  • Biological Control for Greenhouse Growers Online Course (June - August 2019)

    Description:

    This non-credit, pre-recorded online course on biological control is the third course in the College of Knowledge Online series offered on the eXtension campus, the national Extension website. The content of the course covers introductory materials to more advanced concepts such as utilizing banker plants. The material is also available in Spanish. The 4-hours of pre-recorded lecture and video demonstrations are divided into six units:

    • Unit 1: Introduction to Greenhouse Biological Control
    • Unit 2: Commercially Available Biological Control Agents 
    • Unit 3: Using Banker Plants in Biological Control Programs
    • Unit 4: Implementing a Biological Control Program      
    • Unit 5: Interactions of Pesticides and Biological Control Programs

    Description:

    The MSU Farmer Field School is comprised of intensive one and two day hands-on workshops. These are tailored to deliver in-depth, practical information built upon the foundational work of the MSU Organic Farmer Training Program and the wealth of knowledge in Michigan’s farming community.  The 2019 topics include: Forcing bulbs, flowers and branches for early spring flower sales; weeds and cultivation for lean farm production; Lansing farm tours; Grand Rapids farm tours; Build a greens dryer and bubbler; farmer brain trust; food security roundtable; and Expo of Small Farm Innovation.

  • Fruit, Vegetable and Organic Horticulture Management Certificate Program

    Description:

    The Fruit, Vegetable, and Organic Horticulture Management program provides students an opportunity to gain the necessary skills for a successful career in the fruit and vegetable industries. The program combines classroom instruction and theory with practical experience gained through laboratories, campus horticultural facilities for teaching and research, and a professional internship.  The 48-credit East Lansing based program is 3- 4 semesters of classroom instruction and a semester off-campus in a professional internship. It couples academics with hands-on field practice and also offers study abroad opportunities.

    Students will benefit from a core set of classes in applied plant science, soil science, entomology, irrigation systems, pruning, career development, and plant pathology.  The core required courses lay the foundation for understanding the best practices in fruit and vegetable production.   Through a wide range of elective courses in agribusiness, agricultural technology, and horticulture students can then tailor their studies to individual preferences.  Examples of elective areas include agri-food systems, sales, agricultural finance, organic farming, greenhouses, plant propagation and much more in the management of plant production.

    Description:

    This non-credit pre-recorded online course on greenhouse and horticultural lighting is the second course in the College of Knowledge Online series offered on the eXtension campus, the national Extension website. The course is intended for greenhouse and ornamental plant growers and others interested in learning about the fundamental concepts about how plants respond to light quality, quantity, and in duration. It provides introductory to moderately-challenging content based on experiments performed at Michigan State and Purdue Universities. The course is also available in Spanish.

  • Michigan Garden Plant Tour (July/August 2019)

    Description:

    This annual Michigan Garden Plant Tour is a free, coordinated open house of leading young plant producers of ornamentals and Michigan State University.  The objective of the Tour is to educate growers and industry professionals about new and existing plant selections and how they perform in different settings. Expect to learn about a wide range of ornamental crops, including popular commercial brands of annuals and perennials. This is a terrific way to observe plant performance at different locations and grown under various conditions, both in the ground and in containers.

  • Produce Safety Rule Training and Certification

    Description:

    The FSMA Produce Rule Grower Training will cover a broad swath of produce safety. Topic areas include worker health and hygiene, water quality in pre-harvest and post-harvest environments, crop inputs and wildlife. Much of this training will help reinforce what growers already know and put into practice on their farms. The curriculum is recognized as adequate by the FDA for the training requirement of the Food Safety Moderization Act Produce Safety Rule written in provision 112.22(c).

    All MSU Extension trainings are conducted by educators who meet the training requirements for the FSMA Produce Safety Rule. In addition, a Produce Safety Alliance lead trainer is present at all training events.

    Individuals who complete the Produce Safety Alliance Grower Training will be eligible to receive a certificate from the Association of Food and Drug Officials.  There is no cost for this program.

    Description:

    This non-credit, pre-recorded online course on root zone management is intended for greenhouse and ornamental plant growers and others interested in learning about the fundamental concepts about irrigation water, media, and their effects on plant nutrition. The course covers the latest practical information on root zone management techniques for ornamental crops in a greenhouse. Participants enrolled in this self-paced course will take a pre-test and a final exam to gauge their learning of the topics. Self-assessment quizzes will engage students with the material throughout the course.
