  • Ambient and Elevated Temperature Creep and Fatigue Testing Facility

    Description:

    Within the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, there are 6 creep frames and one state-of-the-art thermomechanical fatigue testing machine capable of performing experiments at temperatures up to 1200 C and loads up to 10kN in vacuum (10-8 torr), inert gas, or air environments. In addition there is metallographic equipment for preparing samples for testing as well as for microscopic examination. The facilities are available to researchers from across campus and from outside the MSU community.

  • Center for Highway Pavement Preservation

    Description:

    The mission of CHPP is aimed at providing a new platform for accelerating innovation in highway pavement preservation. The center will assist in meeting the increasing demand for highway pavement preservation research and will further the goal of increasing the reliability and performance of the nation’s highways.

    The establishment of the proposed Center will complement the efforts currently undertaken by the NCPP to conduct outreach and technology transfer, especially in transferring research and educational advances in highway pavement preservation to the broad transportation community. The Center will use the links established by the NCPP with a variety of state and local highway transportation agencies and private companies to accomplish its outreach mission. Contacts with the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) in Michigan (run by Michigan Technological University) and other LTAPs will be leveraged to reach local transportation agencies.

  • Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability

    Description:

    The mission of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability is to develop and maintain a center of excellence that integrates ecology with socioeconomics, demography, and other disciplines for ecological sustainability from local, national, to global scales. The objectives include: conducting cutting-edge research on emerging issues related to ecological sustainability; training new generations of leading scholars for interdisciplinary research; and disseminating research findings across the globe.

  • Composite Materials and Structures Center

    Description:

    The Composite Materials and Structures Center has provided more than 70 companies with technical assistance through research, testing, and analysis. The Center is a multidisciplinary research facility that utilizes the expertise of MSU's engineering faculty, as well as faculty members from other colleges on campus to support the Center's three major efforts: research on composite materials, processing, and design; support of graduate and undergraduate education in the science and engineering of composites; and transfer of composites technology to industry through seminars, short courses, and cooperative research.

  • Energy and Automotive Research Laboratory (EARL)

    Description:

    The world-class Energy and Automotive Research Laboratories, a 30,000- square-foot complex, houses the University's research on automobile engine efficiency, alternative energy, and emission reduction. The facility contains two engine test cells, a powertrain lab, control rooms, fuel rooms, faculty and graduate student offices, and a conference room.

    Description:

    The Fraunhofer Center for Coatings and Laser Applications provides innovative research and development services based on its expertise in coating and laser technology. The overall aim of the entire Fraunhofer organization is to bridge the gap between research and industry by providing top notch applied research services that enhance the competitive edge of the customer.     Description:

    MSU researchers have collaborated to create NanoMSU.org, a web site designed to facilitate nanotechnology research and education by publicizing MSU's research expertise, facilities, and educational programs, providing a central point of contact for off-campus inquiries, distributing nanotechnology-related information of general interest, and encouraging new synergistic collaborations. The site lists participants and their areas of research, research centers, relevant news items, and other national nanotechnology research efforts.

  • Nondestructive Evaluation Laboratory (NDEL)

    Description:

    The Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Laboratory (NDEL) at Michigan State University has been at the forefront in the development of innovative solutions to NDE related problems. Nondestructive evaluation is the examination of an object for structural integrity without impairing the future usefulness of the object. The objective of NDE is to detect and characterize internal or surface cracks and corrosion in structures that can result in failure of the structure. The test method ranges from a simple visual one to more complex sensors that involve some form of energy, such as electromagnetic, acoustic, thermal, radiographic, etc.

    Research activity in the NDEL is supported by the aerospace, nuclear power, defense, natural gas and biomedical industries, among others. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation to conduct research across a broad spectrum of electromagnetic and ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation methodologies.

  • Packaging Contract Research and Testing Services

    Description:

    MSU's School of Packaging offers routine, fee-based testing services for industry. At least sixteen tests are offered, including drop testing, vibration testing, oxygen permeability, Izod impact testing, and others. Other testing services and contract research are available in many areas of package analysis and evaluation.

  • Technical Assistance Testing for Industry

    Description:

    In addition to conducting trend-setting research, the college provides testing for companies on a fee-for-service basis. Sophisticated instrumentation is available for analysis, processing, fabrication, and characterization of materials.
