    Description:

    These events utilize ESPP's unique network of MSU expertise spanning MSU's colleges to address important and timely environmental issues that cross disciplinary boundaries. The ESPP Research Colloquia Series is a forum for MSU students, researchers and visitors to engage in research discussions where an interdisciplinary perspective is critical.

  • Enviro-weather Website for Pest, Natural Resource, and Production Management

    Description:

    The Enviro-weather website is a production management tool designed to aid agriculture and the green industry in making management decisions. The user selects a weather station location from the map to view weather data, integrated pest management models, natural resource and production models, forecasts and related links for specific commodities.

  • Fate of the Earth Symposium (April 2017)

    Description:

    The Environmental Science and Policy Program is launching a symposium series to explore the challenges and opportunities we face in enhancing human well-being while protecting the environment. This symposium will bring distinguished thinkers from around the world to explore what we know, what we need to know and what we must do as we move into a century of unprecedented environmental change, technological advancement and scale of human activity.  This year's interdisciplinary environmental science and policy symposium focuses on the "Climate-Food-Energy-Water Nexus."

  • Field Botany Course (August - September 2017)

    Class dates: August 9, 16, 23, 30, and September 6 and 13, 2017.  Registration required by August 4, 2017.

    Description:

    Learn about Michigan’s diverse natural vegetation, emphasizing basic ecological principles of plant distribution, and influences on Michigan major vegetation types. You will also learn basic botanical taxonomy and ecology as we get a close-up look at plant parts and identify characteristics for 40-50 plants. You will also develop skills in using family features and a botanical key to identify plants.  The Field Botany course offers two-hour classes, once a week for six weeks. There will be two classroom sessions and four field sections.

  • Field Ornithology Course (March - May 2017)

    • Tuesday evening lectures: March 21, April 4 and 18, May 2 and 16, 2017 from 6-8:30 pm
    • Saturday morning field trips: March 25, April 8 and 22, and May 6 and 20, 2017 from 8-11 am

     

    Location:

    Lectures are held at the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary: 12685 East C Ave., Augusta, MI 49012.

    Saturday field trips visit area birding hotspots including the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, Kellogg Forest, Lux Arbor, and areas around Gull Lake.

    Description:

    The Field Ornithology Course is an engaging, hands-on course that offers a fun way to learn more about the fascinating world of birds and improve your bird watching and identification skills. Each two part lecture will include a talk from a state or local scientist/ expert followed by an identification lesson. Field trips visit local birding hot spots and are led by experienced birders.  All skill levels are welcome!

  • Forest Biomass Innovation Center (Escanaba, MI)

    Description:

    The 1,745-acre MSU Forest Biomass Innovation Center in Escanaba is leading a number of initiatives to increase the sustainable use of wood in Michigan’s expanding bioeconomy. This wood will come from the surplus growing in the forests and from willow and poplar energy plantations on marginal farm land in the northern parts of the state. Work focuses on increasing yields, decreasing costs, reducing greenhouse gas and energy losses, retaining rural jobs, and improving supply chain efficiencies. Research at the center also focuses on forest genetics, silviculture and forested wetland management.

  • Fred Russ Research Forest and Park (Decatur, MI)

    Description:

    Forest products and Christmas trees are among the top 20 agricultural crops in Michigan. The 939-acre Fred Russ Forest allows researchers to conduct long-term research on Christmas tree seed production and other projects aimed at preserving the diversity and abundance of Michigan forests. The forest also features a 14-acre park that is open to the public for hiking, biking, fishing, cross-country skiing and horseback riding.

    Fred Russ Experimental Forest now offers Spartan Pure Maple Syrup as part of a research effort in best practices for high-vacuum sap extraction. Spartan Pure Maple Syrup is made from pure maple sap, with no additives or preservatives. Now available at MSU Stores, MSU Surplus, Kellogg Biological Station and Kellogg Forest.

  • From Lab Bench to Plant Workshop (May 2017)

    Description:

    The MSU Bioeconomy Institute in Holland, Michigan, hosts a week-long, hands-on, chemical process scale-up workshop. The workshop will familiarize participants with the transitional issues encountered in moving a chemical process from the laboratory bench to a chemical plant. The workshop is available for credit (4 hours) or as non-credit.

  • GIS Applications in Natural Resources Summer Course (July, August 2017)

    Description:

    Application of geographic information systems, remote sensing, and global positioning systems to integrated planning and management for fish, wildlife, and related natural resources.  3 credits.  No prerequisites.

  • Great Lakes Echo News Portal

    Description:

    The Great Lakes Echo news portal is a daily digest of environmental stories that appear in daily newspapers, as well as original reporting by MSU's Knight Center students and MSU's Capital News Service students. One-sentence summaries of each story are linked to the full versions. Subscribers can receive the digest by e-mail or RSS feed.

    Description:

    The Great Lakes Education Program (GLEP) introduces fourth-grade students to the unique features of the Great Lakes through a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience. The program is designed to stimulate interest in the Great Lakes and help students understand their role in protecting these vital freshwater resources.

  • Herbarium

    Description:

    An herbarium is a natural history collection of preserved plants that documents the diversity of plants of the world. The MSU Herbarium represents a worldwide collection of all groups of plants as well as lichens, bryophytes, and fungi. Current holdings number over 530,000 specimens, with approximately 315,000 specimens of vascular plants, 145,000 lichenized fungi, 35,000 non-lichenized fungi, and 35,000 bryophyte specimens.

  • High Impact Targeting (HIT) Tool for Sedimentation Reduction

    Description:

    HIT is an on-line tool that allows users to prioritize erosion and sedimentation reduction conservation efforts in the Great Lakes Basin. Users can compare watersheds by total erosion or sediment load, rates of erosion or sediment loading, and the cost benefit of best management practices (BMPs). Users can also view field-level maps, in 2D and 3D, showing areas at high risk for erosion and sediment loading.

  • Institute of Water Research

    Description:

    MSU's Institute of Water Research (IWR) provides timely information on contemporary land and water resource issues through coordinated multidisciplinary efforts and advanced information and networking systems. The IWR seeks to strengthen MSU's efforts in nontraditional education, outreach, and interdisciplinary studies using available advanced technology, and partnerships with local, state, regional, and federal organizations and individuals. Activities include coordinating education and training programs on surface and ground water protection, land use and watershed management. Research areas include: modeling, water quality, and agriculture.

    MSU AgBio Research, MSU Extension, and The Savory Institute are hosting a two-day workshop entitled, “The Foundations of Holistic Management."  This course exposes participants to insights into holistic management, holistic decision-making, environmental principles, and holistic planning procedures for increased success. Understanding Holistic Management allows you to plan, manage, and grow your business to build wealth while building biological capital, and meeting the needs of the people involved.

  • Invasive Species ID Training Modules

    Description:

    These online training modules aid in the education of citizen scientists about invasive species. The modules require Adobe Flash and are HTML5 compatible, making them viewable on mobile devices. Each module will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.
