  • Center for Advancing Microbial Risk Assessment

    Description:

    The Center for Advancing Microbial Risk Assessment (CAMRA) provides the tools needed to combat bioterrorism and ward off global outbreaks of infectious diseases. Along with a consortium of scientists from six other universities, MSU's Joan Rose and other MSU scientists will use the center to help shape policy and create a global strategy for dealing with these microbial risks.

    Description:

    The overarching goal of CGCEO is to contribute to the understanding of the interrelations among human, land, and climate systems in an international context, as reflected in MSU’s Boldness by Design. Building on existing strength in interdisciplinary approaches to understand the social processes, land use and land cover patterns and processes, and environmental impacts and responses at regional to global scales, the Center addresses the following key science questions:

    How are social processes altering and impacting global environmental dynamics? How do these changes, in turn, respond to and affect land and human systems?

    The research activities at the Center attempt to identify, understand and model land surface processes; determine and quantify socioeconomic root causes of and responses to global change, and assess human/animal health and ecosystem services.

  • Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability

    Description:

    The mission of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability is to develop and maintain a center of excellence that integrates ecology with socioeconomics, demography, and other disciplines for ecological sustainability from local, national, to global scales. The objectives include: conducting cutting-edge research on emerging issues related to ecological sustainability; training new generations of leading scholars for interdisciplinary research; and disseminating research findings across the globe.

  • Dunbar Forest Experiment Station (Sault Ste. Marie, MI)

    Description:

    The 5,760-acre Dunbar Forest is the largest and second-oldest MSU off-campus facility. The forest hosts long-term genetics and silvicultural studies that have helped advance the science of forest management in Michigan and the Great Lakes region. For example, red pine is the most widely planted commercial forest species in Michigan, occupying more than 850,000 acres. Successful long-term management of this important resource is based, in large part, on research results from the Dunbar Forest.

  • Economic Development Extension Resources

    Description:

    Michigan State University Extension is an educational leader in providing support to communities in green and sustainable economic development. Through programs like Stronger Economies Together, MSU Extension facilitates the development of an economic development plan in two regions in the state. Extension educators help counties work together in developing strong economic blueprints that strengthen relationships, build trust and capacity and strengthen "social capital."

  • Forest Biomass Innovation Center (Escanaba, MI)

    Description:

    The 1,745-acre MSU Forest Biomass Innovation Center in Escanaba is leading a number of initiatives to increase the sustainable use of wood in Michigan’s expanding bioeconomy. This wood will come from the surplus growing in the forests and from willow and poplar energy plantations on marginal farm land in the northern parts of the state. Work focuses on increasing yields, decreasing costs, reducing greenhouse gas and energy losses, retaining rural jobs, and improving supply chain efficiencies. Research at the center also focuses on forest genetics, silviculture and forested wetland management.

  • Fred Russ Research Forest and Park (Decatur, MI)

    Description:

    Forest products and Christmas trees are among the top 20 agricultural crops in Michigan. The 939-acre Fred Russ Forest allows researchers to conduct long-term research on Christmas tree seed production and other projects aimed at preserving the diversity and abundance of Michigan forests. The forest also features a 14-acre park that is open to the public for hiking, biking, fishing, cross-country skiing and horseback riding.

    Fred Russ Experimental Forest now offers Spartan Pure Maple Syrup as part of a research effort in best practices for high-vacuum sap extraction. Spartan Pure Maple Syrup is made from pure maple sap, with no additives or preservatives. Now available at MSU Stores, MSU Surplus, Kellogg Biological Station and Kellogg Forest.

  • Institute of Water Research

    Description:

    MSU's Institute of Water Research (IWR) provides timely information on contemporary land and water resource issues through coordinated multidisciplinary efforts and advanced information and networking systems. The IWR seeks to strengthen MSU's efforts in nontraditional education, outreach, and interdisciplinary studies using available advanced technology, and partnerships with local, state, regional, and federal organizations and individuals. Activities include coordinating education and training programs on surface and ground water protection, land use and watershed management. Research areas include: modeling, water quality, and agriculture.

  • Knight Center for Environmental Journalism

    Description:

    MSU's Knight Center for Environmental Journalism, in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, teaches student and professional journalists how to better report on the world’s most important beat.  The program serves undergraduate and graduate students and professional reporters with specialized training.  Students learn from environmental experts and journalists and report for professional award-winning publications and broadcast outlets. Under the guidance of expert faculty they experiment with new ways of explaining complex environmental issues while maintaining traditional values of fairness and accuracy.  Students who study with the center produce and publish professional level journalism, gaining valuable experience and material for building resumes.  The center also organizes and teaches workshops in the U.S. and abroad to help professional reporters improve their coverage of the environment.

  • Long-Term Ecological Research

    Description:

    The Kellogg Biological Station Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) Program studies the ecology of intensive field crop ecosystems and its environmental consequences as part of a National Network of LTER Sites established by the National Science Foundation in 1980. The KBS LTER joined the network in 1988. LTER research at KBS is designed to answer the broader question of how agronomic management can better utilize biological resources in cropping systems to control pests, provide nitrogen, and build soil fertility: In short, how to make agriculture more profitable and provide environmental benefits.

    Our main research areas include agronomy, microbial ecology, plant dynamics, insect dynamics, biogeochemistry, regionalization, ecosystem services, and biofuels. Our experimental systems range from field plots to landscapes. We study the ecology of major field crop ecosystems – annual crops such as corn, soybean, and wheat, perennial crops such as alfalfa, and biofuel crops such as switchgrass and poplars. We also study the natural, unmanaged ecosystems that occur in agricultural landscapes, such as forests and old fields.

    Description:

    The Michigan Sea Grant partnership promotes understanding and intelligent use of the Great Lakes. It addresses Great Lake issues to help Michigan citizens protect and enjoy the nation’s extensive freshwater resources. Current areas of research include fisheries, coastal erosion, river restoration, and exotic species. Extension agents located in coastal communities around the state actively assist residents, decision-makers, and resource managers in resolving problems, recognizing opportunities, and broadening understanding of the Great Lakes.

  • Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program

    Description:

    This program is intended to organize efforts of state agencies, Michigan State University (MSU), and environmental advocacy groups to advance the environmental stewardship of the Turfgrass industry and to recognize environmental achievements. This program is based around 12 modules that need to be completed for certification. Once completed a site visit is conducted to verify all items are completed by a trained MTESP Stewardship Specialist.

  • MSU AgBioResearch

    Description:

    The mission of MSU AgBioResearch is to engage in innovative, leading-edge research that combines scientific expertise with practical experience to generate economic prosperity, sustain natural resources and enhance the quality of life in Michigan, the nation and the world. MSU AgBioResearch encompasses the work of more than 300 scientists in seven colleges at MSU: Agriculture and Natural Resources, Arts and Letters, Communication Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Natural Science, Social Science and Veterinary Medicine.

    These researchers, in on-campus laboratories and at 13 outlying research centers across the state, investigate topics that range from agricultural production, alternative energy and biofuel production, food safety and environmental stewardship to childhood obesity, community development, and the quality of life of Michigan youth and families. Michigan citizens reap the benefits of this work in the form of new or improved foods and plants, new production methods and enriched lifestyles.

    Description:

    The goal of the MSU Center for Regional Food Systems is to engage the people of Michigan, the United States and the world in applied research, education and outreach to develop regionally integrated, sustainable food systems.  It strives to:

    • Partner across Michigan to advance the goals of the Michigan Good Food Charter.
    • Educate new generations to lead regional food systems research and practice.
    • Cultivate and support communities of practice around emerging regional food systems issues and opportunities.
    • Increase the visibility of and access to MSU resources that support regional good food systems.
    • Expand the resource base for regional food systems applied research, education and outreach.
    • Develop farmers and farms for regional food systems
    • Expand and coordinate engagement of MSU faculty and staff in interdisciplinary regional food systems applied research, education, and outreach.

     

     

  • Partnership for Ecosystem Research and Management

    Description:

    The Partnership for Ecosystem Research and Management's novel approach to promoting cooperation among its partners, facilitating cutting-edge natural resource research, and applying results to resource management is reflected in its objectives, which include to:

    • Augment regional capability for ecosystem-level applied research;
    • Provide outreach services to management agencies; and
    • Serve as a liaison between management agencies to facilitate cooperative research on high priority problems.

    PERM faculty members bring a common ecosystem perspective and emphasis on state-of-the-art qualitative and quantitative approaches to meet the needs of partner agencies.  In addition to addressing research needs of the partner organizations, PERM faculty provide significant technical and outreach expertise that serve agency information and technology transfer needs as well building capacity to make sustainable decisions about Michigan’s ecosystems.

  • Planning and Zoning Center

    Description:

    The Planning and Zoning Center is a multi-disciplinary team of professionals devoted to research, education, and consultation on best practices for community planning and development control. It works both independently and in cooperation with many other groups both on and off campus to build a sustainable Michigan. The goal of PZC is to improve the quality of life in the state of Michigan through sustainable development based on proper planning and the application of appropriate land use policies and development regulations. It seeks to play a major role in improving the institutional and legal structure for state, regional, county, and local planning and development regulation in the state of Michigan through applied research, outreach and training, serving citizens, public and nonprofit organizations, government, and the academic community.

     

  • Project GREEEN Agricultural Research

    Description:

    Project GREEEN, Michigan’s plant agriculture initiative housed at Michigan State University, is a cooperative effort by plant-based commodity groups and businesses in cooperation with Michigan State University AgBioResearch, Michigan State University Extension and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to advance Michigan’s economy through plant-based agriculture.  Project GREEEN has a three-pronged mission:

    • Develop research and educational programs in response to industry needs
    • Ensure and improve food safety
    • Protect and preserve the quality of the environment
  • Quantitative Fisheries Center

    Description:

    The Quantitative Fisheries Center provides a research, outreach/service, and teaching program in quantitative fisheries management and risk assessment. The Center offers online courses, workshops, and short courses. The objectives of the Center are to:

    • Build greater capacity within fishery management agencies in quantitative methods;
    • Improve quantitative methods for assessing fish stocks;
    • Assist agencies in the use of model-based approaches to decision making; and
    • Develop a better understanding of fish community and population dynamics.
  • Remote Sensing & Geographic Information Science Research and Training

    Description:

    RSGIS provides spatial analysis services to local and state government agencies.  Recognized as the leading source of spatial technology expertise in the state, RSGIS staff assists the State of Michigan with data acquisition, quality control, and software programming.  They also provide training workshops in GIS, remote sensing and cartography for working professionals.  They operate an imagery archive that houses photo and satellite images for the state of Michigan from the 1930s to present.  They employ a number of geography undergraduate and graduate students on many projects.

  • Rogers Reserve for Chestnut Production and Research (Jackson County, MI)

    Description:

    The Rogers Reserve was donated by Ernie and Mabel Rogers to Michigan State University in 1990. The Rogers were a prominent couple in the Jackson community, concerned with natural resources and food production. In 2002, at the bequest of the Rogers, an endowment was established to support the farm. Funds have been spent improving the farm and constructing Phase I and II building projects with the MSU Office of Land Management. Phase I, consisting of a steel pole building to house equipment, including a chestnut peeling line, was completed in 2005. Phase II was completed in April 2010 and consists of a wet lab, analytical lab, office and restrooms. The chestnut peeling line was purchased from Italy by the Midwest Nut Producers Council, supported by funding from the USDA Rural Development program. It is the only commercial chestnut peeling line in the western hemisphere.
