivery methods. MSU offers two to three courses each fall and spring semester in the evening at locations in Grand Rapids. All classes are taught on-site by MSU faculty or highly qualified industry leaders. Other MSU courses will be taught via distance learning, an interactive television system that connects students and classmates to the best instructors possible.

    Description:

    The Landscape and Lawn Management Certificate combines horticulture courses with business courses and an industry related internship to fulfill the program. The combination of courses is delivered by the Institute of Agricultural Technology and Grand Rapids Community College which together fulfill the Certificate requirements. Students in the program are also able to earn an Associate’s Degree from GRCC by taking only a few more classes.

    This Certificate leads to employment in landscaping, turfgrass, and plant nursery industries. The required professional internship gives students direct applied experience in preparation of job placement or enhancing current skills.

  • Midwest Invasive Species Information Network

    Description:

    The Midwest Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN) is a regional effort to develop and provide an early detection and rapid response (EDRR) resource for invasive species.  The goal of this regional resource is to assist both experts and citizen scientists in the detection and identification of invasive species in support of the successful management of invasive species.

    Description:

    The MSU Science Festival is an exploration of the science that touches our everyday lives. There are hands-on activities for the whole family, plus demonstrations, discussions, lectures, and tours on topics from astronomy to music to zoology.  MSU researchers and their students share the wonder of science in over 100 diverse offerings for young and old to engage, explore, and inspire.  Events are held at MSU in East Lansing, as well as in Detroit and around the state.

  • Plant Sciences Weekly Seminar Schedule (Spring and Fall)

    Description:

    MSU's Plant Research Lab (PRL) sponsors weekly seminars throughout the Spring and Fall semesters. Each Monday, a visiting scientist discusses research on a timely topic. While at the PRL, the visiting scientists also visit the PRL laboratories to speak with the students, postdocs, and faculty in an informal setting. This seminar series is administered by the Seminar Committee, composed of two faculty members, two postdoctoral research associates, and one graduate student.   • Plant Systematics Summer Course (May - June 2017)

    Kellogg Biological Station, Hickory Corners, Michigan.

    Description:

    A field-oriented systematics course, emphasizing native flora identification and classification. Each day starts with a one and one-half hour lecture on systematics and plant family characteristics. The remainder of the day is spent in the field. Identifying habitats and the factors controlling plant distribution, understanding biodiversity and human effects and skill-building for continuing new species identification are emphasized. 3 credits. There are prerequisites.

  • South Campus Field Research Facilities

    The station’s 2,739 acres of farmland and forest are located south of Mt. Hope Road on MSU’s south campus.

    Description:

    There are 18 research facilities located on the south campus of MSU that allow AgBioResearch scientists to perform research in the areas of animal science and production, plant production and protection, environment and natural resources management, and renewable energy. State-of-the-art facilities and 2,739 acres of farmland and forest allow scientists to perform research close to campus and allow growers to view a number of demonstration plots in one visit to the university.

  • W. K. Kellogg Experimental Forest (Augusta, MI)

    Location:

    7060 N. 42nd Street, Augusta, MI 49012.

    Description:

    Established on abandoned agricultural land, the 716-acre Kellogg Experimental Forest is known worldwide for research on tree breeding and genetics, planting techniques, and plantation establishment and management. Much of the research that developed the Spartan spruce, a hybrid that combines the color and drought resistance of a blue spruce and the softer needles and rapid growth rate of the white spruce, was done at the Kellogg Forest. The forest is open to the public for biking, hiking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing, and also has several interpretive trails.
