  • Berry Crop Entomology Information and Resources

    Description:

    The Isaacs Lab studies the biology and management of insects in berry crops. Members of the lab are currently working on pest phenology, pheromone mating disruption, pollination, biological control, and selective insecticide evaluations, all with insects found in berry crops. Their extension program provides growers with practical information to make decisions about insect management, to improve their productivity, profit, and environmental safety.

    Pollination is critical for production of most berry crops, and we are investigating the ecology and management of pollinators and their economic value. We are also exploring the interactions between landscape structure and beneficial insects, both natural enemies and pollinators, in Michigan farmland.

    Description:

    The Clarksville Research Center (CRC) hosts research on small fruits and tree fruits as well as potatoes, chestnuts and a variety of other crops. Research at the 440-acre site includes variety development, fruit thinning and growth regulators, dwarf rootstocks for fruit trees, integrated pest management, organic production systems and new pruning practices to help make production more profitable, efficient and environmentally friendly. CRC is a valuable site for inoculated potato late blight field trials because of its isolation from potato-growing areas.

    Description:

    The MSU Farmer Field School is comprised of intensive one and two day hands-on workshops. These are tailored to deliver in-depth, practical information built upon the foundational work of the MSU Organic Farmer Training Program and the wealth of knowledge in Michigan’s farming community.  The 2019 topics include: Forcing bulbs, flowers and branches for early spring flower sales; weeds and cultivation for lean farm production; Lansing farm tours; Grand Rapids farm tours; Build a greens dryer and bubbler; farmer brain trust; food security roundtable; and Expo of Small Farm Innovation.

    Description:

    Michigan State University partners with colleges and universities across the state to offer regionally relevant agricultural training programs for careers in some of Michigan's highest demand industries. Students will benefit from dual enrollment at both institutions with all courses delivered locally at the partnering institution. The 48-credit Fruit and Vegetable Crop Management program provides students an opportunity to apply practical knowledge and training on the selection, use, and management of fruit and vegetable crops. The program combines classroom instruction and theory with practical experience gained through field laboratories and a professional internship. Graduates of the program are prepared for careers in the fruit and vegetable industry.

  • Fruit, Vegetable and Organic Horticulture Management Certificate Program

    Description:

    The Fruit, Vegetable, and Organic Horticulture Management program provides students an opportunity to gain the necessary skills for a successful career in the fruit and vegetable industries. The program combines classroom instruction and theory with practical experience gained through laboratories, campus horticultural facilities for teaching and research, and a professional internship.  The 48-credit East Lansing based program is 3- 4 semesters of classroom instruction and a semester off-campus in a professional internship. It couples academics with hands-on field practice and also offers study abroad opportunities.

    Students will benefit from a core set of classes in applied plant science, soil science, entomology, irrigation systems, pruning, career development, and plant pathology.  The core required courses lay the foundation for understanding the best practices in fruit and vegetable production.   Through a wide range of elective courses in agribusiness, agricultural technology, and horticulture students can then tailor their studies to individual preferences.  Examples of elective areas include agri-food systems, sales, agricultural finance, organic farming, greenhouses, plant propagation and much more in the management of plant production.

  • Michigan Garden Plant Tour (July/August 2019)

    Description:

    This annual Michigan Garden Plant Tour is a free, coordinated open house of leading young plant producers of ornamentals and Michigan State University.  The objective of the Tour is to educate growers and industry professionals about new and existing plant selections and how they perform in different settings. Expect to learn about a wide range of ornamental crops, including popular commercial brands of annuals and perennials. This is a terrific way to observe plant performance at different locations and grown under various conditions, both in the ground and in containers.

  • Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Center (Traverse City, MI)

    Description:

    This 100-acre center sits in the five-county northwestern region that produces almost half of the U.S. supply of tart cherries and is responsible for 83 percent of sweet cherry production in Michigan. Founded through the efforts of the northwestern Michigan area fruit industry, the center is the premier research site for integrated pest management, horticultural production and handling, value-added processing, marketing and farm financial management practices for wine grapes, apples, plums, sweet and tart cherries, and hops. In addition to creating and expanding knowledge through leading-edge research on cherries and other fruits, the center disseminates state-of-the-art information to the Michigan fruit industry and the public.

    Description:

    This Website features information on the latest research-based IPM and cultural practices. IPM is the use of pest and environmental information along with available pest control methods, including cultural, biological, genetic and chemical methods to prevent unacceptable levels of pest damage by the most economical means and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment. The site provides growers with pest identification information and links to current vineyard management advice from MAES researchers and MSU Extension specialists.

  • Rogers Reserve for Chestnut Production and Research (Jackson County, MI)

    Description:

    The Rogers Reserve was donated by Ernie and Mabel Rogers to Michigan State University in 1990. The Rogers were a prominent couple in the Jackson community, concerned with natural resources and food production. In 2002, at the bequest of the Rogers, an endowment was established to support the farm. Funds have been spent improving the farm and constructing Phase I and II building projects with the MSU Office of Land Management. Phase I, consisting of a steel pole building to house equipment, including a chestnut peeling line, was completed in 2005. Phase II was completed in April 2010 and consists of a wet lab, analytical lab, office and restrooms. The chestnut peeling line was purchased from Italy by the Midwest Nut Producers Council, supported by funding from the USDA Rural Development program. It is the only commercial chestnut peeling line in the western hemisphere.

    Description:

    MSU’s Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center combines research projects and educational programs on fruits, vegetables, field crops, and woody ornamentals, as well as environmental quality issues. The mission of the Center is to enhance the economic viability of agriculture in the state of Michigan through the development and practical demonstration of technological advances in plant materials and cultural practices, as well as farm management. The Center keeps area producers and processors aware of solutions to the region’s agricultural problems.

  • Trevor Nichols Research Center for Fruit Industry Research (Fennville, MI)

    Description:

    The primary objective of the 156-acre Trevor Nichols Research Center is to find the best ways to keep fruit pest-free in Michigan while preserving the environment and ensuring economic viability for the state’s fruit growers. Research topics include studying performance attributes of reduced-risk pesticides, optimizing delivery systems for crop protection materials, monitoring and controlling invasive and emerging pests, and developing novel pest management tactics. The center also supports IR-4, a United States Department of Agriculture project that works with specialty crop growers, registrants and the United States Environmental Protection Agency to register products for use on specialty crops, including reduced-risk pesticides.

  • Viticulture Certificate Program (Dowagiac and Traverse City, MI)

    Description:

    Viticulture is a term used that refers to grape production and vineyard management.  In response to an industry need for professionals with regional grape industry knowledge, the MSU Institute of Agricultural Technology has partnered with Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac, Michigan and Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Michigan to offer a Viticulture Certificate program.  Students in the program will also take online courses from the Viticulture and Enology Science and Technology Alliance (VESTA).  This combined program will enable students to complete a Viticulture Certificate from the Institute of Agricultural Technology while working towards an Associate’s degree from SMC.

    The Viticulture Certificate program provides students with a solid background in plant science along with specific expertise and skills needed for careers in the grape industry.  Students enrolled in the program will take courses related to plants, soils, pests, plant disease, pruning techniques, and vineyard management.
