  • Abrams Planetarium

    Description:

    MSU's Abrams Planetarium serves as an astronomy and space science education resource center. The Planetarium offers a variety of shows to preschool through senior citizens and promotes skywatching with publications, press releases, and public observing sessions. The Planetarium houses an exhibit hall with a book and gift counter, a blacklight gallery of astronomical art, and a hemispherical domed sky theatre.

  • Abrams Planetarium Group Instructional Programs

    Description:

    MSU's Abrams Planetarium offers a variety of single-visit instructional programs dealing with astronomical topics for a variety of age groups. Programs on stars, constellations, planets, and the moon are available for preschool and elementary children. Higher level classes are offered on additional topics. Detailed descriptions are found on the website. Teachers who desire a more intensive experience should consider bringing their class for more than one presentation. Two or more programs can be scheduled as a multiple-visit series.

  • CREATE for STEM Education Research Mini-Conference (February 2018)

    Description:

    The goals of the CREATE for STEM Mini-Conference are to: fuel discussion about efforts to improve K-16 teaching and learning of STEM, allow researchers and collaborators to share challenges and generate new ideas, and accelerate interdisciplinary collaborations.  The schedule includes two poster sessions separated by a keynote presentation and plenary discussion. This year's keynote speaker will be Dr. Mitchell Nathan from University of Wisconsin - Madison.

     

  • CREATE for STEM Institute

    Description:

    The goal of the CREATE for STEM (Collaborative Research in Educational Assessment and Teaching Environments for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Institute is to improve the teaching and learning in mathematics and science from kindergarten to higher education. It serves as a springboard and a hub for innovation, research, and intellectual collaboration, and help bring to fruition ideas and projects that will make a difference in the teaching and learning of science and mathematics for all learners regardless of their cultures or experiences.

  • CREATE Science Seminar Series (2016 - 2017)

    Description:

    The purpose of the CREATE Science Seminar series is to help create a vibrant collaborative community at MSU around research in science education K-16, to provide a venue to disseminate and discuss innovative research methods and results, to foster relationships and networking with national and international experts in STEM education research, and ultimately to help solve challenging problems in the teaching and learning of science, K-16.

  • Herbarium

    Description:

    An herbarium is a natural history collection of preserved plants that documents the diversity of plants of the world. The MSU Herbarium represents a worldwide collection of all groups of plants as well as lichens, bryophytes, and fungi. Current holdings number over 530,000 specimens, with approximately 315,000 specimens of vascular plants, 145,000 lichenized fungi, 35,000 non-lichenized fungi, and 35,000 bryophyte specimens.

  • MSU Science Theatre

    Description:

    MSU's Science Theatre, a nationally acclaimed student-run organization developed by students from a number of disciplines, performs demonstrations and lectures for K-12 students and public groups. Science Theatre performances demonstrate basic scientific concepts and inspire audience members to develop an appreciation for science in everyday life.

  • National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory

    Description:

    MSU's National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) is a national user facility devoted to basic research in nuclear science as well as accelerator and instrumentation research and development. Historically, the NSCL has played a key role in the scientific and technical education of a large number of young scientists and engineers in undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral programs. The NSCL plays an important role in pre-college and community education with programs such as a summer intern program for middle and high school teachers and guided tours of the facility to interested groups. The NSCL also has a number of research activities including research of nuclear structure and reactions; nuclear astrophysics; the Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) Project; and accelerator design and beam physics.

    Description:

    MSU's National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) Online Library provides individuals with current and permanent journals, nuclear preprints online, and a book master list. This site also provides links to upcoming conferences, nuclear isotope data, nuclear physics journals and preprints, the World Wide Web Virtual Library: Nuclear Physics, and MSU Libraries.

  • Nobel Laureate Carl Wieman Talk: Taking a Scientific Approach to the Learning and Teaching of Science (September 2017)

    Description:

    Carl E. Wieman, co-recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics and professor of physics at Stanford University, will speak at Michigan State University as part of the STEM Alliance Fall Reception.

    Dr. Wieman has done extensive experimental research in atomic and optical physics. His current intellectual focus is on undergraduate physics and science education. He has pioneered the use of experimental techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of various teaching strategies for physics and other sciences, and recently served as Associate Director for Science in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

  • Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education

    Located on the corner of Farm Lane and Mt. Hope (4301 Farm Lane) on the Campus of Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, 48823.

    Description:

    MSU's Pavilion sponsors numerous animal shows, including: horse, cattle, sheep, rabbits, and dogs. The Pavilion is also used for livestock sales. The facility is handicapped-accessible, offers easy access on-site lighted parking, full concessions, and an on-site licensed campground equipped with electrical hook-up, dump station, shower facilities and water tank fill-up locations.

  • Spartan Youth Programs Website

    Description:

    The Spartan Youth Programs Website is a catalog of the programs and activities MSU offers to preK through 12th graders on a variety of topics, including: agriculture; animal care; art, drama, and music; business; college preparation; computers; engineering; leadership skills; math and science; social studies; sports and fitness; and writing and language.

  • Tours of the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory

    Description:

    The NSCL offers middle and high school teachers and students guided tours of the Laboratory. Visitors may watch a video tape that describes the NSCL's two cyclotrons and their use in nuclear science research. The tours are available for groups of 10 - 50 people.
