    MSU's English Language Center, in the College of Arts and Letters, serves not only international MSU students who need to improve their English language skills but also individuals who are not seeking a degree at MSU but who want to improve their English skills.

  • Increasing Proficiency Through World Language Core Practices (June, July 2018)

    Description:

    Looking to up your proficiency game? World Language Core Practices, recently published by ACTFL, are research-supported “teacher moves” that support language learners in gaining proficiency. The practices include using the target language, providing interpersonal communication tasks, employing functional goals and objectives, teaching grammar use in context, using authentic texts, and providing appropriate feedback. Participants in this full-day workshop will explore the reasoning behind World Language Core Practices, and the how-to of using them, and planning for nurturing more proficient world language students. Continuing Education Units offered.

    This resource provides educators with Web listings, books available at the MSU Library, and journal articles. The primary focus is on multicultural literature, which offers positive role models for all children.

  • One Book, One Community Annual Program Kick-Off Event with Justice Sotomayor (August 2018)

    Description:

    The One Book, One Community program welcomes U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who will speak at the One Book, One Community kick-off event. She will talk about this year's book, Mayor's own "My Beloved World," a frank and loving account of her coming of age and her large extended family, many with roots still in Puerto Rico.

  • Red Cedar Writing Project Summer Invitational Institute (June - July 2018)

    Description:

    MSU’s chapter of the Red Cedar Writing Project (RCWP) invites six outstanding teachers of writing, regardless of discipline, to apply to participate in its annual Invitational Institute. During the Summer Institute teachers demonstrate for one another promising approaches to writing instruction, focus on their own fiction and non-fiction writing skills, participate in writing groups, identify questions that they have related to the teaching and practice of writing, and engage in reading that expands their understanding of literacy pedagogies, policies and research. At the conclusion of their work in the SI, these teachers are identified as RCWP Fellows and NWP Teacher-Consultants (TCs) — a credential that is recognized in all fifty states and nine foreign countries.
