  • Dairy Management Certificate Program

    Location:

    Students have the opportunity to gain practical knowledge and experience on several cooperating dairy operations around MSU. Courses in dairy cattle health and evaluation are regularly conducted at Green Meadow Farms in Elsie, Michigan. Farms across Michigan are utilized in other courses. In addition, students have the opportunity to learn about dairy management and cutting edge research at the MSU Dairy Teaching and Research Center located south of campus in East Lansing.  Students interested in pasture based systems and robotic milking can become involved in teaching and research programs at the Kellogg Biological Station in Hickory Corners.

    Description:

    The Dairy Program is designed to give students a basic foundation of knowledge and skills about dairy cows, the dairy industry, and dairy farming as a business which they can continue to build upon after graduation from the program. Courses are practical in nature and focus on the basic knowledge and skills needed to be successful on all types of dairy operations as an owner, herdsman, or dairy farm employee. Students are also employed by agricultural businesses that support dairy operations.  Students are exposed to a wide range of topics, ideas, and most importantly, dairy industry leaders, including producers, during their education. Visits to farms and meeting successful dairy producers and managers are an important part of the program. The Dairy Program exposes students to the many exciting opportunities that are available in the dairy industry. The program attempts to create enthusiasm and passion for the dairy industry in each student.

    Description:

    Come and delight in MSU ice cream and cheese, while in sight of the cows whose milk creates our dairy foods! We will have family and kid friendly activities. Guests can enjoy a wagon ride, check out tractors and learn about Michigan’s agricultural landscapes. Wagon tours depart every half hour starting at 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. See you on the farm!

  • Dunbar Forest Experiment Station (Sault Ste. Marie, MI)

    Description:

    The 5,760-acre Dunbar Forest is the largest and second-oldest MSU off-campus facility. The forest hosts long-term genetics and silvicultural studies that have helped advance the science of forest management in Michigan and the Great Lakes region. For example, red pine is the most widely planted commercial forest species in Michigan, occupying more than 850,000 acres. Successful long-term management of this important resource is based, in large part, on research results from the Dunbar Forest.

  • Electrical Apprenticeship Online Program

    Description:

    The Online Electrical Apprenticeship program is a four year program registered with the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship and Training. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded a certificate of completion by Michigan State University.

    This program provides the Related Technical Instruction (RTI) required by the State of Michigan through the revisions of implementation Public Act 217 of 1954, Rule 338.88e. It gives the apprentice the necessary theoretical and technical knowledge needed to become a successful journey person. It also gives additional practice of job-related skills and knowledge. The USDOL standards require that a minimum of 144 hours per year of apprenticeship training is to be provided to each trainee.

  • Electrical Technology Certificate Program

    Description:

    The Electrical Technology Certificate Program is an electrical apprenticeship training program with an emphasis on residential, agricultural, commercial, and industrial wiring. Students study the latest electrical codes, electrical fundamentals, various electrical installations, motor controls, and solid state electronic applications. Throughout the program, students are also provided training in energy efficiency and alternate power systems.  This program provides the advanced technical training that is important for a successful career in the electrical field.  The diverse and intensive educational experience allows graduates to manage new technologies and electrical codes, to solve problems, and make safe and efficient electrical installations in an ever changing field.

  • Emerald Ash Borer Online Insecticide Guide

    Description:

    "Insecticide Options for Protecting Ash Trees from Emerald Ash Borer" is an online guide that provides the most up-to-date information on insecticides that can be used to combat this pest, as well as what to consider before treating ash trees. The guide includes frequently asked questions, information on insecticide products available for EAB control and how to use them, and a summary of results from studies that tested the effectiveness of the various insecticides. The guide also presents key points to consider and recommendations for dealing with EAB.

  • Enviro-weather Website for Pest, Natural Resource, and Production Management

    Description:

    The Enviro-weather website is a production management tool designed to aid agriculture and the green industry in making management decisions. The user selects a weather station location from the map to view weather data, integrated pest management models, natural resource and production models, forecasts and related links for specific commodities.

    Description:

    The MSU Farmer Field School is comprised of intensive one and two day hands-on workshops. These are tailored to deliver in-depth, practical information built upon the foundational work of the MSU Organic Farmer Training Program and the wealth of knowledge in Michigan’s farming community.  The 2019 topics include: Forcing bulbs, flowers and branches for early spring flower sales; weeds and cultivation for lean farm production; Lansing farm tours; Grand Rapids farm tours; Build a greens dryer and bubbler; farmer brain trust; food security roundtable; and Expo of Small Farm Innovation.

    This course starts with an introduction to MOOCs and Food Fraud in general. Additional content includes: global laws and regulations which are both governmental- and industry-led, a review of the fraudsters and fraud events, an introduction to criminology theory and methods to assess the fraud opportunity, systems and techniques to both identify efficient countermeasures and to reduce specific vulnerabilities, and then next steps for governments or companies.

    Each course includes two, 2-hour webinars. For students who successfully complete the course and assessment a certificate of completion is offered for $100 fee.

  • Food Fraud Vulnerability Assessment and Food Fraud Prevention Strategy Development: Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)

    The Food Fraud VACCP Implementation MOOC provides insight on the broad GFSI-based requirements to develop and implement a Food Fraud Vulnerability Assessment (FFVA) and a Food Fraud Prevention Strategy (FFPS). Together the FFVA and FFPS create a Vulnerability Assessment and Critical Control Point system or VACCP. The VACCP concept is one of the three GFSI Food Safety Management System requirements that include a food safety Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point system (HACCP) and a food defense Threat Analysis and Critical Control Point system (TACCP).

    This free course is offered in two, 2-hour webinars. If the exam is successfully passed, a Certificate of Completion is available for a $100 fee.

    The MSU Online Food Program has partnered with Institute for Food Laws and Regulations to offer non-credit professional short courses are for anyone interested in learning about a new topic or in need of a refresher. Taught at the graduate level with material provided by our excellent instructors. Upon completion of a short course, students will earn a Certificate of Participation and those who complete the course with a score of 90% or higher will earn a Certificate of Mastery.

  • Food Laws and Regulations in China: Online Graduate Course (May - August 2019)

    Description:

    This course is designed to provide students with an overview of various aspects of food law in China. Taught with an IFLR lead instructor along with various China food law experts from around the world, this redesigned course has been updated to reflect the latest laws and regulations and touches on emerging issues.

    Topics include: cultural, socio-economic differences compared to other countries/regions; organization of China's food laws, delegation of risk assessment and risk management roles and responsibilities in the Government of China; cross border and e-commerce issues; food labeling and claims permitted; novel food approval; genetic modification and; food additives and contaminants. Hot topics such as food safety, food fraud, and import-export issues such as tariffs and liabilities toward consumers will also be addressed.

    Description:

    Michigan State University Extension food preservation workshops cover a variety of topics customized to each  audience. Food preservation topics may include freezing, boiling water bath canning, pressure canning and dehydrating.  MSU Extension food safety educators teach food preservation skills and techniques that will provide participants with safe, high-quality canned products. Using up to date research methods, participants learn how to successfully and safely preserve food.
