Community Music School Early Childhood Music Classes

MSU's Community Music School offers early childhood music classes that are designed to create a rich music environment in which children can interact in any way they feel most comfortable. Some children are active participants, while others prefer to watch and absorb. Although the classes differ according to the age levels and readiness of the children, all classes include singing and chanting in a wide variety of tonalities and meters. Many of the songs performed in class are without words because children tend to focus on words rather than on musical content. Also provided are opportunities for age-appropriate movement, with a focus on guiding children to move in a sustained, continuous, and relaxed way. Parents of children younger than three are required to participate with their children in class activities. Parents need not be musicians to enjoy what happens in class and to be of musical value to their child.
