    MSU's Beef Cattle Research & Teaching Center conducts basic and applied beef cattle research and teaching that benefits beef cattle producers and, ultimately, consumers in Michigan. Research projects at the Center look at the productivity of Michigan feedlots, reproductive physiology, and ruminant nutrition. Tour groups from all over the world come to observe the facilities and techniques involved in the management of a commercial size feedlot.

  • Laboratory for Comparative Orthopaedic Research

    The Laboratory for Comparative Orthopaedic Research (LCOR) is a multidisciplinary research laboratory dedicated to applied basic science research of the musculoskeletal system of humans and animals. LCOR focuses its research on sports-related injuries such as the repair and reconstruction of ligamentous and meniscal injuries of the knee. The Laboratory has investigated and developed several techniques of tissue repair and transplantation that are currently in clinical use in both animals and humans.

  • McPhail Equine Performance Center

    The McPhail Chair was created for research in all aspects of the relationship between veterinary medicine and dressage performance, with special emphasis on prevention and treatment of lameness problems. The goal of the chair is to perform scientific investigations which directly benefit the sport of dressage. The Center holds links to the current research work being done at the McPhail Lab. These links include research projects such as joint movements and powers in normal gait; kinematic and kinetic evaluation of dressage gaits; rider effects; center of mass; and lameness evaluation.

  • Molecular Respiratory and Equine Genetics Laboratory

    The Molecular Respiratory and Equine Genetics Laboratory researches the molecular mechanisms of inherited diseases in the horse and the genetic predisposition to respiratory tract diseases in all species. A current project focuses on the genetic mechanisms that predispose to asthma, a potentially fatal respiratory disease affecting humans and cats.

  • Partnership for Ecosystem Research and Management


    The Partnership for Ecosystem Research and Management's novel approach to promoting cooperation among its partners, facilitating cutting-edge natural resource research, and applying results to resource management is reflected in its objectives, which include to:

    • Augment regional capability for ecosystem-level applied research;
    • Provide outreach services to management agencies; and
    • Serve as a liaison between management agencies to facilitate cooperative research on high priority problems.

    PERM faculty members bring a common ecosystem perspective and emphasis on state-of-the-art qualitative and quantitative approaches to meet the needs of partner agencies.  In addition to addressing research needs of the partner organizations, PERM faculty provide significant technical and outreach expertise that serve agency information and technology transfer needs as well building capacity to make sustainable decisions about Michigan’s ecosystems.

  • Quantitative Fisheries Center

    The Quantitative Fisheries Center provides a research, outreach/service, and teaching program in quantitative fisheries management and risk assessment. The Center offers online courses, workshops, and short courses. The objectives of the Center are to:

    • Build greater capacity within fishery management agencies in quantitative methods;
    • Improve quantitative methods for assessing fish stocks;
    • Assist agencies in the use of model-based approaches to decision making; and
    • Develop a better understanding of fish community and population dynamics.
