Northwestern Michigan College, Traverse City, MI
Michigan State University (MSU) and Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) have partnered to offer specialized training programs for careers in some of Michigan’s highest demand industries. Students will benefit from dual enrollment at both institutions with all courses delivered in Traverse City, Michigan, the home of NMC.
This partnership allows students to earn a certificate from the MSU Institute of Agricultural Technology (IAT) while working toward an associate’s degree from NMC. The partnership between the two institutions benefits those who seek employment in agriculture, landscaping, and the grape and wine industry.
The 48-credit Fruit and Vegetable Crop Management program provides students an opportunity to apply practical knowledge and training on the selection, use, and management of fruit and vegetable crops. The program combines classroom instruction and theory with practical experience gained through field laboratories and a professional internship. Graduates of the program are prepared for careers in the fruit and vegetable industry.

This 100-acre center sits in the five-county northwestern region that produces almost half of the U.S. supply of tart cherries and is responsible for 83 percent of sweet cherry production in Michigan. Founded through the efforts of the northwestern Michigan area fruit industry, the center is the premier research site for integrated pest management, horticultural production and handling, value-added processing, marketing and farm financial management practices for wine grapes, apples, plums, sweet and tart cherries, and hops. In addition to creating and expanding knowledge through leading-edge research on cherries and other fruits, the center disseminates state-of-the-art information to the Michigan fruit industry and the public.

Both days of this conference will offer a variety of topics relating to research and information on tart cherries, sweet cherries, apples, wine grapes, berry crops and saskatoons, addressing both production and marketing. Wednesday’s general sessions will open with the annual meeting of the Cherry Marketing Institute, followed by their luncheon, which is free to cherry growers if they pre-register with Cherry Marketing Institute by phone 517-669-4264 or by email at email@example.com.
The Fruit Industry Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, January 16, The Cherry Marketing Institute annual meeting and luncheon will be on Wednesday, January 17. Wednesday’s luncheon is free to cherry growers if they pre-register with Cherry Marketing Institute (more information below about registering). The exhibit hall will be open during the show to feature vendors of orchard and vineyard equipment and supplies, commodity organizations and other exhibitors.

Viticulture is a term used that refers to grape production and vineyard management. In response to an industry need for professionals with regional grape industry knowledge, the MSU Institute of Agricultural Technology has partnered with Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac, Michigan and Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Michigan to offer a Viticulture Certificate program. Students in the program will also take online courses from the Viticulture and Enology Science and Technology Alliance (VESTA). This combined program will enable students to complete a Viticulture Certificate from the Institute of Agricultural Technology while working towards an Associate’s degree from SMC.
The Viticulture Certificate program provides students with a solid background in plant science along with specific expertise and skills needed for careers in the grape industry. Students enrolled in the program will take courses related to plants, soils, pests, plant disease, pruning techniques, and vineyard management.
