  • Child Development Laboratories

    Description:

    The MSU Child Development Laboratories (CDL) offers programming to children eighteen months to five years of age. We offer half-day academic year preschool as well as full-day, year-round preschool. 

    The CDL takes an active role in outreach, welcoming practitioners from across the state, country, and world to visit the labs, sharing information about their work in supporting children's development in all domains, and modeling exemplary practice in support of children's social development.  Students and Early Childhood professionals benefit by the exemplary research-driven program within which university students can observe and practice developing skills; being included in a comprehensive Early Childhood educational program, which includes integration of literacy across the domains, the use of anti-bias curriculum, and advocacy for children; being supported in his or her professional development in an emotionally safe environment; and receiving written and oral feedback.  

    Students are supported in their professional development through conference presentations. Staff share their expertise through workshops, publications, and observational tours of their classrooms. Teachers can also complete their required number of hours for their Early Childhood Endorsement (ZS) at the Child Development Laboratories.

  • Connected Mathematics Leadership, Coaching, and Mentoring Workshop (June 2019)

    Description:

    The workshop will focus on developing approaches and refining plans to deepen teachers’ mathematical content and pedagogical knowledge for teaching beyond initial unit training.

  • Connected Mathematics Project: A Focus on Grade 6, 7, or 8 with CMP Workshops (June 2019)

    Description:

    Join a Grade 6, Grade 7, or Grade 8 group for an in-depth discussion on mathematics and the pedagogy in CMP3. You will experience the Standards for Mathematical Practice and discuss the correlations to the CCSS during the workshops. There will be an opportunity to discuss implementation and management strategies for CMP3 with experienced CMP teachers and authors and to share ideas with colleagues from across the country. A special CMP carnival, complete with food and prizes will be offered mid-week.

  • Connected Mathematics Project: Differentiating in Mathematics Classrooms Workshop (June 2019)

    Description:

    This workshop is designed around sharing ideas and experiences to help us learn from each other. The workshop leaders will guide you through what it’s like to teach, experience, and learn in a CMP classroom. We encourage those who work with special populations to attend in teams.

  • CREATE for STEM Institute

    Description:

    The goal of the CREATE for STEM (Collaborative Research in Educational Assessment and Teaching Environments for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Institute is to improve the teaching and learning in mathematics and science from kindergarten to higher education. It serves as a springboard and a hub for innovation, research, and intellectual collaboration, and help bring to fruition ideas and projects that will make a difference in the teaching and learning of science and mathematics for all learners regardless of their cultures or experiences.

    Description:

    The purpose of the CREATE Science Seminar series is to help create a vibrant collaborative community at MSU around research in science education K-16. We provide a venue to disseminate and discuss innovative research methods and results. These seminars also offer opportunities to foster relationships and network with experts in STEM education research. By providing this series, CREATE ultimately strives to help solve challenging problems in the teaching and learning of science.

  • Educational Technology (NP) Endorsement

    Description:

    For students in the State of Michigan who are K12 educators, the Educational Technology (NP) Endorsement can be added to either an elementary or secondary certificate. Teachers holding this endorsement are considered well-prepared to teach introductory computer-related classes for which no specific endorsement is needed. These classes include (but are not limited to) — Computers, Computer Literacy, Keyboarding, Word Processing, Computer Applications, Web Design, and Introduction to the Internet.  The NP Endorsement consists of the seven courses; they do not have to be taken in sequence and can be completed online, hybrid, or overseas.

  • Educational Technology Certificate Program (Online, Hybrid, and Overseas)

    Description:

    This graduate-level credential in technology integration prepares educators who work with students in a range of educational settings to help students become powerful digital-age thinkers, makers and problem solvers. In just one or two semesters, you will acquire foundational knowledge and skills that will transform your thinking about how, why and when to integrate a range of digital technologies to support student learning.

    We give you choices that fit your needs. You can take classes online. Our hybrid summer cohort blends face-to-face and online learning. Our overseas program offers four weeks of face-to-face learning.

    The Graduate Certificate in Educational Technology:

    • 9 credits, 3 courses – CEP 810, CEP 811, CEP 812
    • signifies that students have foundations in theories and practices of technology integration  in educational settings
    • can be completed as a stand-alone credential or as a part of the MAET degree program or other university degree programs.

    MSU’s Emerging Leaders Program provides potential school principals an opportunity to explore in detail the knowledge, skillsets and mindsets required to be a successful leader in today’s complex educational environments. This intimate, 3-day experience connects emerging educational leaders with highly successful assistant principals, principals and superintendents. Together, they explore the joys and challenges inherent in the principalship.

  • Fellowship of Instructional Leaders

    The Fellowship offers a research-based approach to school improvement, customized to the unique context of your school. The Fellowship builds capacity to lead improved instructional practice for increased student achievement. We can help you and your school leadership team improve the learning climate of your school, advance the quality of instruction in your classrooms, and set and meet meaningful school improvement goals.

    As part of the Fellowship, your school leadership team will learn how to improve instruction throughout your building by focusing on your own data in the context of MSU's framework for action. Quality instruction is at the heart of the framework, with teachers learning to use data to drive instruction and improve learning. The program is grounded in the best research around teaching and learning. With nearly a decade of experience, this program has had proven success in schools just like yours.
     

  • Master of Arts in Education (Online)

    Description:

    The 30-credit, online Master of Arts degree in Education (MAED) is designed for educators who are interested in enhancing their professional practice through online study of advanced professional knowledge related to teaching, learning, and leadership in P-12 schools and postsecondary contexts (e.g. community colleges, universities, community centers, and the workplace). Through elective sequences of learning opportunities, the student may develop one or two concentrations that focus on selected areas such as special education, technology and learning, P-12 school and postsecondary leadership, literacy education, sport coaching and leadership, and science and mathematics education. The online MA program in Education is available only online and only under Plan B (without thesis). The online format provides optimum flexibility for students who wish to engage in inquiry and learning that will contribute to exemplary educational practice.

  • Master of Arts in Teaching and Curriculum Program (Online)

    Description:

    The Master of Arts in Teaching and Curriculum (MATC) is designed for beginning and experienced teachers alike, the majority of whom are teaching full time and all of whom are deeply committed to public education and teaching P-12 students. Participation in the MATC program requires a deep, dual commitment to teachers’ learning as well as to students’ learning. Our program tailors coursework to meet our students’ individual interests while focusing on the program goals of:

    • Engaging in critical inquiry
    • Developing as accomplished teachers
    • Becoming teacher leaders

    The Online MATC Program is completed entirely online and offers flexible scheduling and access to nationally distinguished faculty.  This 30 credit program is only available under Plan B (without thesis).

  • Mind the Gap: Bridging the Researcher-Teacher Divide (April 2019)

    Description:

    This mini-conference event brings researchers and teachers together in dialogue around the questions “Do teachers care about research?” and “Do researchers care about teachers?” Plenary session presentations by researcher Dr. Masatoshi Sato (Universidad Andrés Bello, Chile) and a language educator (TBD) will be followed by a mixer in smaller break-out rooms, where language researchers and language teachers will engage in guided but informal dialogue. The event will conclude with a Town Hall-style forum, facilitated by MSU’s Second Language Studies program chair, Dr. Shawn Loewen.

  • Red Cedar Writing Project Regional Advanced Summer Institute (July 2019)

    Description:

    Renew your writer, teacher, and leader self! Join us for a four day workshop (and Friday homecoming celebration) on the banks of the Red Cedar at MSU. Share best practices, discuss pedagogical texts, and write for professional and personal purposes with other NWP Teacher Consultants. Engage in an experience like a miniature version of your original ISI experience, complete with writing and reading groups, conversations with authors, and sacred writing time.
