  • Adaptive Leadership - Enhancing Individual and Team Performance (November 2017)

    Description:

    Research shows that there are seven critical roles that must be filled in all team contexts in order for the team to have long-term, sustained effectiveness. No one leader can fulfill all these roles but it is the leader’s responsibility to recognize his or her strengths and weaknesses in performing all the roles. Moreover, if there are roles that the leader cannot fulfill, it is his or her responsibility to either (a) personally adapt and develop the ability to perform the role or (b) make sure that the role is covered by some other member of the team.

    The skills learned in this seminar will help the attendee expand his or her leadership style beyond his or her current niche, providing long-term career survival and advancement.

  • Conflict, Collaboration and Consensus in Natural Resources (March - April 2017)

    Description:

    Do you work with natural resource-based groups or individuals who often find themselves in conflict situations? Michigan State University Extension offers an intensive program designed to help you gain confidence and competence in helping groups and communities productively address contentious natural resource issues. Participants will:

    • Gain conflict resolution skills related to listening, questioning, dealing with difficult behaviors, and facilitating dialogue

    To develop one’s critical thinking ability and maximize reasoning effectiveness, it is necessary to master the skill of ‘ingenious thinking’, which is used by successful innovators, scientists, strategists and Nobel Prize winners.  By enhancing your critical thinking ability, you are investing in your most important resource and the ultimate competitive advantage – your mind.

    •     How the brain’s predisposition for pattern-seeking, pattern-finding leads to faulty thinking
    •     How beliefs and preconceived explanations influence our observations and insights

    Description:

    This interactive program will provide new managers and supervisors with the broad set of skills they need to successfully transition into management.

    The experiential nature of the class will provide participants with multiple opportunities to practice using newly acquired skills such as assigning tasks, holding employees accountable, providing feedback and creating documentation, and enhancing performance.

    Participants will establish written goals and will receive a reminder of those goals in the mail 30 days after class. Participants are also welcome to follow up with the faculty through email, telephone calls, and text messages.

  • Facilitation Skills and Techniques Workshop

    Description:

    Facilitation Skills and Techniques (Facilitator Institute) focuses on the training of individuals who can effectively facilitate process improvement and problem solving efforts in public or private sector organizations. The five-day program represents an intensive period of training that provides substantive learning, interactive exercises to apply the principles, and the building of a toolkit of techniques useful in working with teams, task forces, and other groups.

    Description:

    The three-day Facilitative Leadership workshop helps build the capacity of groups or organizations to use the collective talents of its members to coordinate actions, strengthen relationships, and enable the group to meet its goals.  It is designed to build and strengthen the skills and personal confidence necessary to lead and facilitate productive meetings.  MSU Extension offers the program twice each year, in spring and fall. The goal of Facilitative Leadership is to provide participants with a practical hands-on experience using  group facilitation tools and techniques in order to work more effectively with business work teams and community organizations. During this all-inclusive retreat, participants will practice leadership strategies, using the tools, techniques and verbal skills necessary to lead group discussions, reach consensus, set outcome-based goals, and use flip charts and other recording tools.

  • Human Resources Executive Education

    Description:

    Human Resources Executive Education (HREE) provides continuing education programs for human resources, labor relations, and management professionals. It conducts open enrollment and on-site programs in every state and the District of Columbia. Seminars are led by instructors chosen for their professional knowledge, theoretical expertise and extensive practical experience. Seminars are usually limited to 30 participants to stimulate networking and a more personal learning environment. All programs can be adapted for in-house supervisory training and can be customized to an organization's specific needs. Custom course program topics include:
