    In the spirit of comprehensive coverage, the Americans with Disabilities Act is often ambiguous, making the opportunity for conflict within the workplace high. ADA in the Workplace - Joint Management of Disability Programs provides participants with a set of tools that enables them to anticipate and mediate conflicts before they become disputes. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides a mechanism for protecting qualified disabled individuals from discriminatory actions on the part of employers with 15 or more employees.

    Description:

    Gain the confidence to manage the Family and Medical Leave Act effectively, and earn your FMLA Specialist Certification from Michigan State University, one of the most recognized programs in Human Resources advanced education. You will gain a solid understanding of the FMLA so that you can manage FMLA absences, promote attendance, and ensure compliance. Certification is achieved by participating in the class and passing the online examination.

    Description:

    Aligning your labor relations strategy with business and operational strategies is critical for achieving and sustaining a competitive advantage. The Certified Labor Relations Leader (CLRL) examination allows you to evaluate your understanding of labor relations concepts, and differentiate yourself through professional certification. The examination is taken online and is offered in two periods per year. It contains a variety of question types, including multiple choice, answer completion, and short answer. The scenarios used in the questions reflect real-world scenarios.

    Description:

    The week-long Certified Workers' Compensation Professional (CWCP) program provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to be recognized as a professional in this field. Attendees should have some experience in workers' compensation. Seminar topics include Principles of Disability Law; Claims Management & Insurance; Safety; Disability Prevention and Management Issues; and Medical Issues. 

  • Employment Law Online Course--Avoiding Claims by Discharged Employees

    Description:

    This is part of an eight-unit online course discusses specific situations that affect an employer's decision in the area of employee terminations, such as exceptions to employment at will, special protections for whistleblowers and claims of discrimination. You will learn from actual court cases and decisions, gain knowledge of key concepts and engage in practice applications through short learning activities. In addition, you will gain familiarity with valuable resources you will refer to again and again. This course is the seventh of eight courses.

    The Employment Law Online: Avoiding Claims by Discharged Employees course focuses on employment law issues arising when an employer makes a decision to discharge an employee. Its content covers employment laws and court decisions that will prepare you to make decisions about employee terminations and avoid claims by discharged employees.

    The Employment Law Online: Employee Privacy Interests focuses on employment law issues arising in connection with the privacy interests of employees. Its content covers an employer's requirements in collecting and maintaining personal information about applicants and employees. This course will also help employers in conducting investigations and other surveillance that may affect employee privacy.

  • Employment Law Online Course--Health Issues of Employees

    In Employment Law Online: Health Issues of Employees, participants will learn to recognize which applicants and employees are entitled to accommodations under the ADA, identify employers' obligations to follow occupational safety and health guidelines and compensate employees appropriately for injuries and illness that arise from work.

  • Employment Law Online Course--Post Employment Rights and Benefits

    Description:

    The Employment Law: Post Employment Rights and Benefits course focuses on employment law issues concerning the rights of and benefits for employees who have left an employer's organization. Its content covers employers' obligations after the employment relationship has ended, including reference requests, continuation of health benefits under COBRA, retiree health benefits, ERISA rights, pension plans and unemployment compensation. This is the last of eight courses.

  • Employment Law Online Course--Preventing Harassment

    Description:

    The Employment Law Online: Preventing Harassment is the third online course offered through MSU's School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. This course teaches participants how to recognize harassment, respond appropriately to claims of harassment and train managers and supervisors to deal with harassment in appropriate ways.

    By learning to address harassment on the job, participants taking this course will be able to continue to implement good human relations practices by treating employees fairly and promoting productivity in compliance with employment laws.

  • Employment Law Online Course--Recruitment and Hiring Practices

    The Employment Law Online: Recruitment & Hiring Practices module is the second online course offered through MSU's School of Human Resources & Labor Relations. This course is designed for human resource professionals, upper level managers, and others who handle human relations issues in the workplace on a regular basis. This course is also appropriate for attorneys who advise professionals in the area of human resources.

    Participants taking this course will learn to continue to implement good human relations practices, while treating employees fairly and promoting productivity, in compliance with employment laws in these areas.

    Description:

    Facilitation Skills and Techniques (Facilitator Institute) focuses on the training of individuals who can effectively facilitate process improvement and problem solving efforts in public or private sector organizations. The five-day program represents an intensive period of training that provides substantive learning, interactive exercises to apply the principles, and the building of a toolkit of techniques useful in working with teams, task forces, and other groups.

    Together, farmers and others will share in discussion of successful (and unsuccessful) practices and approaches to finding balance between the work of farming and life off the farm or at least off the clock. How do passion, values, ideals, goals and financial security for the farm mesh with those of family and loved ones, and our own personal limits? A look at how and why we make the decisions we do and what we can learn from each other and understand about the farm and family life we choose.

    There is no charge for this workshop. Lunch provided.

    Description:

    Human Resources Executive Education (HREE) provides continuing education programs for human resources, labor relations, and management professionals. It conducts open enrollment and on-site programs in every state and the District of Columbia. Seminars are led by instructors chosen for their professional knowledge, theoretical expertise and extensive practical experience. Seminars are usually limited to 30 participants to stimulate networking and a more personal learning environment. All programs can be adapted for in-house supervisory training and can be customized to an organization's specific needs. Custom course program topics include:

    Description:

    The importance of the job analysis process cannot be overstated – yet many human resources professionals have never had the hands-on, in-depth training needed to conduct accurate job analyses.

    This interactive workshop will prepare you to conduct job analyses that provide needed information to enhance performance and minimize risk. Once you’ve mastered the data collection and analysis process, you’re ready to explore how to enhance work processes through job design and re-design. You will learn about the different approaches to job design, when each is most appropriate, and how to apply them to the jobs in your organization.

    Finally, you will be able to write meaningful job descriptions that inform the recruiting, interviewing and selection of employees; guide employees as they perform their work, and provide managers with the information they need to lead high-performance work teams.

    Description:

    Through this course, you will learn to administer the labor contract, manage grievances, and prepare for arbitration. To effectively manage in a Unionized Organization, leaders must be dedicated to successful contract administration, effective management of the grievance process, and preparedness for arbitration.
