    Description:

    Michigan State University Extension is an educational leader in providing support to communities in green and sustainable economic development. Through programs like Stronger Economies Together, MSU Extension facilitates the development of an economic development plan in two regions in the state. Extension educators help counties work together in developing strong economic blueprints that strengthen relationships, build trust and capacity and strengthen "social capital."

    Each year, the MSU-EDA University Center for Regional Economic Innovation (REI) organizes the Innovate Michigan! Summit, a conference that brings together economic experts and enthusiasts alike to share, learn, and create unique and innovative approaches to economic development and revitalization in the State of Michigan.

    The 9th annual Innovate Michigan! Summit and Michigan Inventors Coalition (MIC) will be held online in early September. The Innovate Michigan! Summit features presentations on innovative economic development tools, models, programs, and policies from around the state. Following the Summit, participants are invited to stroll the MIC Expo and network at the evening reception.

  • Master Citizen Planner Live Webinar Series (March - September 2020)

    Description:

    The 2020 Master Citizen Planner (MCP) Webinar Series is designed to offer participants the latest updates and information on current topics. Using Zoom Webinar, MSU Extension educators will provide an overview of topics of interest to planning and zoning officials. Most of the webinars fall on the third Thursday in March, April, May, June (4th Thursday), July and September.  Webinars take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Each session is available individually or participants can register for all six at once. All webinars will be recorded and sent to registrants.

  • Placemaking Assessment Tool

    Description:

    The Land Policy Institute has released a Placemaking Assessment Tool (PAT) that will continue to help communities develop quality places that are attractive and functional in Michigan.  The purpose of placemaking is to create quality places where people want to live, work, play, learn and visit. Effective placemaking creates or restores a higher quality living environment in key parts of a community through urban development or redevelopment and provides a wider range of living, transportation, entertainment, recreation and related options to existing and new residents in (and visitors to) communities.

  • Zoning Administrator Certificate Training Program (January, February 2020)

    Description:

    This program was designed to offer zoning administration techniques in ways that reduce legal risks to the zoning administrator (ZA) and their community. It is the ONLY such program in the state!  There are eight training modules in the Zoning Administrator Certificate Program, and each is 1.5-2.5 hours of classroom time (including an individual or group activity).

    • Job Description, Responsibilities and Basic Ethics.
    • Legal Issues.
    • Reviewing Applications: Common Procedures and Use of Forms.
    • Reviewing Plot Plans and Site Plans.
    • Inspections and Violations.
    • Preparing Files, Reports and Record Keeping
    • Interactions with other Professionals and Agencies, and Departmental Duties.
    • Customer Service and Counter Behavior.
