  • A Brand's New World Online Conference: Latin America (June 2021)

    A Brand’s New World is a special, no-cost, online conference series on brand protection issues post-pandemic, looking into the future.  Hosted by the A-CAPP Center, the conference series offers opportunities for attendees to share and learn from Center experts, as well as their expert partners in industry, academia, law enforcement, and government.

    Join us for “A Brand’s New World,” Latin America on June 15-17, 2021 where we will discuss brand protection issues in Latin America. We will highlight our interactive panel discussions as well as providing space for smaller breakout groups. Main sessions will be in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

  • Annual Regulatory Studies Program (August 2021)

    Description:

    This set of essential courses (affectionately known as the “Camp” program) is designed specifically to meet the educational needs of regulatory professionals, particularly those working at state and federal commissions and other public-sector and not-for-profit organizations. The Institute’s highly experienced program faculty members are drawn from various academic, governmental, and other organizations. Interactive presentations cover all aspects of the regulatory process, as applied generally and particularly to electricity, natural gas, and water sectors. Attendees receive a certificate of completion from Michigan State University and the program is consistently eligible for CLE and CPE credits in most jurisdictions, as well as credit toward IPU’s Certificate of Continuing Regulatory Education (CCRE).

  • Better Process Control School (March 2021)

    Description:

    Federal regulations require that each processor of low-acid or acidified foods must operate with a certified supervisor on hand at all times during processing. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has selected Michigan State University as one of the authorized schools to present the Better Process Control School.

    Students who successfully complete this course will meet FDA certification requirements.

    MSU's Center for Advanced Study of International Development (CASID) promotes and coordinates the work of faculty and students interested in developing countries from the perspectives of the social sciences and liberal arts. CASID has a strong commitment to its outreach mission serving K-12 teachers and students, post-secondary institutions, government, and business.  Outreach resources include: Publications; K-12 Outreach (LATTICE); Midwest Institute for International/Intercultural Education; International Business Institute for Community College Faculty, and International Business Center (CIBER). 

     

  • Center for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies

    Description:

    The Center for European and Russian/Eurasian Studies (CERS) at Michigan State University aims to promote study and understanding of European, Eurasian, and Russian culture, society, and political issues. CERS has developed an exceptional program in European and Eurasian studies, combining formerly separate programs and faculties in Western European Studies and Russian, East European and post-Soviet Studies into an integrated pan-European and Eurasian Center, which emphasizes the need to explore linkages and study emerging challenges that transcend the cold war divisions of Europe and reach authoritatively into Post-Soviet Central Asia. The Center offers undergraduate specializations in Russian and East European Studies (REES) as well as Western European Studies (WES).

    Description:

    Michigan State University Extension offers both one- and two-hour workshops on Michigan’s Cottage Food Law. This law allows residents to prepare and store certain foods in a home kitchen.

    The one-hour workshop covers the food safety aspect of preparing cottage foods for sale, including preparing, packaging, labeling, storing and transporting cottage foods.

    The two-hour workshop combines the business and food safety aspects of preparing and selling cottage foods safely and successfully. These workshops are taught by MSU Extension food safety and MSU Product Center educators.

    Participants in the workshops will receive a manual and a food safety participation certificate of completion.

  • D.A.R.E. Michigan Training Center

    Description:

    MSU's School of Criminal Justice heads up the D.A.R.E. Michigan Training Center, which serves as a resource for police officers to bring a clear, comprehensive, and consistent K-12 D.A.R.E. message to kids in Michigan's classrooms to enhance children's development of healthy positive behaviors. Goals of the Center include:

    • Communicating the D.A.R.E. message through elementary, junior high, and senior high curricula;
    • Establishing statewide awareness of the D.A.R.E. program and how it can assist the fight against drugs and violence in schools and communities;
    • Serving as an information resource for the accumulation, interpretation, and dissemination of the D.A.R.E message; and
    • Offering the best training and technical assistance to provide schools and communities with quality D.A.R.E. police officers.

    The Center is also involved in the evaluation of the New D.A.R.E Program curricula, which will be administered to middle school and high schools in six cities across the country.

  • Effective Communication in the Municipal Environment Program (Online, Self-paced, 2020)

    Description:

    This self-paced, online program consists of five lessons that focus on the full range of knowledge and skills needed to communicate within the municipal environment.  Upon registration, you will receive a sixty-page self-study document and notes to tell you which sections to read with detailed instructions on how to complete the program requirements.

    The self-study program helps those who work in or interact with local government to understand the most efficient and effective way to communicate in their working environment. Many of our participants have indicated the need for a program that helps them communicate with their associates at work, with elected and full time local government representatives and officials and with concerned citizens within their communities.

    The self-study document, compiled by an MSU specialist who has immense experience working in the municipal field, is written in the style of a fictional narrative. This narrative is designed to make the learning experience highly practical, as it considers how an administration can improve communications internally and with citizens. It is based on a city, the mayor, elected officials, full time officers and employees with a focus on utilities supervision.

    The program and therefore the narrative is divided into five sections or lessons, and after completion of each section, you will complete an online multiple-choice examination to test your learning.

    This is the recommended third course in the Food Fraud Prevention training series. It builds in parallel to the Food Fraud Prevention Audit Guide MOOC and provides an in-depth review of compliance requirements including: US Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), US Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), and others.

    Description:

    This is the introductory course in the Food Fraud Prevention training series and is an excellent starting point for education and insight on the current compliance requirements. In addition to a general overview of Food Fraud, the content includes: global laws and regulations which are both governmental- and industry-led, a review of the fraudsters and fraud events, an introduction to criminology theory and methods to assess the fraud opportunity, systems and techniques to both identify efficient countermeasures and to reduce specific vulnerabilities, and then next steps for governments or companies.

    Description:

    This is the recommended fourth course in the Food Fraud Prevention training series. It builds upon the Overview MOOC, the Food Fraud Prevention Audit Guide MOOC and the Food Defense Threat Audit Guide MOOC to present the key concepts in a Food Fraud Vulnerability Assessment and Critical Control Point system (VACCP). The VACCP concept is a program parallel to a Food Safety Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point system (HACCP) and a Food Defense Threat Assessment and Critical Control Point system (TACCP).

    The monthly GB Club luncheons provide outstanding speakers and relaxed networking opportunities. With extensive international experience, the speakers wrap personal insights around a practical and up-to-the-minute approach to conducting international trade.

  • International Short Course: Agricultural Biotechnology, Biosafety, and Technology Transfer: ONLINE (July 2020)

    Education and awareness on various aspects of agricultural biotechnology including environmental biosafety and food safety issues will help assist government agencies various stakeholders make informed decisions on genetically engineered crops and products. This program is designed to help participants better understand various issues surrounding the use and management of agricultural biotechnology globally.  The focus of this training program is on biotechnology research, policies and regulations, management, and public outreach components as well as biotechnology related trade issues.

  • International Short Course: Food Safety (November 2020)

    This week-long International Short Course in Food Safety. The course focuses on food safety policy development, risk analysis, and program implementation. The course provides hands-on training and experience in various aspects of food safety in both public and private sector settings. Components of the course include:

    • Food systems, food safety and international food trade.
    • Food Safety Modernization Act
    • Regulatory issues/policy issues in food safety like, non-tariff trade barriers, international food laws.
    • Microbial, physical and chemical hazards.
    • Food safety issues with biotechnology products.
    • Risk assessment, risk management and risk communication.
    • Food preservation including irradiation.
    • Hazard detection system.
    • Hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP): Principles and practice.

    Description:

    MSU's Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center, located on campus, displays a unique atmosphere, with cultural and sporting activities right at its back door. Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center offers state-of-the-art conference facilities, including a 300-seat auditorium and 30 multi-function meeting rooms accommodating groups of 10 to 1,000. When planning an event, the Conference Services department provides personal assistance from beginning to end. The Audio-Visual department also provides equipment and technical assistance.   • Kinship Caregiver: I Don't Have Time for That!: Self-Care and Stress Reduction Techniques for Busy Caregivers (Online, Self-paced)

    This online training will present self-care and stress reduction tools and techniques for caregivers to improve their holistic well being. Self-care is a mindful and intentional practice which includes boundary setting, gratitude for the self, and self-awareness. Exploration of self-needs, self-assessment, and the use of mindfulness will be presented in this webinar. Resources will be focused for busy caregivers on the go.

  • Labor Education Program (LEP) for Union Leaders and Members

    Description:

    The Labor Education Program brings together University faculty and Union leadership to provide training for union leaders and members. LEP works closely with the labor movement on local, state, and national levels to further guarantee that programs are designed to fit the needs of local membership as well as International Union staff. LEP provides an extensive curriculum in leadership and bargaining skills, labor law, communications, labor economics, and government. Targeted training and tutorials can be designed to assist unions with emerging trends and teach new skills. LEP faculty are available to consult with unions on specific training needs and help union leadership design and implement educational programs that benefit their members.

  • Legislative Leadership Program

    Description:

    MSU’s Legislative Leadership Program invites new members of Michigan’s House of Representatives and Michigan Senate to engage in interactive small-group sessions with university faculty in the brief time between election and their first legislative sessions. The program is built upon a series of specially designed events, including presenters, researchers and facilitated discussions. Sessions are focused on topics of compelling interest, from the state’s revenue stream, to its expenditures, K-12 education, demographics and innovations.

  • Michigan Cottage Food Law Online Program

    This is an online training program for Michigan Cottage FoodJelly Jars Law Food Safety certification. The Michigan Cottage Food Law allows Michigan residents to manufacture and store particular foods in an unlicensed kitchen, such as a residential home. Through this program participants will learn about the Cottage food law and other principles you can use to provide safe products. Cottage Food Law Food Safety training educates on preparing and selling foods under the Cottage Food Law, producing a safe food product, production, packaging and labeling, storing and transporting.

  • Michigan Health Policy Forum

    Description:

    The Michigan Health Policy Forum was established in 1986 by a bipartisan group of healthcare stakeholders from state government, health organizations, the community and academia. Michigan State University is proud to have served as the convener and administrator of the forum for its 30 year history. The purpose of the Forum is to provide policymakers with an opportunity to learn about and discuss health policy issues in an atmosphere free from partisan demands. The Forum is guided by an Advisory Board of health policy stakeholders who provide recommendations on the topics and speakers presented by the Forum.
