  • Artisan Hands-On Basic Cheese Making Workshop (June 2017)

    Description:

    Participants will learn about milk quality, ingredients, processes for making a variety of cheeses, techniques and requirements for aging cheese and planning to establish a farmstead or artisan cheese business. The heart of the workshop is the hands-on opportunity for participants to make a number of cheeses, that may include fresh lactic, Italian, Alpine, Dutch and American varieties from goat and cow milk. A cheese tasting, featuring locally produced cheeses, takes place Tuesday evening.

  • Dairy Days and Annual Michigan Dairy Expo (July 2017)

    Description:

    During Michigan Youth Dairy Days, youth will compete for premiums, ribbons and scholarships in various competitions, including dairy quiz bowls, dairy management contests, dairy cattle judging contests, and the Dairy Days youth show. 

    Michigan Dairy Expo is a week-long event that combines youth activities and contests conducted during Youth Dairy Days with purebred dairy breed association youth and open show events. The mission of Michigan Dairy Expo is to encourage and promote youth involvement in dairy activities, showcase the Michigan dairy industry, and provide continuing education opportunities for the dairy industry in Michigan and neighboring states.

  • Dairy Food Processing Two-Day Short Courses

    Description:

    MSU's Dairy Foods Complexhouses research and teaching laboratories as well as a small, state of the art process facility for milk and dairy foods. The faculty and staff of the Dairy Foods Complex are regularly involved as invited speakers or writers for educational programs and publications targeted to the consumer. Visitors to the observation deck of the complex may watch a self-guided multimedia presentation explaining the technology behind the processing of fluid milk, ice cream and cheese. The following two-day short courses are offered:

    • Pasteurizer Operators
    • Clean-in-Place (CIP)
  • Dairy Management Certificate Program

    Description:

    The Dairy Management Certificate Program has been developed to meet the specialized needs of the herd manager and commercial dairy farmer. This technical training program consists of two 15-week semesters and one 9-week semester on campus for a total of 48 credits. Programs of study are tailored to the individual's educational goals. Areas of study include dairy herd management, nutrition, artificial insemination, crops, and farm management. A certificate is granted at the completion of the program requirements.

  • International Short Course: Best Practices in Dairy Production (August 2017)

    Description:

    Among developing countries, there is steady increase in the demand for milk and milk products due to favorable changes in income levels and living standards. Because of the perishable nature of milk, this increased demand creates an opportunity for local production in smallholder operations, or expanding operations within local economies. In order to take maximum advantage of this opportunity, knowledgeable individuals are needed in both technology transfer and policy making positions. It is toward these individuals that this training program is aimed. Training addresses animal health and production, reproduction, milk processing, food safety regulations both locally and internationally, animal welfare issues, and environmental concerns. The aim is toward the transfer of technology that is applicable under the local conditions of the participants. Consideration is given to both very small family farms and expanding production operations within the agricultural framework of developing economies. Moreover, as a result of enhanced communication and transportation technologies, access to global markets for the dairy products is getting much easier. However, due to the ever-changing international and local laws and regulations, food safety issues, animal welfare issues and stricter import/export controls, it is becoming more difficult for developing economies to compete in this global market. This program also addresses issues and opportunities in international dairy marketing relevant to developing economies in taking advantage of those markets, when favorable conditions exist.

  • Milk and Grain Marketing Series (2016 - 2017)

    Description:

    Agriculture markets are more volatile than ever. For most farms, profits are largely determined by how well you market your production. Now more than ever your farm’s future success depends on your ability to understand the  markets and use the basic marketing tools.  Fred Hinkley, retired MSU Extension Educator and Marketing Specialist will provide insight and outlook on the milk and grain markets, and suggest strategies to minimize financial risk.

  • MSU Training Center for Dairy Professionals

    Description:

    The MSU Training Center for Dairy Professionals provides specialized training, facilities, and demonstration materials for veterinary students, veterinarians, and other professionals working in the dairy industry, as well as an infrastructure for clinical research in the health management of dairy cows. The Center, located at Green Meadow Farms in Elsie, Michigan, makes use of the Farm's large dairy herd, modern facilities, and progressive management techniques, as well as the College's faculty and facilities to provide a cutting-edge, mutidisciplinary approach to dairy management.

  • Pasture Dairy Center Open House at the Kellogg Biological Station (June 2017)

    Description:

    The W.K. Kellogg Farm is celebrating 90 years of farming! The Farm was deeded to MSU by W.K. Kellogg with the intention that it would “operate under the most modern system of farm management” We will celebrate farming technology by showcasing the most modern tractor of each decade from steam engines to computer systems, robots and drones. Celebrate farming by marveling at changing technologies, taking a wagon ride and learn about Michigan’s agricultural landscapes while enjoying MSU Dairy Store ice cream.

    Wagon tours depart hourly at 4:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. 

  • Pasture Dairy Tours

    Location:

    Kellogg Biological Station Dairy Center, 10461 N. 40th Street, Hickory Corners, MI, 49060.

    Description:

    Guided tours are available for agricultural professionals, farmers, and educators. Tours are 45 to 60 minutes long and are tailored to the group’s interests. Tours need to be scheduled at least one month prior to the desired tour date.

  • Pasture-Based Cheese Open House at the Kellogg Biological Station (August 2017)

    Location:

    Kellogg Farm & Dairy Center, 10461 N. 40th Street, Hickory Corners, MI 49060.  Enter to park on N. 39th St., one block west of the intersection at N. 40th St. and East B Ave.

    Description:

    The W.K. Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) will host a pasture-based cheese open house. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the cheese-making process and sample KBS dairy’s pasture-based cheese along with other cheeses from the MSU Dairy Store.
