  • Art History and Visual Culture Symposium (November 2017)

    Description:

    The Art History & Visual Culture Symposium recognizes the scholarly achievement of emerging undergraduate students studying Art History & Visual Culture in the Department of Art, Art History, and Design at Michigan State University. The symposium will feature independent research projects presented by students nearing the end of their degree program.

    The 2017 keynote speaker is Dr. Joanna Grabski. Her research addresses the intersection of urbanism and visual culture in Senegal’s capital city of Dakar. Grabski is the Director of the School of Art at Arizona State University, and recently published Art World City: The Creative Economy of Artists and Urban Life in Dakar.

  • Community Music School Classes

    Description:

    MSU's Community Music School offers classes for musicians of all ages and abilities, from infants through adults. Some classes are for novices, others are for those with varying degrees of musical knowledge and experience. Classes are taught by members of the CMS or MSU College of Music faculty who have expertise in the subject and who are committed to providing quality professional music instruction to all who desire it. Classes include: Early Childhood Music, Young Musicians, MMTA Preparation (music theory), High School/Adult Music Theory, and Special Topics. Private lesson students may enroll in one class per semester. The Community Music School reserves the right to cancel any class that fails to meet a certain enrollment threshold, typically 3-4 students.

  • Community Music School Partnerships

    Description:

    MSU's Community Music School (CMS) partners with public and private schools to provide music instruction. For example, Montessori Children's House in Lansing and Radnor Montessori in Okemos have contracted with CMS to provide music teachers for preschool and elementary children and beginning band instruction. CMS also partners with the Haslett Public Schools and Happy Time School in Lansing to provide early childhood music instruction.

  • Teaching and Rehearsing in the High School Band and Orchestra Room (June, July 2018)

    Description:

    This workshop will look at concepts and ideas to help high school band and orchestra directors improve their rehearsal skills. Topics will include planning, pacing, inspiring, motivating students, adjusting, assessing, and ways to incorporate humor, drama, and artistic integrity into your rehearsals. (MUS 891, Sec 305, 1 credit).
