    Description:

    In this online course, students will learn techniques for creating well-designed maps for a variety of output media. Maps can provide important visual explanations of complex geographic information. This course introduces students to topics essential to good map design, including graphic design principles, typography, and visual variables. Lab exercises provide multiple opportunities for hands-on experience with map-making and web design software programs.

    This 7-week course is eligible for Michigan State University Continuing Education Units (MSU CEUs), as well as Michigan Department of Education State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs).

    Description:

    In this online GIS course, students will explore the technical and theoretical issues in the design, implementation, and use of geographic information systems (GIS) for a variety of practical applications and research topics. Students will learn the structure of a GIS, the theoretical background for how spatial analysis is performed using GIS, where to obtain geographic data sets, and the many applications of GIS in diverse professional and academic fields. Lab exercises provide students with hands-on opportunities to develop proficiency with ArcGIS, the industry-standard GIS software, and to apply GIS analysis to a variety of real-world scenarios.

    This 7-week course is eligible for Michigan State University Continuing Education Units (MSU CEUs), as well as Michigan Department of Education State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs).

    Description:

    This two-day course demonstrates the complex capabilities of the ArcGIS software. Through conceptual overview and hands-on applications, participants will learn how to perform powerful queries and map displays. Participants will become familiar with the ArcGIS graphical user interface (GUI) and explore methods for creating, editing, displaying, querying, and analyzing geographic and tabular data in this software. Course textbook is included in the fee.

    Description:

    This online geography course is designed to introduce students to the nature of geographic information, as well as the tools and technologies that geospatial professionals use to access, manipulate, and display geographic information. It is a combined introduction to geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing (RS), global positioning systems (GPS), and cartography (the science and art of map-making), as well as topics such as geospatial ethics and crowd-sourcing geographic information. Students should emerge from this course with a greater understanding of the practical application of GIS and other geospatial technologies, and will be able to create maps using a variety of publicly available mapping programs. Introduction to Geospatial Technologies serves as a foundation for the three remaining courses in the Geospatial Tools and Technology Certificate.

    Description:

    The Professional Certificate in GIS (Geographic Information Science) aims to advance the geospatial tools & technology skill-set of professionals currently working in fields that use geospatial technologies. It is also an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to revamp their current career, earn continuing-education or teaching credits, or simply learn new and marketable skills.

    Our four professional-certificate courses in GIS qualify for both the State of Michigan SCECHs and Michigan State University CEUs. You can easily earn teaching credits (55 or 60, depending on the course) in seven weeks, while becoming proficient in the theory of geographic information science and the application of its many techniques.

    The certificate consists of four fully online courses that are each delivered in 7-week sessions. This means that a certificate can easily be earned in two semesters (if courses are taken one at a time) or faster (if courses are taken concurrently).

    Description:

    This online remote sensing course presents the technical and methodological skills needed to interpret various types of aerial images as a source of information in a variety of applications, including geography, forestry, urban planning, recreation management, crop and soil science, among many others. Lab exercises will utilize an extensive set of digital aerial images displaying a wide variety of environments (urban, rural, residential, agricultural, et cetera) where students can practice the interpretation skills discussed in the online lessons and apply them to decision-making across a variety of disciplines.
