  • Beef Cattle Management Certificate Program

    Description:

    The Beef Cattle Management Certificate Program is designed to allow individuals the opportunity to specialize in the area of beef cattle management in a one-year intensive program. The certificate provides students with knowledge and experience in the management of both cow/calf and feedlot enterprises. This one-year program is centered around hands-on clerkships at the MSU Beef Cattle Teaching Center and the MSU Beef Cattle Research Center. Students have the opportunity to become involved in some of Michigan’s most important events for beef cattle: the Michigan Beef Expo and the Michigan Cattlemen’s Bull Test.

  • Beef Cattle Teaching & Research Center

    At this time, there are no open visiting hours. Please call the farm manager at 517-353-2245 to schedule a tour. Visitors must not have visited a foreign country in the 7 days prior to visiting the farm.

    Description:

    MSU's Beef Cattle Research & Teaching Center conducts basic and applied beef cattle research and teaching that benefits beef cattle producers and, ultimately, consumers in Michigan. Research projects at the Center look at the productivity of Michigan feedlots, reproductive physiology, and ruminant nutrition. Tour groups from all over the world come to observe the facilities and techniques involved in the management of a commercial size feedlot.

  • Beef Cattle Ultrasound Scanning

    Description:

    A field technician certified by the ultrasound Guidelines Council is available to perform ultrasound scanning for beef cattle to evaluate carcass merit for breeding selection and market readiness. Breeders can scan yearling bulls and heifers for carcass traits and have this information included in National Cattle Evaluation ultrasound EPDs. 

  • Dairy Management Certificate Program

    Location:

    Students have the opportunity to gain practical knowledge and experience on several cooperating dairy operations around MSU. Courses in dairy cattle health and evaluation are regularly conducted at Green Meadow Farms in Elsie, Michigan. Farms across Michigan are utilized in other courses. In addition, students have the opportunity to learn about dairy management and cutting edge research at the MSU Dairy Teaching and Research Center located south of campus in East Lansing.  Students interested in pasture based systems and robotic milking can become involved in teaching and research programs at the Kellogg Biological Station in Hickory Corners.

    Description:

    The Dairy Program is designed to give students a basic foundation of knowledge and skills about dairy cows, the dairy industry, and dairy farming as a business which they can continue to build upon after graduation from the program. Courses are practical in nature and focus on the basic knowledge and skills needed to be successful on all types of dairy operations as an owner, herdsman, or dairy farm employee. Students are also employed by agricultural businesses that support dairy operations.  Students are exposed to a wide range of topics, ideas, and most importantly, dairy industry leaders, including producers, during their education. Visits to farms and meeting successful dairy producers and managers are an important part of the program. The Dairy Program exposes students to the many exciting opportunities that are available in the dairy industry. The program attempts to create enthusiasm and passion for the dairy industry in each student.

  • Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health Diagnostic Testing Services

    Description:

    The Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health brings together ten MSU labs that make up Michigan's only comprehensive animal health diagnostic center. The Center works in collaboration with the State of Michigan, public health officials, private practice veterinarians, livestock producers, and others in the farming community to protect humans and animals from disease and toxic substances. The new facility consolidates labs, offices, and classrooms into a single structure where over 1.5 million diagnostic tests are conducted each year on samples to determine the presence of such diseases as bovine tuberculosis, West Nile virus, and chronic wasting disease. The Center is also considered a front line of defense in detecting biological and chemical agents used in bioterrorism against U.S. animal agriculture.

    Description:

    MSU's Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health has a  mandate to protect the public by ensuring the health of animals in the state of Michigan and around the nation. In the more than 30 years since its inception, DCPAH has become one of the country’s premier veterinary diagnostic laboratories, handling more than 220,000 cases involving approximately 1.5 million tests annually. The Center has active clients in all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and 12 foreign countries.

    DCPAH produces a series of information cards on a variety of laboratory topics that give a description of the topic and services provided.  Major topic headings include:

  • Livestock Industries Certificate Program

    Location:

    Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI

    Description:

    The Livestock Industries certificate program is a three semester program designed to give students a professional advantage in the livestock production career field of their choice. Students are exposed to a broad spectrum of applied course work and hands-on education at the university’s facilities and an extensive industry internship. Students engage with leading professors, researchers, and future professional colleagues in a manner that is directly applicable to a functioning livestock operation and also develop communication skills while bridging the gap between theory and practical best management practices. 

    Students are required to complete courses in reproduction, animal nutrition, anatomy and physiology, live animal and carcass evaluation, livestock management and farm business management. This program is unique in that allows students to pick elective courses as well so that they can further specialize their educational plan to meet their needs, making them more marketable once they enter the work force. These courses can include agricultural economics, crop and soil science, agricultural technology and animal science.

  • Michigan Livestock Expo (July 2018)

    Description:

    The Michigan Livestock Expo is a multi-species livestock event including beef, sheep, swine, and goats, designed to enhance the livestock industry, educate youth and showcase Michigan's agriculture industry. Champions in each species will be sold at a special evening industry celebration. The dairy industry will also be holding the Michigan Dairy Expo simultaneously at the MSU Pavilion.

  • Pegasus Critical Care Center for Horses

    Location:

    MSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

    Description:

    The Matilda R. Wilson Pegasus Critical Care Center is a 9,000-square-foot facility that allows the Veterinary Teaching Hospital to house large-animal patients with infectious diseases in an isolated place, minimizing the risk of spreading disease to other animals and people while providing state-of-the-art critical care.  The center includes a number of special features, including ten individual isolation stalls, on-site laboratory capability, and a specialized ventilation system that helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases. There is also video equipment that allows clients to see their animals without entering the isolation stall.
