    Description:

    The mission of the Michigan State University Anaerobic Digestion Research and Education Center (MSU ADREC) is to provide a platform for multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional, and multi-national collaborations that develop sustainable waste-to-resource solutions to address current and future waste utilization challenges. The research and development activities in the center are focusing on developing the technologies that are able to economically address waste utilization needs of our global community. The specific objectives are to: 1) develop novel waste-to-resource technologies capable to convert organic wastes into value-added products, 2) fulfill commercialization and technology transfer of new waste-to-resource concepts, and 3) educate the next generation of engineers, scientists and policymakers on waste utilization design and practice.

  • Bettinghaus Lecture on Climate Change

    Description:

    The annual Bettinghaus Lecture, named in honor of the prolific health risk researcher and former ComArtSci Dean Professor Erwin P. Bettinghaus, brings an expert to our campus each spring to share their work on health, risk, environment, and science communication. In 2019, Dr. Emily Falk will give the presentation "Neural approaches to understanding how ideas and behaviors spread". Dr. Falk is Associate Professor of Communication, Psychology, and Marketing at the Annenberg School for Communication at the Unversity of Pennsylvania.

  • Center for Advancing Microbial Risk Assessment

    Description:

    The Center for Advancing Microbial Risk Assessment (CAMRA) provides the tools needed to combat bioterrorism and ward off global outbreaks of infectious diseases. Along with a consortium of scientists from six other universities, MSU's Joan Rose and other MSU scientists will use the center to help shape policy and create a global strategy for dealing with these microbial risks.

    Description:

    The overarching goal of CGCEO is to contribute to the understanding of the interrelations among human, land, and climate systems in an international context, as reflected in MSU’s Boldness by Design. Building on existing strength in interdisciplinary approaches to understand the social processes, land use and land cover patterns and processes, and environmental impacts and responses at regional to global scales, the Center addresses the following key science questions:

    How are social processes altering and impacting global environmental dynamics? How do these changes, in turn, respond to and affect land and human systems?

    The research activities at the Center attempt to identify, understand and model land surface processes; determine and quantify socioeconomic root causes of and responses to global change, and assess human/animal health and ecosystem services.

  • Center for Microbial Ecology Image Analysis System (CMEIAS)

    Description:

    CMEIAS consists of several custom plug-ins for UTHSCSA ImageTool, a free image analysis software operating on a personal computer in a Windows NT or higher environment. The main objective of CMEIAS is to provide computing tools designed to strengthen microscopy-based approaches for understanding microbial ecology. CMEIAS software contains many measurement features, the most unique of which is an object classifier that automatically categorizes each cell in the image into one of 11 predominant microbial morphotypes, including cocci, spirals, curved rods, U-shaped rods, regular straight rods, unbranched filaments, ellipsoids, clubs, rods with extended prostheca, rudimentary branched rods, and branched filaments. This information is useful for studies on the ecology of microbial populations and communities.

    Description:

    The mission of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability is to develop and maintain a center of excellence that integrates ecology with socioeconomics, demography, and other disciplines for ecological sustainability from local, national, to global scales. The objectives include: conducting cutting-edge research on emerging issues related to ecological sustainability; training new generations of leading scholars for interdisciplinary research; and disseminating research findings across the globe.

  • CoastWatch Reporting System Website

    Description:

    The Sea Grant CoastWatch Website provides the latest available information on Great Lakes surface water temperatures. Sea Grant CoastWatch captures National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration CoastWatch data from satellites that pass over the lakes four times daily, then presents the latest good images to viewers as isothermic maps. CoastWatch site visitors can select from five lakewide, 16 regional and 42 port maps of Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario.

    Description:

    Onsite wastewater treatment systems are an accepted permanent solution to manage wastewater from a single house to a small cluster of buildings. Proper siting, design, operation, and management is essential to meet treatment goals and keep expenses low. This training provides a comprehensive, fundamental background about onsite wastewater treatment, designed for the professional audience.  The training consists of nine modules. The training is online and self-paced, although all modules must be completed within a three-week period. A diverse educational delivery approach is used consisting of readings, narrated presentations, videos, and web sites. Successful completion of the entire class (all modules) results in the award of 1.6 MDEQ continuing education credits (CEC) and/or 16 continuing septage credits (CSC).

    Description:

    Easy-to-use online tools will be used to simplify the design process and maximize return on investment in the drainage system. These tools will help estimate the optimum drain spacing to maximize profit, and thereby avoid too narrow or too wide drain spacings. Application of these user-friendly tools is what sets this workshop aside from other drainage workshops.

  • Dunbar Forest Experiment Station (Sault Ste. Marie, MI)

    Description:

    The 5,760-acre Dunbar Forest is the largest and second-oldest MSU off-campus facility. The forest hosts long-term genetics and silvicultural studies that have helped advance the science of forest management in Michigan and the Great Lakes region. For example, red pine is the most widely planted commercial forest species in Michigan, occupying more than 850,000 acres. Successful long-term management of this important resource is based, in large part, on research results from the Dunbar Forest.

    Description:

    Michigan State University Extension is an educational leader in providing support to communities in green and sustainable economic development. Through programs like Stronger Economies Together, MSU Extension facilitates the development of an economic development plan in two regions in the state. Extension educators help counties work together in developing strong economic blueprints that strengthen relationships, build trust and capacity and strengthen "social capital."

  • Emerald Ash Borer Online Insecticide Guide

    Description:

    "Insecticide Options for Protecting Ash Trees from Emerald Ash Borer" is an online guide that provides the most up-to-date information on insecticides that can be used to combat this pest, as well as what to consider before treating ash trees. The guide includes frequently asked questions, information on insecticide products available for EAB control and how to use them, and a summary of results from studies that tested the effectiveness of the various insecticides. The guide also presents key points to consider and recommendations for dealing with EAB.

  • Enviro-weather Website for Pest, Natural Resource, and Production Management

    Description:

    The Enviro-weather website is a production management tool designed to aid agriculture and the green industry in making management decisions. The user selects a weather station location from the map to view weather data, integrated pest management models, natural resource and production models, forecasts and related links for specific commodities.

    Description:

    The Fate of the Earth symposium brings distinguished thinkers from around the world to explore what we know, what we need to know and what we must do as we move into a century of unprecedented environmental change, technological advancement and scale of human activity. The event includes research focused seminars and discussion and emphasizes events and presentations that will speak to the broader MSU and Michigan community. In addition to live events and webcasts, the symposium generates educational materials that can be used in classes and non-traditional education.

  • Forest Biomass Innovation Center (Escanaba, MI)

    Description:

    The 1,745-acre MSU Forest Biomass Innovation Center in Escanaba is leading a number of initiatives to increase the sustainable use of wood in Michigan’s expanding bioeconomy. This wood will come from the surplus growing in the forests and from willow and poplar energy plantations on marginal farm land in the northern parts of the state. Work focuses on increasing yields, decreasing costs, reducing greenhouse gas and energy losses, retaining rural jobs, and improving supply chain efficiencies. Research at the center also focuses on forest genetics, silviculture and forested wetland management.

  • Forest Carbon Science, Policy, and Management Online Graduate Certificate

    With a global focus, the Graduate Certificate in Forest Carbon Science, Policy, and Management is available completely online and supplements a wide range of vocations. The Certificate equips participants with the interdisciplinary tools and conceptual backgrounds to plan, implement, manage, and evaluate forestry-based climate change mitigation projects. As professionals, Certification provides an edge in competing for opportunities in forest carbon project development, REDD+ policy, and carbon offset investment advising for corporations, governments, and non-governmental organizations.

    Participants in the Certificate program learn the scientific foundations of climate change and forest-climate interactions, how forest management affects forest carbon balance, the ins and outs of forest carbon markets, the social context of forest carbon sequestration, and the tools for measuring, monitoring, and accounting for forest carbon - including satellite imagery, remote sensing, and integrated carbon sequestration models.
