    Description:

    Profitable crop production depends on effective weed control. Effective weed control in field crops requires the use of a combination of management techniques, including cultural methods and herbicides. This manual looks at the advantages and disadvantages of many pest management techniques.

    Description:

    Michigan State University partners with colleges and universities across the state to offer regionally relevant agricultural training programs for careers in some of Michigan's highest demand industries. Students will benefit from dual enrollment at both institutions with all courses delivered locally at the partnering institution.

    The 55-credit Agricultural Operations program provides students with a solid background in plant and soil science, precision agriculture, water management, entomology, plant pathology and business management. It exposes students to exciting opportunities available in the industry.

  • Apprentice Farmer Program (Chatham, MI)

    Description:

    The Apprentice Farmer Program is a farm incubator program that aims to serve as the launching point for individuals interested in starting their own farming enterprise. This two-year, residential program provides farming entrepreneurs with the necessary tools and assistance needed to ensure a solid start to their farming career.

    Land, equipment, tools, and mentorship are provided to qualified applicants so they can develop a business plan, establish accounts, build capital, and fine-tune skills. The apprentice farmers will grow alongside the talented North Farm staff and other apprentice farmers, sharing ideas, techniques, and labor.

  • Berry Crop Entomology Information and Resources

    Description:

    The Isaacs Lab studies the biology and management of insects in berry crops. Members of the lab are currently working on pest phenology, pheromone mating disruption, pollination, biological control, and selective insecticide evaluations, all with insects found in berry crops. Their extension program provides growers with practical information to make decisions about insect management, to improve their productivity, profit, and environmental safety.

    Pollination is critical for production of most berry crops, and we are investigating the ecology and management of pollinators and their economic value. We are also exploring the interactions between landscape structure and beneficial insects, both natural enemies and pollinators, in Michigan farmland.

  • Biological Control for Greenhouse Growers Online Course (June - August 2019)

    Description:

    This non-credit, pre-recorded online course on biological control is the third course in the College of Knowledge Online series offered on the eXtension campus, the national Extension website. The content of the course covers introductory materials to more advanced concepts such as utilizing banker plants. The material is also available in Spanish. The 4-hours of pre-recorded lecture and video demonstrations are divided into six units:

    • Unit 1: Introduction to Greenhouse Biological Control
    • Unit 2: Commercially Available Biological Control Agents 
    • Unit 3: Using Banker Plants in Biological Control Programs

  • Clarksville Research Center (Clarksville, MI)

    Description:

    The Clarksville Research Center (CRC) hosts research on small fruits and tree fruits as well as potatoes, chestnuts and a variety of other crops. Research at the 440-acre site includes variety development, fruit thinning and growth regulators, dwarf rootstocks for fruit trees, integrated pest management, organic production systems and new pruning practices to help make production more profitable, efficient and environmentally friendly. CRC is a valuable site for inoculated potato late blight field trials because of its isolation from potato-growing areas.

  • Emerald Ash Borer Online Insecticide Guide

    Description:

    "Insecticide Options for Protecting Ash Trees from Emerald Ash Borer" is an online guide that provides the most up-to-date information on insecticides that can be used to combat this pest, as well as what to consider before treating ash trees. The guide includes frequently asked questions, information on insecticide products available for EAB control and how to use them, and a summary of results from studies that tested the effectiveness of the various insecticides. The guide also presents key points to consider and recommendations for dealing with EAB.

  • Enviro-weather Website for Pest, Natural Resource, and Production Management

    Description:

    The Enviro-weather website is a production management tool designed to aid agriculture and the green industry in making management decisions. The user selects a weather station location from the map to view weather data, integrated pest management models, natural resource and production models, forecasts and related links for specific commodities.

    Description:

    The Field Crops Team provides farmers with easily accessible, pertinent information to help make management decisions easier.   • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Resources for Teachers

    Description:

    There are many great resources available to teachers and students to learn more about insects, pests, pesticides and Integrated Pest Management, and to supplement IPM activites in the classroom. Our elementary school IPM curriculum, developed by Erica Jenkins, is a resource that presents the opportunity for K-6 educators to engage students in STEM educational objectives and interdisciplinary learning through Integrated Pest Management (IPM).  The curriculum provides background information, hands-on activities, worksheets and links to additional sites that teachers can utilize to engage students in formal and informal real-world settings.  While some of the lessons build on previous learning, most of the lessons can stand-alone.

    Description:

    The Michigan Organic Farming Exchange site offers agricultural producers and farmers with technical information and guidance to manage soil, grow organic crops and identify profitable markets. The exchange provides information to farmers and consumers interested in understanding organic production methods and suggests ways to successfully transition conventional production to organic-certified or not.

  • Michigan Turfgrass Growing Degree Day Tracker Web Site

    Description:

    The Michigan Turfgrass Growing Degree Day Tracker Website helps golf course managers predict the best timing for applications. This site uses predictive models that incorporate climatological data, which provides more consistent results than using the calendar. The site starts calculating growing degree days on March 1, and lists the latest totals for 91 weather stations across Michigan. The totals are updated daily throughout the spring.

    The MSU Diagnostic Services Lab assists a wide variety of people experiencing problems with plants and pests. There are many things that cause plant problems. This laboratory specializes in diagnosing problems caused by arthropods (insects, mites, ticks, etc.), pathogens (fungi, bacteria, viruses), and nematodes.
