    Description:

    Designed by Michigan State University Extension, Be SAFE is a bullying prevention and education program that focuses on working with youth and adults involved in out-of-school settings, such as afterschool programs, 4-H clubs, Boys and Girls Clubs, Scouts and faith-based groups. Be SAFE includes a core curriculum of engaging learning activities focused on fostering environments that are physically and emotionally safe. The curriculum explores 10 focus areas, in addition to support material that provides the options for more intensive learning in each of the areas.

  • College Ambition Program (CAP)

    Description:

    Michigan State University researchers are working in partnership with two mid-Michigan high schools to develop an effective school-wide model for preparing students for careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) areas. The College Ambition Program (CAP) focuses on helping students gain interest and realistic expectations about the types of education and experiences needed to pursue technical occupations. 

    CAP is a research study funded by the National Science Foundation and the Michigan Department of Education designed to promote a college-going culture within high schools. The CAP program provides support and resources to students and high schools through a variety of different avenues:

    • Course Counseling and Advising
    • Tutoring and Mentoring
    • Financial Aid Planning
    • College Visits
  • D.A.R.E. Michigan Training Center

    Description:

    MSU's School of Criminal Justice heads up the D.A.R.E. Michigan Training Center, which serves as a resource for police officers to bring a clear, comprehensive, and consistent K-12 D.A.R.E. message to kids in Michigan's classrooms to enhance children's development of healthy positive behaviors. Goals of the Center include:

    • Communicating the D.A.R.E. message through elementary, junior high, and senior high curricula;
    • Establishing statewide awareness of the D.A.R.E. program and how it can assist the fight against drugs and violence in schools and communities;
    • Serving as an information resource for the accumulation, interpretation, and dissemination of the D.A.R.E message; and
    • Offering the best training and technical assistance to provide schools and communities with quality D.A.R.E. police officers.

    The Center is also involved in the evaluation of the New D.A.R.E Program curricula, which will be administered to middle school and high schools in six cities across the country.

  • Demmer Shooting Sports Education and Training Center

    Description:

    This 24,000-square-foot, multipurpose facility supports NCAA shooting programs and team sports, the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP), and hunter safety and 4-H youth programs. It also houses MSU club shooting sports -- including small-bore, air rifle and archery -- and academic programs in shooting sports, law enforcement and related curricula. It accommodates DNR conservation officer and MSU police officer certification training.

  • Ending Zero Tolerance: The Pipeline to Student Success (February 2018)

    Description:

    Over the past 25 years, the nature and culture of discipline in schools has changed significantly. Disciplinary policy is much more formal, with broad-based punishments affecting many students. Instead of looking at student behavior individually, taking into account circumstances of an event, the students involved, and the safety implications for the school, many have chosen “zero tolerance” policies that limit the ability to look at situations on a case-by-case basis and according to individual needs. “Zero tolerance” policy adoption has led to increased involvement of law enforcement, suspension, and expulsion rather than strategies for helping students succeed(Center on Youth Justice, 2013). In this workshop, you will explore the history and impacts of the zero tolerance policies in K-12 in Michigan, including prevention programs, interventions, and the implications of the new bill, HB 5618, adopted in 2017.

  • Engineering Design Day (December 2017)

    Description:

    At the end of each semester, the MSU College of Engineering celebrates the achievements of its students by hosting Design Day, where student teams exhibit their design projects and compete for awards. Design projects are pervasive throughout the engineering curriculum, and all ten of the MSU engineering academic programs are represented at Design Day, including freshmen through senior level classes.

  • Ingham County Adolescent Project (MSUAP)

    The program takes place in the youth family's home and neighborhood.

    Description:

    The Michigan State University Adolescent Project (in collaboration with Ingham County Circuit Court) has provided quality advocacy services to youth in Ingham County since 1976. Michigan State University trains undergraduate students as advocates to provide a strength-based intervention to youth who are referred by the Ingham County Circuit Court. The primary goal of MSUAP is to help youth avoid future involvement with the juvenile justice system. Advocates design intervention programs tailored to each youth's strengths, skills/abilities and unmet needs. The goals are accomplished by providing the youth with an oppurtunity to gain access to community resources, partake in civic engagement, etc.

  • Intergenerational Trauma and Our Work with Birth Parents: Understanding the Bridge to Success! (Online, On-demand Course)

    Description:

    The reality for many of our families is that generation after generation, children are exposed to interpersonal trauma in the home/family setting. Understanding how patterns of intergenerational trauma occur, how this affects parenting and life management, as well as how best to interpret our parents’ behavior to then engage with them and help them create safety and stability for their children is critical to their success and relationship with their child(ren). This online course will begin by discussing the need for screening for adult trauma exposure.

  • Michigan Pre-College and Youth Outreach Conference (November 2017)

    Description:

    Postsecondary education remains the best way for civic actors to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in our evolving global landscape. Launched in 2009, the Big Goal sought to spur a college attainment rate of 60% in America by 2025. Although modest progress has been made, the US continues to lag behind other industrialized countries and the majority of college graduates are from privileged backgrounds. While 70% of jobs in Michigan now require training beyond high school, the state lags behind the nation’s average for college attainment and fewer than a quarter of the state’s high school graduates are college-ready. We must do better.
    At the Michigan Pre-College and Youth Outreach Conference, we will examine challenges to postsecondary attainment and explore opportunities to address them. Increasing access to postsecondary opportunities for low-income, first-generation and underrepresented college students will benefit the state and our nation. Scholars, researchers and practitioners will demonstrate the impact of promising approaches to inform, engage and inspire Michigan’s youth to pursue postsecondary education. Together, we can address The Urgency of College Access.

  • Psychological Clinic Therapy and Assessment Services

    Description:

    The MSU Psychological Clinic is staffed by clinicians enrolled in the MSU Clinical Psychology doctoral program and by some MSU Clinical Psychology faculty. All clinicians are individually supervised by experienced Ph.D. psychologists from the University faculty and the Greater Lansing community. The Clinic provides a wide range of services to the general public. Fee for services at the Clinic is set on an income-adjusted basis. Services include:

    MSU's Institute for the Study of Youth Sports in the College of Education researches the benefits and detriments of participation in youth sports. It produces educational materials and provides educational programs for parents, coaches, officials, and administrators.

  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (March 2018)

    Description:

    Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a components-based psychosocial treatment model that incorporates elements of cognitive-behavioral, attachment, humanistic, empowerment, and family therapy models. TF-CBT is an evidence-based therapy model that supports healing for children, adolescents, and families.

    This is a 2 day course that will prepare you to begin the practice of Trauma-Focused CBT.

  • Trauma-Informed Practice with Refugee Youth: Treatment (Part 2: Webinar) (February 2018)
