  • Accident Investigation Training Courses

    Description:

    These courses cover such topics as accident photography, perspective grid mapping of evidence, technical accident investigation, accident reconstruction, computer-assisted traffic accident reconstruction, and other topics. Modified versions of the above training programs are available for insurance investigation, fleet safety personnel, traffic engineers, and attorneys. Training is also available for police officers and civilians in motorcycle operation. For police officers, a 10-day certified skill course is available, along with a three-day recertification and a two-day advanced course. A four-day basic and advanced course is also available for non-police personnel. All of the courses identified above are offered on-campus and other locations throughout the State of Michigan.

  • Ambient and Elevated Temperature Creep and Fatigue Testing Facility

    Description:

    Within the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, there are 6 creep frames and one state-of-the-art thermomechanical fatigue testing machine capable of performing experiments at temperatures up to 1200 C and loads up to 10kN in vacuum (10-8 torr), inert gas, or air environments. In addition there is metallographic equipment for preparing samples for testing as well as for microscopic examination. The facilities are available to researchers from across campus and from outside the MSU community.

  • Center for Highway Pavement Preservation

    Description:

    The mission of CHPP is aimed at providing a new platform for accelerating innovation in highway pavement preservation. The center will assist in meeting the increasing demand for highway pavement preservation research and will further the goal of increasing the reliability and performance of the nation’s highways.

    The establishment of the proposed Center will complement the efforts currently undertaken by the NCPP to conduct outreach and technology transfer, especially in transferring research and educational advances in highway pavement preservation to the broad transportation community. The Center will use the links established by the NCPP with a variety of state and local highway transportation agencies and private companies to accomplish its outreach mission. Contacts with the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) in Michigan (run by Michigan Technological University) and other LTAPs will be leveraged to reach local transportation agencies.

  • Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability

    Description:

    The mission of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability is to develop and maintain a center of excellence that integrates ecology with socioeconomics, demography, and other disciplines for ecological sustainability from local, national, to global scales. The objectives include: conducting cutting-edge research on emerging issues related to ecological sustainability; training new generations of leading scholars for interdisciplinary research; and disseminating research findings across the globe.

    Description:

    The 14th Annual ChEMS Research Forum will showcase Departmental research advances in the areas of:

    * Energy and Sustainability
    * Nanotechnology and Materials
    * Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering

    The one-day program will feature two invited plenary speakers, oral presentations from faculty and students, and an extended poster session describing the latest department research results.  Registration, lunch, and refreshments are complimentary.

  • Composite Materials and Structures Center

    Description:

    The Composite Materials and Structures Center has provided more than 70 companies with technical assistance through research, testing, and analysis. The Center is a multidisciplinary research facility that utilizes the expertise of MSU's engineering faculty, as well as faculty members from other colleges on campus to support the Center's three major efforts: research on composite materials, processing, and design; support of graduate and undergraduate education in the science and engineering of composites; and transfer of composites technology to industry through seminars, short courses, and cooperative research.

  • Electrical Apprenticeship Online Program

    Description:

    The Online Electrical Apprenticeship program is a four year program registered with the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship and Training. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded a certificate of completion by Michigan State University.

    This program provides the Related Technical Instruction (RTI) required by the State of Michigan through the revisions of implementation Public Act 217 of 1954, Rule 338.88e. It gives the apprentice the necessary theoretical and technical knowledge needed to become a successful journey person. It also gives additional practice of job-related skills and knowledge. The USDOL standards require that a minimum of 144 hours per year of apprenticeship training is to be provided to each trainee.

  • Electrical Technology Apprenticeship Training Certificate Program

    Description:

    This training program covers commercial, farm, residential, and light industrial wiring. Students study the latest National Electrical Code, electrical fundamentals and solid state electronic applications in agriculture, housing, and industry. Advanced technical training is important for a successful career as an electrician in agriculture and industry. Training includes residential, commercial, farm and industrial wiring with an emphasis on control system design, motor operation and application, solid state electronics, personal computer operations, and lighting design. A certificate is granted upon completion of the program requirements.

  • Energy and Automotive Research Laboratory (EARL)

    Description:

    The world-class Energy and Automotive Research Laboratories, a 30,000- square-foot complex, houses the University's research on automobile engine efficiency, alternative energy, and emission reduction. The facility contains two engine test cells, a powertrain lab, control rooms, fuel rooms, faculty and graduate student offices, and a conference room.

    Description:

    At the end of each semester, the MSU College of Engineering celebrates the achievements of its students by hosting Design Day, where student teams exhibit their design projects and compete for awards. Design projects are pervasive throughout the engineering curriculum, and all ten of the MSU engineering academic programs are represented at Design Day, including freshmen through senior level classes.

  • Food Packaging Basics Workshop (November 2017)

    Description:

    This workshop will offer full insight in all aspects of food packaging including function, materials, systems and processes, shelf life estimation, active packaging, modified atmosphere packaging, distribution, food security and more!  You will leave this course better prepared to implement functional design elements and sustainability practices to your company’s packaging and related operations.

  • Foundations in Chemical Engineering (Online Courses and Bridging Program)

    Description:

    The Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science offers Foundations in Chemical Engineering online courses and a bridging program.  Two courses are offered:

    • CHE 804, Foundations in Chemical Engineering I
    • CHE 805, Foundations in Chemical Engineering II

    The courses cover the key concepts from the chemical engineering undergraduate curriculum, including fundamentals of material and energy balances, thermodynamics, chemical reaction engineering, fluid flow and heat transfer, and mass transfer and separations. The courses can be used in either of two ways:

    • Taken individually, these courses are designed for scientists and engineers from disciplines other than chemical engineering who want to pursue graduate degrees in the latter field or who need to incorporate techniques and information from that field into their career. Because of its cross-disciplinary characteristics, chemical engineering offers exciting job opportunities for those who combine preparation in that field with a background in other fields of science and engineering. Environmental engineers, chemists, biochemists, mechanical engineers, agricultural engineers, and food scientists are some of the professionals who have taken these courses to enhance their own technical backgrounds. Satisfactory performance in ChE804/ChE805 is recognized with a Certificate of Completion in Foundations of Chemical Engineering for each course.
    • The courses also provide a Bridging Program into a chemical engineering M.S. or PhD. degree program for students who have a non-chemical engineering B.S. degree. The courses provide sufficient background to prepare students to enter a graduate chemical engineering degree program. Participants are expected to have completed coursework in calculus, physics, physical chemistry, and organic chemistry.

    These courses are used by MSU, and other chemical engineering departments as the core of a bridging program. Contact the graduate student recruiter at the school of your choice to discuss plans to use the MSU bridging program.

  • From Lab Bench to Plant Workshop (May 2017)

    Description:

    The MSU Bioeconomy Institute in Holland, Michigan, hosts a week-long, hands-on, chemical process scale-up workshop. The workshop will familiarize participants with the transitional issues encountered in moving a chemical process from the laboratory bench to a chemical plant. The workshop is available for credit (4 hours) or as non-credit.

    Description:

    The Great Lakes Echo news portal is a daily digest of environmental stories that appear in daily newspapers, as well as original reporting by MSU's Knight Center students and MSU's Capital News Service students. One-sentence summaries of each story are linked to the full versions. Subscribers can receive the digest by e-mail or RSS feed.

  • Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP)

    Description:

    The Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) is an innovative, proactive, and voluntary program that helps farms of all sizes and all commodities voluntarily prevent or minimize agricultural pollution risks.  This program is designed to reduce farmers’ legal and environmental risks through a three-phase process: 1) education; 2) farm-specific risk assessment; and 3) on-farm verification that ensures the farmer has implemented environmentally sound practices. The program’s three systems — Farmstead ,Cropping and Livestock — each examine different aspects of the farm. After becoming MAEAP verified, a farm can display a MAEAP sign signifying that MAEAP partners recognize the farm is environmentally assured.

  • Michigan Uniform Energy Code Training and Implementation Program

    Description:

    The Michigan Uniform Energy Code Training and Implementation Program was created by the School of Planning, Design & Construction at Michigan State University.  The curriculum is designed to assist home builders, architects, engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, and government officials in implementing and enforcing the energy code in the state of Michigan.  The purpose of this program is to increase understanding, improve compliance, reduce administrative time and costs, and to improve customer relationships among these groups.  The training programs are approved for Public Act 54 continuing education credits for building officials by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs through the Michigan Bureau of Construction Codes.  Over 5,000 attendees and almost all State of Michigan Building Officials have received training through this program.

    The Mid-Michigan Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is a sustainability toolkit designed for planners, developers, community leaders, and the general public concerning the planning of future development in the Tri-County Area and how it impacts our health.  Specifically, it uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) programs to help inform users why or why not a particular development should be built in a specific location.

  • MSU Libraries

    Description:

    The MSU Libraries collections include more than 4 million volumes, 28,000 serial subscriptions (in print and electronic form), 5 million items in microfilm and microfiche, 200,000 maps and 40,000 sound recordings. The Libraries include extensive holdings in history, the social sciences, languages and literature, area studies, medicine, agriculture, and general sciences as well as several specialized, interest-specific collections.

  • MSU Science Festival (April 2017)

    Description:

    The MSU Science Festival is an exploration of the science that touches our everyday lives. There are hands-on activities for the whole family, plus demonstrations, discussions, lectures, and tours on topics from astronomy to music to zoology.  MSU researchers and their students share the wonder of science in over 100 diverse offerings for young and old to engage, explore, and inspire.  Events are held at MSU in East Lansing, as well as in Detroit and around the state.
