    Description:

    These professional development workshops offer a range of opportunities for professionals who are interested in developing new skills, strengthening existing skills, and seeking opportunities to network with social workers and other human service and healthcare professionals. Social work continuing education contact hours (CECHs) are available by attending any of the programs unless otherwise noted.

  • Spartan Child Development Center (SCDC)

    730 Cresent Road, E. Lansing

    Description:

    The Spartan Child Development Center (SCDC) is equipped with heated sidewalks, a separate playground for toddlers, child-friendly windows in the infant rooms, heated floors in both infant and toddler rooms, safety surfacing in outdoor playrooms and in infant rooms, child-sized furniture, and hands-on gardening units for children to use. The SCDC, formerly called "Married Students Activity Day Care Center," has been a part of the MSU community since 1971. After 1980, it separated from the University and became Spartan Kid Care, Inc. Parents, both on and off campus, appreciate the exposure their children receive at the SCDC to art, science, music, drama, language development, and large and small motor play. Teachers are professionals, with education and training in child development and related fields.

  • Spartan Youth Programs Website

    Description:

    The Spartan Youth Programs Website is a catalog of the programs and activities MSU offers to preK through 12th graders on a variety of topics, including: agriculture; animal care; art, drama, and music; business; college preparation; computers; engineering; leadership skills; math and science; social studies; sports and fitness; and writing and language.

  • Supervision in Child and Family Services Certificate Series (Online)

    Description:

    The Supervision in Child and Family Services Certificate is designed to promote retention of child and family services workers by increasing the skill sets of current and aspiring task and program supervisors and agency leaders. Courses will provide information on how supervisors can create a positive culture for staff retention, as well as supervisory competencies, tools and methods of supervision and information on how to orient, support, and train new staff during their first six months on the job. This course includes a one hour recorded presentation, handouts and a required posttest. This course is a non-interactive, online course utilizing D2L (Desire2Learn). Courses include:

  • Supervisory Toolkit for Managing Secondary Trauma and Workplace Stress (Child Welfare Leadership Course) (April, May 2018)

    Description:

    Child welfare supervisors can have significant impact on reducing and mitigating the level of stress their workers experience. A number of strategies and tools have proven effective. This training will explore the application of a range of supervisory interventions and tools that promote resilience and retention in child welfare staff. Strategies for engaging workers, assessing and understanding specific worker stressors, intervening at the organizational, team, and individual worker levels will be disseminated. Supervisor self-assessment and reflection, key ingredients for assuring that these interventions are effective, will be a focus of discussion.

  • Supplimental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP-ED)

    Description:

    The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap-Ed) is a free nutrition education program to reduce hunger and food insecurity and promote healthy eating habits. MSU Extension SNAP-Ed nutrition instructors teach youth, teens, adults and seniors how to make health a priority through an instructional series. The goal of the SNAP-Ed program is to increase the likelihood that those eligible for SNAP benefits will establish healthy eating habits and increase their time spent involved in physical activity, while staying within their limited food budget.

  • The Real Work of Creating Families for Adolescent Boys With Trauma Histories and Criminal Justice Involvement (August 2018)

    Cole Williams will share his experiences as an African American single foster/adoptive parent who has raised male youth who have experienced trauma and the criminal justice system. Cole’s son will be in attendance, and together they will look at how labeling, mental health, trauma, and multiple-system involvement impacted the trajectory of their lives and their work as a father and son team. Join them to learn about the commitment, advocacy, and hard work that is involved in making a difference in the lives of youth who are often ill served by the child welfare system.

    Description:

    The MSUE - Tollgate Education Conference Center functions as a full service meeting facility ideal for the business and educational community.   • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (March 2018)

    Description:

    Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a components-based psychosocial treatment model that incorporates elements of cognitive-behavioral, attachment, humanistic, empowerment, and family therapy models. TF-CBT is an evidence-based therapy model that supports healing for children, adolescents, and families.

    This is a 2 day course that will prepare you to begin the practice of Trauma-Focused CBT.

  • Trauma-Informed Practice with Refugee Youth: Treatment (Part 2: Webinar) (February 2018)

  • Triple Threat: Teenagers, Trauma, and Talking (April 2018)

    In this workshop, you will discover and discuss the differences between teenager “trauma behaviors” and teenager “normal behaviors.” You will learn about pros and cons of different behavioral intervention methods. In addition, you will identify ways to talk to and connect with teens in order to build deeper relationships with them and be able to be a more effective professional in their life. You will have the opportunity to network and brainstorm permanency strategies for youth who have experienced trauma and are at risk of out-of-home placements.

  • Understanding the Needs of Adopted Children and Families (May 2018)

    Description:

    Experiences children and families have before, during, and after adoption impact how they approach treatment. Professionals who want to maximize their effectiveness with adoptive families need to have an understanding of the complexity of the adoption experience for children and families. This course will discuss the impact of the adoption process on children and families, common and lifelong issues that all adoptees and adoptive families face, and the trauma experience that adopted children and their families share. Trauma symptoms and the impact of trauma on the development of adopted children will be the focus as well as trauma-informed treatment strategies. In a case-driven experience, you will complete a trauma assessment and design trauma-informed interventions based on an adoptive family case study designed to present the unique needs and trauma issues that are common to adoptive families.

  • Use of Fairy Tales in Working with Children of Trauma (April 2018)

    Description:

    The Brothers Grimm recorded original folktales that included incest and abuse of children, resonant themes for traumatized children. Fairy tales speak directly to inner pressures of children’s psychological and emotional sense of self in ways that children unconsciously understand. Fairy tales embrace the serious inner struggles of traumatized children and offer creative solutions to those difficulties. This empowers children, offers them a more secure sense of self, body integrity, and confidence. Understanding the nature of children’s enjoyment and use of fairy tales gives an appreciation for the needs and coping strategies of children to negotiate painful experiences, embrace relationships and find meaning in life. When children are told fairy tales, they are given permission to explore the dark side of their lives and find creative resolutions to their intense anxieties and concerns. Anxieties and their derivatives are often core conflicts addressed in fairy tales. Fairy tales, then, provide children solutions in a reassuring cohesive structure and predictable happy endings not often found simply through play. We will visit fairy tales and utilize discussion to highlight these themes for traumatized children.

  • What Is Your ACE Score? Understanding the Impact of Adverse Childhood Experience (March 2018)

    Increasingly, we are beginning to understand the complex and prevalent effects of trauma on our population, in both children and adults. The examination of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) through the ACE Study is unique because it provides the potential to understand how multiple forms of childhood stressors can affect many important public health problems throughout an individual lifetime. ACEs can affect individuals, organizations, and communities across both public and private domains, in clinical, educational, and law enforcement settings. Understanding ACE effects can help us as professionals and individuals begin to work around a common goal of preventing the accumulation of ACEs and moderating their effects. In this workshop, you will learn about the ACE Study and the impact on oneself and the community. You will discuss the implications that exposure to trauma in childhood can have on your health. In addition, you will learn about the important connections between neurobiology, epigenetics, ACEs, and resilience.

  • Youth Sports Publications

    Description:

    MSU's Institute for the Study of Youth Sports in the Department of Kinesiology publishes a newsletter, Spotlight on Youth Sports, that is designed to inform parents, coaches, officials, participants, and administrators about developments on the youth sports scene. The Institute also publishes a collection of coaching handbooks for volunteer coaches, parents, and officials.
