    The Center for Economic Analysis provides timely, high quality research, data, and analysis that contributes to the overall awareness of how the agricultural, natural resource, and related sectors and other community economic development activities contribute to the state economy. The CEA provides a number of services, including:

    Description:

    MSU's Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR) applies research to important public policy issues, and strengthens relationships between the academic and policymaker communities. IPPSR is involved in:

    • Promoting and conducting interdisciplinary research on public policy issues;
    • Providing survey research and evaluation services through the Office for Survey Research;
    • Producing public policy and political leadership education and training programs such as the Legislative Leadership Program, Michigan Political Leadership Program, and Tomorrow's Political Leaders; and
    • Engaging in problem solving discussions around pressing societal needs.

    Examples of projects include the State of the State Survey, the National College Health Assessment survey, and the Thumb Rural Health Network Survey. IPPSR offers an annual Policy Forum Series, which serves as an interactive meeting about issues facing Michigan communities. The Institute's Web site also contains searchable publications, information on special projects, and links to related public policy Web sites.

    Description:

    The Forums are open to all who want to learn more about current issues being discussed in the policy arena. Each panelist will discuss their perspective before the forum opens to audience discourse. Attendees have an opportunity to contribute to the policy discussion.  A light lunch is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Legislative Leadership Program

    Description:

    MSU’s Legislative Leadership Program invites new members of Michigan’s House of Representatives and Michigan Senate to engage in interactive small-group sessions with university faculty in the brief time between election and their first legislative sessions. The program is built upon a series of specially designed events, including presenters, researchers and facilitated discussions. Sessions are focused on topics of compelling interest, from the state’s revenue stream, to its expenditures, K-12 education, demographics and innovations.

  • Michigan Health Policy Forum

    Description:

    The Michigan Health Policy Forum was established in 1986 by a bipartisan group of healthcare stakeholders from state government, health organizations, the community and academia. Michigan State University is proud to have served as the convener and administrator of the forum for its 30 year history. The purpose of the Forum is to provide policymakers with an opportunity to learn about and discuss health policy issues in an atmosphere free from partisan demands. The Forum is guided by an Advisory Board of health policy stakeholders who provide recommendations on the topics and speakers presented by the Forum.

  • Michigan Policy Network

    Description:

    The Michigan Policy Network is a student-led public education and research program to report and organize news and information about the political process surrounding Michigan state policy issues. It is run out of the Department of Political Science at Michigan State University, with participation by students from the College of Social Science, the College of Communication, and James Madison College.

  • Michigan Political Leadership Training Program

    Dates:

    MPLP fellows are required to attend one weekend session per month from February through November, generally beginning with dinner at 6pm.on Friday and meeting until 4pm on Saturday.

    Description:

    The Michigan Political Leadership Program (MPLP) is a multi-partisan leadership training program that identifies individuals from across the state who are committed to community service and brings them together to engage in a public policy and leadership curriculum. The curriculum incorporates practical politics, public policy analysis and process, personal leadership development, and effective governance. MPLP Fellows gain the expertise to tackle public policy issues in the community as candidates for office, as government officials, or as citizen activists.

    Annually, a diverse group of 24 individuals are awarded the opportunity to participate in a hands-on curriculum that incorporates personal leadership development, public policy process and analysis, governance, and campaigning. Practical skills training are emphasized. Fellows participate in team and coalition-building activities to foster communication and the exchange of ideas. The MPLP faculty is comprised of elected officials, political activists, MSU faculty, media, and business professionals from across Michigan.
