    Exploring Africa is an educational web-based curriculum and resource site developed for use in a classroom setting. Materials developed for Exploring Africa fulfill social studies and humanities national- and state-level standards and benchmarks for global education and the study of Africa. Exploring Africa includes:

    • A five-unit (25-module) comprehensive interactive curriculum that focuses on Africa through the social sciences and humanities.
    • Separate teacher and student pages.
    • A current events page with a new feature story developed each month.
    • Printable resources.
    • Country fact sheets.
    • Links to African newspapers and radio stations.
    • Links to quality Africa-related websites.
  • Foreign Language Writing Resource Bibliography

    Description:

    MSU's Center for Language Education And Research (CLEAR) offers a bibliography of resources for the teaching of foreign language writing on their website. The target audience for this bibliography is foreign language teachers who are interested in expanding pedagogical techniques for teaching foreign language writing and researchers wanting to find empirical research on specific topics.

  • G. Robert Vincent Voice Library

    Description:

    The G. Robert Vincent Voice Library is a collection of primary source sound material, found mainly in speech, performance, interview, and lecture format. The collection, stored primarily on reels of magnetic recording tape, contains the voices of over 100,000 persons from all walks of life. Items represent, in most cases, a migration from other recording formats, off-air broadcasts, or Voice Library original recordings. New items are mastered digitally and a retrospective digital re-mastering of existing analog recordings is underway. About 15,000 digital sound files have been created. Most items held in the public domain are available online in mp3 format.

(Activities are not specific to Kent County.)

    Description:

    This fun, hands-on curriculum helps youth understand the connection between civics, the environment, and our community. The Junior Citizen Planner program develops participants' skills in becoming good citizens and responsible decision-makers, and will develop community pride. The primary subject areas covered in the program are:

    • Social Studies, Civics, and Community
    • Geography
    • Environmental Science and Land Use Planning
    • Land Use Technology (GIS, GPS)
  • Linking All Types of Teachers to International Cross-cultural Education (LATTICE)

    Description:

    MSU's College of Education, in conjunction with International Studies & Programs, developed the Linking All Types of Teachers to International Cross-cultural Education (LATTICE) program, an international educational partnership between teachers in six mid-Michigan school districts and international graduate students/scholars at Michigan State University. LATTICE concentrates on adult learning and promotes practical links to K-12 classrooms to connect schools to local and internatioal communities. The program stimulates discussion to change attitudes and beliefs about cultural differences and similarities. LATTICE members, representing 54 countries, meet for presentations, discussions, food, and music at monthly forums that advance greater understanding of issues of diversity. Topics range from personal issues such as religion and member's own personal experiences to global ones featuring members' culture, native food and crafts, and literature.

    Description:

    MSU Museum’s commitment to society as a land-grant university museum is met through education, exhibitions, research, and building and stewardship of collections that focus on Michigan and its relationship to the Great Lakes and the world beyond. The Museum showcases permanent exhibits such as Heritage Hall, Hall of Animal Diversity, Habitat Hall, and Hall of World Cultures, along with many new and changing exhibits. Additionally, the Museum is participating in events and programs that focus on children and may be of interest to K-12 teachers, including the Teacher Resource Program, the Dinosaur Dash and Hello Halloween. Group tours to the Museum, as well as Virtual Tours from the comfort of your own classroom, are also available.

  • Spartan Youth Programs Website

    Description:

    The Spartan Youth Programs Website is a catalog of the programs and activities MSU offers to preK through 12th graders on a variety of topics, including: agriculture; animal care; art, drama, and music; business; college preparation; computers; engineering; leadership skills; math and science; social studies; sports and fitness; and writing and language.

  • The New Centennial Review

    Description:

    MSU's College of Arts and Letters and University Press offer The New Centennial Review. This journal, issued three times a year, is devoted to comparative studies of the Americas. The journal publishes scholarly, theoretically-driven work, with an emphasis on the region's possible futures.
