  • African Language Classroom Instructional Guide

    Description:

    MSU’s Center for Language Education and Research (CLEAR) offers a tutorial guide written for teachers of African languages. The African Language Tutorial Guide acts as support material for native speakers of African languages who may or may not have a language teaching background, as well as for trained African language teachers. The guide offers three different groupings of lesson plans: basic language-learning lesson plans for beginners, task-based lessons, and cultural-based modules. The guide also has ideas for integrating structure into a communication-based classroom with sections on teaching vocabulary, integrating grammar, and understanding the sound system. There is also a video to be used as a training tool for new language teachers who may not be familiar with the language teaching activities found in the guide.

    Description:

    Signing Online offers a series of four ASL (American Sign Language) courses that will give you the basic skills to become fluent in ASL. In ASL, the hands communicate by forming signs, which have meaning just like spoken words in English. ASL also means learning how to express yourself using your eyes, face and movements and body movements. The course also provides valuable information and insights for communicating with deaf and hearing impaired individuals.

    The Center for Language Education and Research (CLEAR) at Michigan State University offers onsite workshops for foreign language instructors. These onsite workshops bring members of CLEAR's professional development staff to K-13+ institutions across the country.

    Workshop topics include both methodology and technology-related areas. Onsite visits depend on the availability of CLEAR personnel. Contact us as far in advance as possible for the best chance of arranging an onsite workshop at your institution, as we have a very small cadre of available presenters

  • Center for Language Education And Research (CLEAR) Webinars

    Description:

    CLEAR at Michigan State University offers Webinars that are online workshops for language teachers. Unlike many webinars, the modules are interactive and focus on specific topics of interest to language teachers. Webinars are largely self-directed and self-paced, but a facilitator will be available to answer questions as participants need additional help.

    Unlike face-to-face workshops, the on-demand format of webinars accommodates your busy schedule. The webinars are designed to be modular, so you can complete a webinar in a single block of time (between one and six hours, with most of them being three hours). Get relevant, useful professional development when you need it.

    The Confucius Institute at Michigan State University consults with and assists schools and other organizations to develop customized Chinese language and cultural learning programs. CI-MSU also helps schools and school districts recruit qualified Chinese teachers and provides instructional materials, on-going professional development, and on-site support.

    Description:

    MSU's Center for Language Education And Research (CLEAR) offers a video and discussion guide promoting the study of foreign languages. The video is designed in two parts. The first part is intended for use by middle and high school students; the second part is designed for kindergarten through 12th grade educators. A discussion guide accompanies the video and contains preview and postview activities to help educators in facilitating discussion.

  • Elementary Business Chinese CD-ROM

    Description:

    MSU's Center for Language Education And Research (CLEAR) has developed a Business Chinese CD-ROM which is a computer-based, interactive courseware for elementary business language. The software uses multimedia elements (sound, photographs, and text) to engage students in a variety of activities with an emphasis on oral communication.

The small group sizes and supplemental online resources provide hands-on learning experiences for individuals with and without prior foreign language knowledge.

    Sessions for Beginners/Advanced Beginners and Advanced are offered. All classes meet in Wells Hall on campus. There will be no class meetings during MSU's Spring Break (March 5-9). Classes will be canceled if fewer than 8 people register.

    Description:

    The workshops focus on teaching methodology, cultural content, resources for teaching, practicing the target language, and networking. Topics have included music, teaching with technology, multicultural societies, communicative language teaching, implementing literature in the language classroom, teaching culture, and translation.  

    Täglich benutzen Schüler verschiedene Technologien und Lehrkräfte müssen mit dieser Realität auch im Unterricht umgehen. Trotz ihrer Erfahrungen heißt es nicht unbedingt, dass Schüler Digitale Kompetenz besitzen. Digitale Kompetenz bedeutet nicht nur Medien zu konsumieren, sondern auch Inhalte zu finden, teilen, und kreieren. Im Workshop werden Lehrkräfte erfahren, wie man Digitale Kompetenz unterstützt, auch mit Film- und Druckmedien.

    The SLS Symposium is a series of presentations by Second Language Studies Ph.D. students and keynote speakers. This year’s speakers are Dr. Pavel Trofimovich from the Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance at Concordia University, and Dr. Christine Tardy from the Department of English at the University of Arizona.
