    MSU's Center for Language Education And Research (CLEAR) in the College of Arts and Letters is one of 16 language resource centers in the United States. CLEAR's goal is to promote and support foreign language teaching and learning in the U.S. through second language research, materials development, and professional training workshops.

    The Center for Language Teaching Advancement (CeLTA) is the internal support unit for language learning and teaching at Michigan State University. In collaboration with the language departments within the College of Arts and Letters, the CeLTA Language School (CLS) programming has expanded over the years to include a variety of programs for K-12 students as well as professional development opportunities for K-16 teachers and language classes for adults. All programs are organized and conducted by MSU faculty members, graduate students, advanced undergraduate students, and community members

  • LInguistically Responsive Instruction for Immigrant and Refugee Youth: Professional Development (July 2018)

    Description:

    This free workshop will focus on how to facilitate emergent bilinguals’ reading comprehension and meaning-making through discussions of informational texts in content area classrooms. Teachers will spend each morning observing Carrie Symons’s class as she facilitates middle and high school immigrant and refugee youth’s reading comprehension. After lunch, teachers will spend the afternoon with Dr. Symons and colleagues from the Department of Teacher Education to explore the principles of linguistically responsive instruction and how to integrate them into practice to ensure every student has equitable access to content.

    MSU's Center for Language Education And Research (CLEAR) offers on-site technology training workshops for foreign language instructors in the U.S. The workshops are held at the participants' home institutions and are tailored to fit the participants' individual needs.

    Every year MSU's Center for Language Teaching and Advancement (CeLTA) offers professional development opportunities for K-16 teachers throughout Michigan. The workshops focus on teaching methodology, cultural content, resources for teaching, practicing the target language, and networking.

    • Increasing proficiency through World Language Core Practices (Section 1)
    • Differentiated instruction in the language classroom
    • Real-life genres for teaching reading and writing: From nutrition labels to restaurant reviews
    • Proficiency-oriented games: How to make games useful and why
