  • ADA In the Workplace - Joint Management of Disability Programs

    Description:

    In the spirit of comprehensive coverage, the Americans with Disabilities Act is often ambiguous, making the opportunity for conflict within the workplace high. ADA in the Workplace - Joint Management of Disability Programs provides participants with a set of tools that enables them to anticipate and mediate conflicts before they become disputes. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides a mechanism for protecting qualified disabled individuals from discriminatory actions on the part of employers with 15 or more employees.

    Description:

    MSU's School of Hospitality Business and Club Managers Association of America offers Business Management Institute III. The one-week seminar teaches participants the use of technology in country clubs, accounting and financial controls, training procedures, quality leadership, team building, change management, marketing, conducting a board meeting, and leadership. Participants must register with the Club Managers Association of America to enroll in this course.

    Description:

  • Exploring and Designing Workplace Teams Workshop

    Description:

    MSU's Union Management Initiatives offers a wide range of open-enrollment workshops and site-specific interventions.  Exploring and Designing Workplace Teams assists labor and management participants in increasing the knowledge and skills they need to build a strong foundation for teams. Unionized organizations have a unique opportunity to improve organizational performance through the joint design, implementation, and oversight of workplace teams. With labor and management participating fully and equally in the process, the organization creates a base for achieving results greater than might be achieved through a unilateral approach.

  • Human Resources Executive Education

    Description:

    Human Resources Executive Education (HREE) provides continuing education programs for human resources, labor relations, and management professionals. It conducts open enrollment and on-site programs in every state and the District of Columbia. Seminars are led by instructors chosen for their professional knowledge, theoretical expertise and extensive practical experience. Seminars are usually limited to 30 participants to stimulate networking and a more personal learning environment. All programs can be adapted for in-house supervisory training and can be customized to an organization's specific needs. Custom course program topics include:

    • Core supervisory skills (e.g., employment law basics, retention, discipline and discharge, and change management);
    • Leadership skills;

  • Improving the Effectiveness of Joint Labor-Management Relationships Workshop

    Description:

    This two-day interactive workshop is designed to assist organizations in improving the functioning of their current labor-management relationship and, where desired, strengthen the foundation on which a range of joint labor-management initiatives might be built. The program engages labor and management in a process in which they assess their readiness and capability to work more effectively together, construct a vision of their future relationship that they can each commit to, and identify the barriers that they must address to improve the effectiveness of their relationship.

    Description:

    The importance of the job analysis process cannot be overstated – yet many human resources professionals have never had the hands-on, in-depth training needed to conduct accurate job analyses.

    This interactive workshop will prepare you to conduct job analyses that provide needed information to enhance performance and minimize risk. Once you’ve mastered the data collection and analysis process, you’re ready to explore how to enhance work processes through job design and re-design. You will learn about the different approaches to job design, when each is most appropriate, and how to apply them to the jobs in your organization.

    Finally, you will be able to write meaningful job descriptions that inform the recruiting, interviewing and selection of employees; guide employees as they perform their work, and provide managers with the information they need to lead high-performance work teams.

    Description:

    The Weekend MBA’s rigorous curriculum is designed to sharpen your business expertise and give you a competitive edge in your career. Throughout these dynamic executive MBA courses, you’ll obtain the essential business knowledge, real-world skills and insights you need to excel in the workplace and contribute to your company’s bottom line. 

    The 45-credit-hour Master of Business Administration (MBA) includes nearly 30 executive MBA courses. Most Weekend MBA courses are 1.5 credit hours and consist of four compressed four-hour sessions that leverage technology to get the most out of in-class time. The program begins with a 7-day intensive academic residency in East Lansing in late summer.

    Description:

    The Nursing Home Administration Program offers 144 clock-hours of instruction in four units, each involving Saturday sessions. To complete the program, participants must attend 128 clock hours (90%) and pass a comprehensive final exam for each unit.

    •     Unit 1 covers leadership, labor and management contracts, affirmative action, wages, legal    issues, HIPPA
    •     Unit 2 covers aging process, gerontology and geriatric infection control, nutrition, pharmacy.
    •     Unit 3 covers General and States Rules/Regulations for Dietary Services in Long Term Care Facilities, medicare, fire safety.
    •     Unit 4 covers accounting and budget, recreational, medicaid, and insurance.
  • Organizational Climate Assessment Workshop

    Description:

    Organizational Climate Assessment is a joint labor-management employee opinion survey and problem-solving process. Employee opinions are a barometer of an organization's health and can be used to identify issues that can drain morale, productivity, quality, and competitiveness. Survey results can be used in a structured problem-solving process to foster constructive organizational change. PIERS facilitates a structured process to identify and resolve workplace issues and to implement changes to improve organizational functioning. PIERS staff work with a steering committee comprised of labor and management leadership within the organization to design a survey and problem-solving process tailored to the specific needs of the organization and the workforce.

    Description:

    This comprehensive course for the railway industry (operating companies, suppliers and shippers) is designed for employees that show potential for professional growth and increased management capabilities to middle and upper management levels.  Content is predominantly focused on the needs of managers rather than operators or engineers.  The course was developed and evaluated by MSU Railway Management Program staff, working closely with Class I and Class II railroad education and training directors, as well as the AAR, ASL&RRA, and FRA decision makers, and other transportation industry leaders.  Content is regularly updated to include topical items impacting the railway industry.  The program consists of four weeks’ content that covers the breadth of today’s railway industry.  Lecture-style presentations, from distinguished MSU professors and recognized industry subject matter experts, are balanced with field visits to rail and associated sites to help put the conceptual and classroom sessions into practice.
