    Description:

    MSU's Institute of Water Research (IWR) provides timely information on contemporary land and water resource issues through coordinated multidisciplinary efforts and advanced information and networking systems. The IWR seeks to strengthen MSU's efforts in nontraditional education, outreach, and interdisciplinary studies using available advanced technology, and partnerships with local, state, regional, and federal organizations and individuals. Activities include coordinating education and training programs on surface and ground water protection, land use and watershed management. Research areas include: modeling, water quality, and agriculture.

    The MSU Pesticide Safety Education Program offers IPM certification training and updates for pesticide applicators and provides education and information for applicators and the general public about pesticide safety. Events include: Pesticide Credit Clinics - MNLA & MSU PSEP; Core Manual/RUP Review, Pest and Crop Management Update Meetings; Soybean Management Research and Technology (SMART) Meetings; Core Review; Pesticide Applicator Core Manual Review; Restricted Use Pesticide Training; and Pesticide Certification Review Sessions.

    The Intermediate Level Requirements for Food Manufacture builds on the Basic Level Requirements and focuses on knowledge required by persons responsible for food safety in the food manufacturing sector, food safety educators, or those working in related positions.

  • International Short Course: Agricultural Biotechnology and Biosafety (August 2018)

    Description:

    Education and awareness on various aspects of agricultural biotechnology including environmental biosafety and food safety issues will help assist government agencies various stakeholders make informed decisions on genetically engineered crops and products. This program is designed to help participants better understand various issues surrounding the use and management of agricultural biotechnology globally.  The focus of this training program is on biotechnology research, policies and regulations, management, and public outreach components as well as biotechnology related trade issues.

  • International Short Course: Food Safety (July 2018)

    This week-long International Short Course in Food Safety. The course focuses on food safety policy development, risk analysis, and program implementation. The course provides hands-on training and experience in various aspects of food safety in both public and private sector settings. Components of the course include:

    • Food systems, food safety, and international food trade
    • Regulatory and policy issues in food safety
    • Microbial and chemical hazards
    • Food safety issues with biotechnology products
    • Risk assessment, management, and communication
    • Food preservation including irradiation
    • Antibiotic resistance
    • Hazard detection system
    • Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles and practice
    • Information and training resources in food safety
    • Field visits to food and meat processing sites in Michigan

    Description:

    This two-day course demonstrates the complex capabilities of the ArcGIS software. Through conceptual overview and hands-on applications, participants will learn how to perform powerful queries and map displays. Participants will become familiar with the ArcGIS graphical user interface (GUI) and explore methods for creating, editing, displaying, querying, and analyzing geographic and tabular data in this software. Course textbook is included in the fee.

  • Kellogg Biological Station K-12 Partnership Workshop for Science Teachers (April 2018)

    The 2018 Workshop will introduce the newest member of the KBS faculty, senior terrestrial ecologist Nick Haddad, as our plenary speaker. Nick comes to MSU from NC state where his research focuses on corridors and other approaches to conserve rare species and biodiversity in fragmented landscapes.

    MSU's Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center, located on campus, displays a unique atmosphere, with cultural and sporting activities right at its back door.     Description:

    Dairy farm owners and managers, and dairy industry professionals will learn about the latest research and strategies to improve parlor performance with employee education and animal behavior in mind. Topics include the impact of milking practices on bimodal and over milking, developing milking protocols, employee training, animal handling, parlor efficiency, holding pen design/management, mastitis identification, and milk culturing and how these impact profit.

    During this day-long workshop, Dr. Bridget Behe, Michigan State University professor of horticulture, will discuss all aspects of marketing products at your retail garden center. Topics that will be discussed include how to understand your current customer base, customer behaviors while shopping, your pricing strategy, how to design effective displays, and much more. Please bring your businesses’ mission statement and the hardest item you sell (or a photo of it). Registration ($69) includes lunch, morning and afternoon snack, and handouts.

  • Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program

    Description:

    The Michigan Master Gardener Program is a horticulture education and volunteer leader training program offered by MSU Extension. It provides home gardening information to Michigan citizens through a network of trained volunteers. An interest in plants, a personal commitment to volunteerism, and an enthusiasm for sharing knowledge with others are the only prerequisites. Applicants attend classes in their county, learning basic horticultural principles and environmentally sound gardening practices. They then provide volunteer leadership and service to their community through a variety of gardening-related activities. The program objectives are to provide instruction in basic horticultural science to motivated active gardeners and to provide MSU Extension with trained volunteers who will provide timely, accurate information to the public in the rapidly expanding area of home horticulture.

  • Michigan AgrAbility Program for Agricultural Workers With Disabilities

    Description:

    The Michigan AgrAbility Program assists agricultural workers who have physical and mental disabilities, including such disabilities as amputation, arthritis, spinal cord injury, and hearing impairments. Education and evaluation assistance are available to accommodate disabilities, eliminate barriers, and create a favorable climate among rural service providers for people with disabilities. Established in 1992 by MSU Extension's Farm Safety Program, the Michigan AgrAbility Program is now under the direction of the Easter Seals Society of Michigan, Inc. Michigan State University Extension's Farm Safety Program is a source of information on the Michigan AgrAbility Program for farmers with disabilities who wish to remain in agricultural work occupations.
